This is a thorough and high quality video! Thank you for making this. I've definitely had issues with family tables in windchill in the past, another video that covers tips or best practices for managing family tables in windchill might be helpful. Or maybe the general practice you have mentioned here (never use the generic in any assembly) is the simple key to success.

Sean, Thanks for your comments. I will make a separate video on practices for managing Family Tables in Windchill. There are special considerations for them in a CAD data management system. Not assembling generics is one practice, but there are others. Dave

I always appreciate your tutorials. They are the most clear, complete and well done. Question: I normally create the family table of the size, and open the instance and in the new instance create another family table with the different lengths. Therefore when choosing a screw first I'm prompted for the size, and after that I'm prompted for the length. Pros and cons? Thank you
@CADPLMGuy
@CADPLMGuy 2 жыл бұрын
That's called a Nested Family Table. Although it seems logical, it becomes a nightmare for PDM / PLM systems. That reason is enough that almost no one uses them.

Question, are you able to create a table with the specific dimensions and adjust dimensions to the primary model from the family table? Also, will creo generate these instances or will it only be useful the assembly environment, in other words can we generate an independent part only file using one of the instances?
@CADPLMGuy
@CADPLMGuy Жыл бұрын
No, you cannot change the generic from the table. Watch my video on instance index files and accelerator files.

I have a query, if this screw (for which family table is created) is used in an assembly and generic screw is used, while creating BOM generic screw information will come I am clear with that. But in assembly drawing (.drw) is it possible to add all family table instances as a seperate table ? TIA
@CADPLMGuy
@CADPLMGuy 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. Add the Family Table generic as its own model to the drawing and then create a Part Catalog table as I demonstrate in another video.

Hi I tried to do as done in your video. I named the features as you've done and made a family table. I added the following relations: MAJOR_DIAMETER:FID_THREAD = SIZE D10 = LENGTH But the problem is: if I open one of the isntances the length of the thread is as long as i expect it but the shown thread diameter d9 is still wrong. What could be the problem here?

Nice Video, very helpful when coming from a Solidworks environment. I am used to a similar feature there. Is it also possible to add columns with the parameters for Part no., manufacturer, description, and UOM so it populates in my Bill of materials correctly when I drop an instance into an assembly?

Great video! What would you do, if you have a family table with more 100 components and you have to make a drawing of each component? What I’m doing is create a drawing and then save it as copy and replace the model. Do you know a faster way to do it? Thank you
3 жыл бұрын
You can replace model in a drawing. There is a "replace" command that allows you to use another model of the same family table. Then you can save the newly created drawing in a different name. If you just need to print, it is ok not to change the file name. A mapkey would make the process much quicker.

In Solidworks, there is an option called configuration Manager which helps to make the same model (containing every feature) and allows to modify the single model or allows to apply the changes to all models(all configurations). The family table in creo works like the Design table in Solidworks. Is it possible to do same things in creo that the Solidworks configuration manager does? Do you have any video or can you please make one. Thank you
@CADPLMGuy
@CADPLMGuy 3 жыл бұрын
Family Tables cover both what Configurations and Design Tables do in SolidWorks. However, if you are looking for a direct one-to-one mapping of the functionality between the two software packages, you won't find it since the CAD platforms were written by different teams.

@@CADPLMGuy I have a part with a folded body and a flat body. How do I use Family Tables to only show the flat body in a drawing but the folded body in the assembly?
@CADPLMGuy
@CADPLMGuy 3 жыл бұрын
@@MarkTaylor-mz8zp What do you mean a part with a folded body? Are you talking about a sheetmetal part? Or a flexible circuit board? I don't understand, but either way, I wouldn't use a Family Table. If it's sheetmetal, I would use Flat State functionality, preferably with a Simplified Rep. If it's not sheetmetal, I would use Flexible Component functionality. I have videos on all this and these methods are preferable to Family Tables, which are intended to capture different variations of products that you sell, not the same part in different shapes / configurations.

Hi Dave, is there a way to show where a dimension that you added to a family table is located? I.e. what sketch or feature in the model tree the dimension is in. If i click on the dimension in the family table nothing happens to show me what sketch or feature the dimension is in.
@CADPLMGuy
@CADPLMGuy 3 жыл бұрын
Use the Search tool (binoculars icon in the lower right corner) and set Look For to All Dimensions and use Rule = Name and type in the name of the dimension. This is a reason why it's always a good idea to rename dimensions before using them in a Family Table.
