An even scarier version was Minecraft Pocket Edition back around 2012/2013. If you played in Creative Mode there were absolutely no mobs, no music, no structures, no cave systems, it was just you and the very small world you spawned into. I don't remember if it was a new song or a new cave noise that was added, but i was deep in the mines and it started playing, and it was the most horrifying thing ever because I'd never heard it before so i genuinely blocked myself up in a hole and quit the game. Minecraft peaceful mode kinda captures the feeling of immortality perfectly, you live in a vast area that feels like a paradise with freedom to do anything, but you don't have other humans to interact with sure you have villagers but they are like _dummies_ they won't do much for you. This reminds me of the SCP "E for Eternity" which as the name implies, you live forever. On an island with humans who act like dummies and won't really interact with you like real humans.. Every horror game have forgot 1 thing: People are not afraid of seeing danger, *They are afraid of NOT knowing where it is* Edited: How the hell I got so many likes?! Because that raises another question: What is ALSO a hallucination?
@71tofuАй бұрын
The moment I see that monster, the moment I can tangibly put a face to what I am looking at, bam. It's a joke. Even the most horrifying thing you can conjure up in your mind is nothing compared to not knowing when or where the threat comes from. The problem is, when it's just a "oops, u didnt do wut I said, so imma just kill u, start from the beginning, lul" horror interaction, I am just instantly done. I'm not afraid anymore, I'm pissed that I have to memorize shit instead of experience the horror. The one horror game like this I played through was completed after ten hours of memorization in the brief moments I had. @@71tofu Same I agree 100%. Horror becomes at some point less scary, just annoying to get through when the difficulty is next to impossible. Memorizing puzzles. Poorly integrated controls, etc. Loud sounds I absolutely despise, because I still have rather sensitive hearing. So hearing loud noises is both a scare initially, but mostly a pain. Deafening noise doesn't equal scary. I've seen scarier by silent monsters that only have sound cues and just appear out of hiding. Love that. I actually miss having horror that's more psychological. Where a person is driven insane from hearing things that might not be there, might not be real. There is only silence, only them. No ambience, no noise. Nothing, until some sound cues happen, shrieking cave sounds that make a person lose their soul for a moment. Something subtle, but no monster. Just, the loneliness to the point someone wants anything, anything to keep them company. Imagine that. Horror, but psychological. Rather than a monster, it's the uncanny liminal feeling as described in the video, maybe some shocking audio cues and abnormal sounds Minecraft is known for under specific conditions.

Basically what you described is psychological reaction to loneliness insecurity and silence, that's the strongest technique horror movies usually exploit to trigger fear. The "fear of the unknown" is by far the most terrifying and uncomfortable. You don't know whether it's something there or what it is, so your mind starts making countless thoughts of the "thing" thats lurking. That triggers our ancient survival instincts where you're being hunted by an animal that's hidden. You don't know where it'll come from, what is it, or how to deal with it.

I would love to see a mod that "removes" all NPC type characters and enemies, and leaves subtle hints as to where they went. No Villagers or Witches or Illagers or Pillagers. No Piglins, zombified or otherwise. No enderman. No ender dragon. Shifting the end goal of the game from defeating the dragon to piecing together what happened to the people of Minecraft. Was it the same kind of event that erased the great builders? Was it something new? At night, monsters still spawn. But no zombies or skeletons. No, only creepers and spiders. All the villages and bastions are desolate and empty. Paired with some atmospheric mods like those used in Minecraft: PS1 edition, etc. It could be very intriguing.

There is actually a ten year old Doctor Who episode that plays with this concept. It's an episode called "Listen" and the opening of the episode describes it perfectly. I recommend you atleast watch the opening to the episode, it should be available on KZbin. The Doctor is alone in the Tardis, no one with him, and he asks the question "Why do we talk to ourselves, when we know that there's no one there?". He then goes on about how evolution perfects certain qualities. Some species have perfected hunting, some have perfected defence. But why is there no species that has perfected hiding? The answer is, if a creature had perfected the ability to hide itself, how would you know that it exists? You wouldn't be able to see it, hear it, or even sense it's presence. Apart from those brief moments where you talk to yourself aloud. What if that's your mind knowing something is there, when you can't sense it at all. Ever had those moments, where you put something down, you walk away, and then you walk back, and the thing you just put down is now gone? You could eventually find it, but it wasn't in the place you left it. There's no one else in the house with you, so who was the one who moved it? This idea of not knowing if something is there or not, could explain every single irrational fear. Why are we afraid of the dark? Because we know someone could be hiding in the dark. Why are we afraid of the ocean depths? Because we don't know what lurks down there? Why are we afraid of the monster under our bed? Because we can't see what's under our bed, until we look under it. So how do we know there's not something hiding under there, when we're not looking? Perhaps they're not irrational fears after all. Maybe our fear of them is completely justified.

The ambience in the Basalt Delta is truly horrifying while in peaceful mode. You hear a constant, soft, and isolating drone that's occasionally interrupted by the crumbling of the Nether, the clicking of geiger counters, and the echoing screams of unknown beasts that are never seen but always heard. Not even in regular Minecraft is their an explanation to those noises, but in peaceful mode, there shouldn't be any noises. At least not from mobs. Turning the render distance all the way down with fog on really adds to the scene.
@ЯковБахтинАй бұрын
I don't find that many mobs in basalt deltas even on normal difficulty - probably because its terrain is so irregular... So im getting what you're meaning
@imat-rexАй бұрын
Yeah, even if I know that I should be safe, the basalt deltas ambiance still manage to put me on edge. One time, I was playing on a multi-player world (I was the only one on tho), and I was trying to create a path from my bases Neather portal to the Neather portal connected to the world spawn. My portals spawn was in a cave area, so I decided to just tunnel in a straight line twords the spawn portal coordinates for as long as I could. I wound up tunneling under/through a very large chunk of basalt deltas. Even though I was in an enclosed space and placing torches to prevent hostile mob spawns, I was constantly checking behind myself. Even though nothing would be there, it still felt like maybe something WAS there just past the fog. The geiger counter freaked me out every time I heard it. I think playing fallout as a kid conditioned me to treat that noise as an active threat lol.

I started playing in 2020 on 1.16. i knew nothing about the game and asked my son about what to do. Now years later, after watching videos and hearing others stories I can attest to this very same feeling. The creepiest is the whispers when you've been in the caves a long time. I was mining deep down when I heard them for the first time. I thought someone was actually standing behind me in the room and looked to see. As I kept playing I heard it many more times. I chalked it up to cave noises but have since found out it's not one of the regular noises. One time I was walking around in the dark in a plains biome (in peaceful mode) and heard those same whispers. I looked around and ... nothing. Recently I was telling my son about them and he said he had never heard about anything like that, then it happened and I let him hear it. He doesn't play Minecraft anymore. I still do, but with a strong sense of foreboding as everywhere I go in the world, I hear them, and when I turn around they stop...

Hot take: I LOVE the loneliness of Minecraft. I wouldn’t even venture to call it a lonely game, I would call it a peaceful, quiet game. I’ve come to realize recently that I really don’t like multiplayer games unless I have friends to play it with and we’re the only people in the server. I’m just very introverted and ngl sometimes people do things that get on my nerves. Minecraft being an entire world all my own, where I just don’t have to worry about other people messing up my experience is freeing.

I'm actually working on a video about a very weird bug involving ghost mobs that happened back in beta minecraft that I still can't explain to this day (and no one I asked has had a proper explanation for either). Funnily enough, the "house I did not build" video is also what brought back that memory to me, due to the weird red dot that shows up in the video that turned out to just be a rendering bug from that specific version (in case you're curious, it's at 12:50 on the og video, while the chest inventory is open, behind the open door to the right). It just made me realize old minecraft had plenty of downright terrifying moments that were for the most just bizarre bugs many people did not realize were just glitches in the system, and many nowdays we consider just urban legends. This stupid ghost I was reminded of that's been literally haunting me for the past month was one of those glitches that I almost gaslit myself into thinking wasn't real till some friend found old proof I recorded that I forgot of. Really crazy to think how the mere development process and aesthetic of a mildly surreal indie game cultivated one of the most subtly horrifying games ever made by sheer accident.

I think the main reason why singleplayer is so terrifying is mostly because of how empty Minecraft actually is. if you've ever played subnautica you know how terrifying large empty spaces where the only thing you can hear is your own movement are, minecraft has a similar effect not because the world is actually baren and empty but (in my opinion) because there's so little detail, you can't see any intricacies in the caves, you don't see the beauty of a dense forest, there's this kind of hard edge to it. the game makes itself look almost crude and hostile having little beauty or fineness just large dark areas where anything could be watching you.

The worlds had been huge since Infdev, but the mobs roaming about were fewer and sparse, and the only humanoids were the player and undead (or so you were led to believe). The pitch-dark nights and the distance fog added more to the creepiness. That's prolly why myths like Herobrine worked so well.

I wasn’t to much of a hero brine follower, but on a super flat world in creative my brother and I were building a castle around a village, when we heard an Enderdragon roar. I’ve always thought it was a game file error, but between the atmosphere of a single player world and glitches like that, Minecraft gets really creepy.
@DankePrimeАй бұрын
I used to play exclusively creative mode because survival just terrified me so much due to the overwhelming feeling I was being watched. I started playing survival more because I realized a superflat world with mob spawns turned off (which I *normally* played) was infinitly scarier

this is a very interesting perspective because ive literally not once not ever felt anything close to dread playing singleplayer or peaceful mode in mc in fact playing peaceful mode makes me happy because i dont have to fear mobs so its really interesting to hear that apparently some people have this experience huh

3:30 This view alone made me hide under my blanket immediately. I honestly can't stand mining in peaceful mode with sound on. This one time a cave sound played, and I just ran, losing my perfect mining spot. I felt so dumb, because there was nothing that could harm me, right? But my heart was pumping and I felt so vulnerable, after that I never came back to that world.
@Majin325Ай бұрын
This reminds me of that time when I did the usual herobrine totem, back then I was a kid and I truly believed he was real. I ran sobbing to my mom to tell her I wanted to play but I was extremely scared of that world... I feel the same as you but nowadays its just a funny story to tell :3

@@kaiax91It's just psychological horror, there could either be a threat or not but you're prepared in case there is (thats why we usually fear dark, not because its scary but because it can hide dangerous stuff). Sometimes horror movies and games don't have any jumpscares but its that feeling of not knowing what could haunt you what really makes you feel uncomfortable, not being used to your surroundings is one of the most used resources and minecraft does it pretty well as every seed is unique. Hope that helps a bit ^^ I'm a huge horror fan

What really doesn't help is when you DO see something. Something small, in reality, likely just a tiny rendering bug, or something completely mundane. But also, something you otherwise would have missed, too distracted by fighting the monsters right in front of you, to notice it, and now, without distraction, your mind simply jumps at, wondering what that was, curious, or... terrified, of the answer. For example, watching this very video, at 5:49, for a brief moment, when passing by what looks like an iron door, there's a bright, white pixel, or... maybe two, on the other side of it's window. It's probably just the moonlight... I'd suggest a torch or something, but there's no actual light lighting up the area... ...but what if it's not? What if something is watching you in that moment. Two pale, white, almost glowing eyes, staring at you from beyond a door you passed by, barely even noticed... yet clearly there.

@chaoticsilver8442Ай бұрын
@@maazghanchi8994 Probably, but again, that's beside the point. The corner of the moon, or a star, or whatever it may be, it doesn't really matter. My point is, while he mostly speaks of you feeling things that aren't there- When there actually is something there, small, and, likely mundane. At most, just being a simple lighting glitch or rendering bug. And yet, one's mind can so easily just... jump onto it, it happens so briefly, and would never have been noticed had there been a dozen pillagers occupying the mansion, and our attention. ...but when it's the only thing there to possibly grab your attention? When you're left to wonder if that white pixel you saw, was a star... or an eye, watching? When you're left to wonder if whatever that movement was that you saw in the corner of your eye while walking through a forest at night was just a leaf decaying... or something stalking about in the woods? When you're left to wonder if that strange, tall, thing you saw briefly in the distance while you were walking by, was just a tree... Or something standing there, waiting? ...Well, that's at least what my own mind jumps onto. Things that I'm not even sure I've actually seen, or... had seen properly. Things that are completely normal, and yet... feel as if they shouldn't be there.

If you’re playing peaceful mode, here’s what you can do to ease your tension. Play music: playing music you like can make you feel more comfortable and relaxed, you’re playing peaceful after all. Turn off multiplayer on that world: reason why I say this is because that there was this one time I was playing Minecraft by myself. And all the sudden it said someone had joined, but I didn’t have any friends on the console or Minecraft party. I was so confused. But, just turn off multiplayer just in extra case. Don’t let your mind wander around with imagination: if you’re just walking around and doing stuff, don’t think of anything that might make you think something’s lurking. Not even this comment.

Something I used to do in any mode. When I would build a house/home I wouldn't add ANY windows. And when I didn't need it, I would replace the door with blocks. The idea that someone/something out there could see me gave me chills. I also didn't like building huge houses. What if someone got in? I wouldn't know cause the house is too big. A windowless home was the only time I felt truly safe in this game.

When playing any other mode, you are a hero, fighting monsters and shaping the world. But Peaceful Mode is like facing a world already at peace. A world already in a time it should be. But you're there. And you are not as justified as you once were. As if your actions have consequences. As if you are the reason this world is bare. *As if you are the evil and must be punished.* I have a feeling if Minecraft ever added something like where mobs disappear permanently after death, we would not only feel this horror and dread like this, but would know exactly why. Because we're the villain of Peaceful Mode. *You are the horror, and must face your consequences.*

I STG if Mojang just put in like, birds that were active during the day and that went quiet during the night it would fix so many problems - Pigeons and crows in forest biomes, hawks in desert biomes, arctic turns in ice biomes, seagulls near oceans etc... But that means adding more than one new creature a year that isn't arbitrarily put in a rigged vote, so that ain't happening 🤷
@rowanparmelee3618Ай бұрын
Great video, Cresendex! At 11:50 you make a very interesting point. In psychology, there's a concept known as the Agent Detection System, which is our inclination to look for causes to the things we observe. If a branch snaps in the forest, there must be a reason for it, and as we evolved from animals that were originally prey, our brains are wired to react with fear; the thing that snapped that twig could be a hungry lion after all. But when there is no observable reason for something, our brain gets extra nervous. The system goes into overdrive, and becomes hyperactive, leading to anxiety and paranoia, because there just has to be a cause! In a species as intelligent as human beings, we tend to create our own explanations, leading to a whole host of theoretical threats and things that go bump in the night. Some scientists have even theorized that the hyperactive state of the ADS may be responsible for humankind's development of religion, as our early ancestors didn't see causes to much of what they observed, so they came up their own theories. The same principle is in action in Peaceful Mode. When we know we should be alone our brain lacks something to focus on, so they latch onto any thread of fear they can find. They weave that thread into a tapestry of mental gymnastics to try and convince us that there's something hiding just out of sight that we should be afraid of. And that's the scariest thing of all; in those moments Herobrine is as real as anything else that could harm us, because the only thing we truly have to fear, is fear itself. And that never leaves us.

The creepiest and eeriest part to me has always been how you are the only person in a massive world, with ransacked villages, frantic villagers, still water that hasn't been touched by anyone, only hearing the animals, your footsteps as you sprint jump across blocks, and background music, and the feeling that you are being watched. Why do we feel like we are being watched? I've felt it, I still feel it. I think we feel we are being watched due to... well, how alone it feels. It's almost as if all of the people were wiped out and you are the only survivor along with the animals, yet you don't feel alone all the time, because there's a possibility that someone could be out there. Heck, it could even just be our imagination for all we know, or how late it is when you are playing, but still. I just thought I'd share how I feel and think of it. Thank you to anyone who took the time to read this, hehe

Imagine, if you will, moving to a world, devoid of any sentient beings. There is no danger, Or rather there shouldn't be. There are forest, there are cities, There are nests, there are farms, There are hives, there are buildings, Yet no beast nor man in sight. There are marks of civilizations, There are marks of hunts, There are marks of communities, There are marks of life. Every day the sun shines, Every night the stars glow. The weather is mild, Sometimes there are storms, Sometimes there is snow, Sometimes it is hot, But you can live with it. There is plenty of food and water, You have electric energy, You even have wifi. There are videos, There is literature, There are games, But no signs where the creators might be. The stories of old, They just stopped, The people who lived here, They are just are gone. There are no signs of why, No murderous monsters, No vengeful gods, No bloodlusted demons, No failed experiment, No unstoppable catastrophy, No avoidable tragedy, No alien invasion, No AI revolution, Just emptiness, Just stillness. The only thing that is there, Is this quiet world and you.
