As a boat owner I’m crying. 3k would of bought this boat back to life and it would of been worth 6.5k - 8k
@roddickgreg

Eh? Boats of that age (1970s) were over-built and that one looks structurally sound. The plywood bulkheads are structural and can rot, but there's no evidence of that. Replacing standing rigging on a boat of that size will cost 1600 tops (that's getting someone to come along and do everything, without you lifting a finger). Osmosis can be a problem (the gelcoat separating from the fiberglass) but unless its excessively bad, it's cosmetic and not a structural, and, again, there's no evidence of it. The wiring will all be pont to pont, no electronics and very simple, so hardly an issue. The sails will be the big expense here, plus the fact that there will be many boats available in the area for a similar price (within rouunding error of 0), so even non-fussy buyers can be picky. The winches could sell 2nd hand for about 150, the diesel tank 50. The engine is worthless, the keel is probably worth about 150 as scrap, the mast and boom the same; brely enough to cover the cost of the disposal of the grp. Moorings are very expensive in the solent area, so whoever owns them probably just wanted the boat gone to be able to re-rent.
@roddickgreg
@roddickgreg 5 жыл бұрын
I'd be very surprised if it wasnt all grp, given its age. In the 1960s-70s British boat builders went crazy with the stuff as an overreaction to the maintainece requirements of their wooden predecessors. It wasn't til the 80s-90s that they started reducing weight/material used. The actual area of deck is really quite small if you subtract lockers and coach roof from it. The big expense with this one will be sails, closely followed by mooring/marina fees in the solent and then nickel/dime expenses to make it generally presentable. Edit: It's a Trident 24 with a fin keel which means it's all grp. www.yachtsnet.co.uk/archives/trident-24/trident-24.htm

yeah, it's just a financial decision, easier for them to get their money back stripping it than restoring it and sitting on it waiting for it to sell.

He would never have sold it to you. For any price. He would rather put more effort into his way that risk ( his pride) that someone could do more with less & make something positive & better than he. I have asked (other local to me) Breakers & Wreckers for any sailboats over 19' & less than 65'. NB. One "guy" had a bare 55' Fiberglass hull project that was never started. He'd rather cut it up than sell it.

Gee, let's see... Boat floating, check. No water inside, check. Motor will prolly run great with a fuel/fluids change check. Hmm, even the wooden rudder stick looked great! Lol. Sure the door slats need love, needs trim work, sanded and painted and prolly new wire rigging. I'd buy it on the spot! Sad to see it destroyed :(. ...sad that the parts make enough money to make it more worth their time than fixing.

A power washer on that would have sorted that growth. For something that had been left floating in the water you would expect growth.

He’s trying to justify himself in breaking up the boat. By saying, this need done, that needs done. Cost doesn’t really come into it if you love a small project. Just look at timber boats, a fortune is normally spent on them and sometimes it takes years to finish. And you don’t always get your money back.

The guy talked utter bollocks! That boat would have generated considerable interest from people that are capable and prepared to invest the time, work and materials expenses to restore her back to full sailing condition! Beneath the growth and grime was a very sound hull, decent interior and an engine, and a whole hell of a lot more, besides! It pains me to see this lovely boat destroyed by someone whom professes to be knowledgeable, but is in fact completely ignorant of the boat and what it would take to restore her to sailing condition, and that there are many people that would have been ready and willing to take her on, and pay him for her.

I own a sailboat and that is so far from true lol try a year its a shame they scrapped her but you could blow $10k on that boat just to get it safe to sail antifouling $600 anodes $100 new rigging $1500 new sails $3500 rope assorted $700 anchor's x2 $300 anchor chain $800 paint $ varnish $600 new prop $400 stanchion wire and fittings $800 fiberg lass resin $120 fiberglass mat $100 plywood $500 I hit $10K and im just getting started what if the engine needs a rebuild or toilet or the wiring needs replacing I could go on but you get the point at the end of the day you could buy a boat like that ready to sail for $8-15K

Liftout: 120 Pressure wash: 60 (to buy the pressure washer) Scraping off old antifoul: 0 Sanding down to gelcoat and sanding the wood: 50 (to buy a sander and discs) Enough epoxy filler and spreaders to repair scabby gelcoat: 100 Enough paint and varnish to get it presentable: 300 110 ah battery: 70 New wood: 100 Varnish: 30 New sails: 3000 New ropes: 150 New standing rigging: 500 (optional) Yard fees for hard standing in that area: 250pcm Paint brushes, dust masks, turpentine, gloves etc: 200 Your time to do this: ? If you do this yourself you could have a perfectly respectable boat in a few months. It's only 24'-26', not a superyacht, so quite doable. The engine on that is a joke and almost certainly wont need a rebuild. There'll be nothing wrong with the fiberglass and the wiring will be super simple point-to-point soldering iron stuff. The anchor is manky but perfectly serviceable. Once you start paying other people to do these jobs the costs skyrocket.

@@razzorbladz Your prices are way out if wack as is your knowledge. You have committed to your ignorance by not knowing. You don't try to make an old boat new again. Most of what you listed can be had from Craigslist or a used boat parts shop (eg Sailorman) for half to one quarter of your new prices. $500 for plywood. Yeah your an idiot. The rigging you can do yourself with Dynema. The only things you need to or should buy new is 2 lifejackets.

The problem is boats take a lot of time money and energy to fix up,,,,and then there is the yard fees …boats get to a gage where they are uneconomical to repair to anyone wanting to make or retrieve there money back,yes that boat could of been fixed up ,,,,but is it good money after bad ,,,I’ve bought 4 boats for a 1£ each it can be done ,but I don’t think I’d do it again,,,I bought a camper and Nicholson 303 Last year In Southern Spain ,that had been abandoned for 14 years ,fortunately being in Spain and out of the water she’s in pretty good condition but has still cost me a lot of money to get sailin* again,luckily having built boats profesionally on the Isle of Wight I have got the knowledge and skills to do it ,boat cost me 2500£ had a 45000 euro harbour debt on it ,,,,,cheaper for the boatyard to sell it than scrap it or fix it
