Honestly $3100 seems extremely reasonable of course you did a lot of the labor with removing and reinstalling but I would have expected much larger. Heck a winterization in my area can be well over $600 when your all said in done in my area and that for a single engine. That was a super smart move!

I don't work on these engines but I buy a lot of parts and between parts and labor that seems like they did him right.

considering a service on my Diesel Jeep Grand Cherokee costs 1200 dollars, $3100 bucks is cheap, and as to why you don't get SS tools, SS is not as strong as carbon steel which can handle high stress levels without deformation. To protect it against corrosion hit with wd40 and store it in a toolbox, just wipe it before use and spray it again afterwards.

A little tip for moving heavy items alone. There IS always room for a tagline. ALWAYS. Some people will tell you its for safety. But its really for the safety of your property. You dont want that engine to catch a strong wind, and take out the cabin. Great videos.

I have a forklift at work that has the same engine, but naturally aspirated. It's a biggun. 25k lift capacity, heated cab, 3 speed. You could fit a full size pickup truck seat in the cab comfortably. It runs like a dream. Fires up super easy. Turn the key and before it turns over 2 full rotations, it's barked right off. Glad to see it back together man.

Love your channel, what got me interested is the CAT engine. I have worked for the company that makes the heat exchanger that is on your engine for over 26 years. Seeing it in use is really cool. Knowing that i may have machined it makes me smile. Keep it up and stay safe.

From experience I know that is a great price and a very thorough job! Love Crisfields and surrounding waters. They make stainless but the hardness and edge is not the same. Give the tools a light spray of Kroil when you put them in the box. You should have replaced the old hoses you attached to the engine. Now one of them fails and burns out the engine or sinks the boat!

Nothing better than a fine thread bolt in a spot that allows just 1/4 turn at a time with a wrench.

Those guys did an absolute jam up job! the only thing I would recommend is putting a little bit of chafe guard on your oil supply line going to the filter head. It looks to be touching on that raw water pipe and any vibration will wear through that hose and no time!!!best to luck to you!

I spent the first 40 some years of my life in the tractor business. You always put antisieze on all water hoses. Slips back off 20 years later. Helps seal too.

I strongly recommend the book “profit first”. With us being seasonal - it’s hard to eat some expenses. It shows perspective on setting amounts aside to take this into account. If you’re not able to set those amounts aside - something within the business is broken. Pricing, labor/efficiency, too much overhead etc. structure is everything within a business. I came for a family with little to no money - and running a business is all money and numbers. Very useful to have peace of mind when shit hits the fan and you have unexpected expenses that is hard to account for

I do recommend putting an extra hose clamp on all of your coolant/water lines they tend to vibrate loose.. and It is a standard here on the west coast! I just bought my boat in Canada and had idk how many leaky hoses, put another clamp for assurance and have had no problems since! I run a Detroit 6v-92 but have buddies with 3208’s! Sweet engines. Keep up the good work!

I've worked for a Cat marine engine dealer for 27 plus years, used to work on lots of 3208's. They quit production about 2002 or so- a Cat marine factory rep told me they wanted to get a factory reman program for the 3208 like Cummins has for the B and C series- but they needed to come up with 200 good cores first. The tooling to manufacture the blocks was destroyed when they stopped production. That bill you paid was NOTHING man! Oh so many marine engine turbos "rot" salt air wafting up that exhuast pipe erodes the housing, boost falls off. Usually low hour pleasure boats.

I confirm the rotting, my turbo blades are covered with rust.

When you pull the exhaust elbow/riser off, there should be about .030" between the turbine blade tips and the cast iron housing- when they are rotted you will have about a quarter inch! They won't build much if any boost. @@tujuprojects

My son born in Las Vegas 41 years ago, moved to Crisfield when he was 25. In fact, his house is only about 2 miles from Evans' Boat Builders where you were. But, you left out one thing... Wise beyond your years. As a fellow boat owner. I agree with. 1 servicing the engine before you have a problem. 2 dropping the tools you need in the bilge and extra hardware. It will be there well preserved for when you need it later😝😝. All joking aside. Having the engine gone over in the down season saved you tones of money. Just replacing the hoses alone saved you a major problem it the not too distant future. I have had an oil line fail in a spot that I was not able to confirm till I had to pull the engine for a different failure. That adventure happened on our way to Chrisfield. Thankfully we have tow insurance. Keep up the great work. I do enjoy your content and style keep up the great work. Yeah you have to be crazy to own a boat.

Stainless tools are a thing. They are just expensive. I always stocked up on harbor freight tools and considered them as "consumables". Way cheaper, and it doesn't hurt so much when you inevitably lose them.😂 Keep up the content. It's great!

Luke store your tools in a heavily oiled rag , just line the space where they are kept in a oiled rag that is large enough to fold over them , it’s much quicker than trying to get rusty tools moving again

I am a machinist millwright and I work as a shift worker and most of the time during a break down , I can have the plant running because I don’t have the day shift foreman nagging at you . When you get a tight to get to bolt, get an old sanding belt, cut a strip, put it over the bolt and a drill and done, you only have the last few threads to tighten 🤯

My Grandfather that built Deadrise boats and Skiffs in his yard in Urbanna, Va. would keep his metal tools in what he called a "Wet box". It was a toolbox that stayed on the boat or outside that everything in the box stays coated with 3in1 oil or WD40 and a full spray can of that and ether stays in the box so you can spray the tools down every time you finish using them.

As much as things cost today, $3000 was a deal. You shouldn't have any trouble with that for a long time. Nothing better than those old diesel engines. As long as you do your regular maintenance. Definitely a good investment. You will save more than that by doing what you did. I can't wait to see you out crabbing again.

It is not common to make stainless tools because it is extremely difficult to harden stainless steel and the effect is limited. Carbon steel is cheaper, can be hardened and tempered. Adding chrome and molybdenum adds strength for tool steels and carbide can be added to cutting edges.

Get yourself a cpl leather pouches like carpenter belt or ism tool pouches have to be leather and spray and wipe your tools everytime you use them spray the bag with wd 40 or lube it up with 10w30 and that's your tool kit they won't be rusty and they'll last forever. Start with good tools too that helps.

There is an ocean of room on this boat. I worked on US Navy subs; we wished we had this much room. $3100.00 was a very good price for what you got. Tools in the bilge, the bilge of a sub, is the most regretful place you'll ever have to feel for a tool. Yes, you have to find what you dropped; Subsafe demands it. Good Job....

Only time Martime Cats don't leak oil is when they are not running lol. That a good sounding motor, you should put some heatshield up around you stack so if line or something gets on it dont melt or catch fire. I fished in Alaska on big 109-183ft crab boats worked on both CATS and DEERES, certified cat parts and work for warranty is crazy, everytime we went into ship yard the bill was always 1m+

That engine looks great. The secret to get the most effort out of the engine for the long time is...... Change the oil, oil filters, fuel filters when Cat tells you, don't "save money" by letting it go. The biggest secret...... change the fuel filters and install a water separator more often than recommended.
