Crewing & Pacing the 2022 Hardrock 100

In July of 2022, we drove to Silverton, Colorado to join our friends at the Hardrock 100, a 102 mile race with over 33,000 of elevation gain in a remote region of the San Juan Mountains.
Our friends Dana and Ken from Vancouver were running the race, and with our friends Jackie and Jeff, we'd be supporting them both and helping to crew Ken and to take turns pacing him through the final half of the race.

So many inspiring people: Your friend's ability to see the beauty and donut through this tough race, those amazing front-runners running down the gully, the pacers, the crews, the dogs, the cheerleaders, the kid which knows presence matters more than word or 47:50 and 47:57 finishers as Jornet watches. Though, it's hard to beat the cool of Audrée casually pumping up camping equipment at altitude with a smile while reaching for a drink...Except for being the filmographer capturing it

The hike up to Grant Swamp is so different with the burn scar early on. So many spectators at the pass. Not so long ago few to none made the hike up. The climb up the side they descended is an experience as well as the climb up Oscar’s in the distance. Actually the entire course is an amazing journey as anyone fortunate enough to have made it knows so gratefully well. 09’ Hardrocker.

This was a fun little doc and I’m glad KZbin put it in my feed. One of the best parts was trying to see how many times I cameoed somewhere in the background: 4 times, twice prominently. I think we met out there and chatted for a minute or two. I was the guy out there shooting on slide film. Think I got a few frames of your friends. Will have to send them over to you and you can pass them on to them.

That metal plaque at the top of Grant Swamp pass, I was caught up there, just a few weeks before when you were there, in gale force winds. I had to lay down just below that plaque holding on to that rock for dear life for 20 minutes until the winds died down enough I could escape off the mountain. Good times. I can't believe I didn't find out about that last section you paced into silverton... what a world class piece of a scenery.

Hey Jeff, what a fantastic series again. I've never wanted to do a multi-stage race, but I can definitely see the attraction after watching this and your Namibia series. Although I thought your Namibia documentaries were awesome, I have more of a connection with this series. I was very lucky to be invited out to Georgia to speak at a wildlife festival about 10 years ago. I stayed with a local family in a village in the hills above Batumi (organised by Batumi Raptor Count/Birdlife Georgia) during the height of the Honey Buzzard migration. I also visited Tiblisii and camped in the High Caucasus, we hiked up from near Kasbegi. So it was fantastic to see some of the areas I had been to, featured in your films. I think due to serious mental health issues, my travelling days are most likely over. So I am content running my local trails and fells here in the Lake District (UK) and entering an ultra or two 😁. I look forward to continuing to travel vicariously through your top level videos. Thank you for what you do, it does help me and inspire me a lot. Keep up the fantastic work 👍

We love this area in Colorado (we are from New Mexico). Ophir Pass is where we got engaged, and then we got married in Silverton! We have done the Imogene Pass run for 2 years now and it's been hard but super fun-definitely recommend! We had some friends volunteer/run in the Hard Rock as well. So glad you had a great time!

It's very difficult to get in to Hardrock. First you need to run one of just a few qualifying races, and then you can enter a lottery which is very difficult to win.

Beautiful footage, what did you shoot most of this on? And what was the grip you used?

Thanks! Most of the aid station scenes were filmed on a Sony a6600. The grip is from SmallRig, along with their camera cage. All of the running footage was filmed on a GoPro Hero 10.

Pacing is so overrated. You wanna finish a hundred, do it without pacers and without help at aid stations, run solo and deal with all the problems yourself. That's what running a hundred is all about. Then you can truly say "I finished 100 miles". I, myself, have 26 consecutive 100 mile races finished under my belt including UTMB, not one DNF, and never used a pacer. Never will. What's the point of saying "I finished" when in reality, you couldn't have done it without all the people that supported you along the way? Not a great achievement at all, if you ask me.

There’s definitely an argument to be made for an against the use of pacers. I’ve had them for a couple of my 100’s, but never for a 200. But to say that running UTMB without a pacer is running it “alone” is a bit of an overstatement - that’s the most crowded event I’ve ever done 😉 I’m curious if your 100’s have all been in Europe, or were some of those in North America? And you don’t take aid from the volunteers at Aid stations at all, you run completely self-supported?

@@JeffPelletier I've ran all of my races in North America and Canada, with the exception of UTMB. No help was given to me except when at aid station, grabbing food from the table or refilling my own water bottle, obviously, but I did not have a crew waiting on stand by at every stop ready to hand me whatever I needed or change my socks for that matter. I have finished some of the hardest races out there, like Fat Dog 120 and Ouray 100, which, btw, is much harder that HR100 and has an xtra 2k of elevation gain and loss. For me, a solo finish means just that, finishing a race myself, no crew no pacers. Victory is so much sweeter that way and it should be since YOU are the one who deserves all the credit for finishing the race. If you got as far as signing up for a hundred, might as well keep your crew and your pacers away from it and see if you really are as good as you claim to be. That's the way I see it, please feel free to disagree with me.

@@JeffPelletier true, UTMB was crowded and you always had a few guys beside you or running by at all times. You cannot avoid that. I personally prefer smaller races where you don't see anyone for hours at the time. I also prefer mountain races and point to point, where the scenery changes and terrain is never the same. Might give TOR a shot again in 2023, all of my previous attempts of getting in were unsuccessful unfortunately
