This was an American crocodile (C. acutus), native to south Florida. Unlike alligators, they can tolerate salt water (at least for some time). Although they grow to 15 feet-plus, this species is known for being considerably less aggressive than other large species. An American treasure, to be sure. This 6-footer was no real danger to the humans on the beach, although one can understand why the wildlife officers removed it. Sooner or later, some jerk would try to mess with it and would get bitten.

These Florida Crocodiles are more aggressive than alligators. Here are some facts from The Florida Everglades holiday park website. BEHAVIOR Crocodiles are often regarded as much more aggressive than alligators. While you should avoid contact with both animals at all costs, alligators in the Everglades tend to be more docile than crocodiles, only attacking if hungry or provoked. Crocodiles are known to attack just because someone or something is near them; crocodiles tend to be more active in the water. Alligators in the Everglades prefer to lounge or sunbathe on the banks or in mud close to the water, which is why they can easily be spotted while driving on alligator alley or while enjoying an Everglades airboat tours.

@litigator80984 жыл бұрын
@@321gates Sorry you felt it necessary to engage in name-calling and vitriol. I'm not a tree-hugger at all, but I am a herpetologist. True, there have been occasional reported attacks in Mexico and Central America, but these are very rare and often the species of crocodilian involved (or whether there really was an "attack" at all) cannot be verified. There are very few American Crocodiles in Cuba and, as far as I can tell, NO reported attacks by one there - - as opposed to the Cuban Crocodile, which is far more aggressive. Much the same is true of South America, where American Crocodiles are found only on the northeastern coastal strip; the interior is populated exclusively by other crocodilian species. If you consult authoritative sources like the IUCN Crocodilian Specialist Group, the Florida Wildlife Commission, etc., you will see that they say exactly what I said - - American Crocodiles are typically shy and rarely attack humans. Last time I checked, there had never been a verified report of an attack by one in Florida, where the population density (and hence, the opportunities for human-crocodile interaction) is much greater than elsewhere. That doesn't mean, of course, that humans should go swimming with large American Crocodiles. Invading any large predator's natural environment is just plain stupid and invites trouble. Please take a more thoughtful approach next time.

@@litigator8098 "but these are very rare and often the species of crocodilian involved (or whether there really was an "attack" at all) cannot be verified." I'm sure most of the attacks were made up. First was on a couple in the Keys, the second on a couple in the Miami area. "where the population density (and hence, the opportunities for human-crocodile interaction) is much greater than elsewhere." I think it's more due to the current Croc population and the fact that most of Florida's crocs reside in remote areas. I do believe this will be changing though as the croc population continues to grow and push further north. "Please take a more thoughtful approach next time.' I replied to the "if any" comment you made. I have seen this phrase thrown around too many times by the animal activist types in hopes of painting a more rosy picture of the species they are trying to help. In this case, It is misleading and dangerous.
@litigator80984 жыл бұрын
@@321gates Much better - thank you. The "if any" comment was made because, as multiple sources have pointed out, in most cases American Crocodiles pose no threat to humans. As I've also noted, however, that doesn't mean humans should do stupid things that are likely to provoke an aggressive response from the animal. (That, of course, holds true of many other wild animals as well.) I also checked into the two "attacks" in Florida that you mentioned. The Miami incident involved two people who went swimming late at night in 2014, when crocodiles normally feed. Officials (apparently FWC) declined to characterize the incident as an attack "because the crocodile, a generally timid species that shies away from contact with humans, was in its own habitat and behaving as it usually would." They concluded that the crocodile simply had mistakenly interpreted what was splashing around in the water as food and blamed the swimmers for lacking common sense. In my Internet search, I could find no report of the other "attack" you mention, the one in Key West. On the other hand, I did see that as recently as June 2020, the Miami Herald reported that "American crocodiles are typically docile and afraid of people. There have been no reported cases of an attack on people by an American croc." That report, if accurate, would tend to suggest that there was no verified crocodile attack in Key West. If you have a citation or link to one or more reports of the alleged Key West incident, I'd appreciate your providing it. Thank you.

That looks like a salty I had no clue they had those in Florida. Makes sense but they’re normally from the Asian-Pacific area. I thought Florida just had alligators, American crocs and a small population of Nile in the Everglades
@FAKELIEN4 жыл бұрын
That's an american crocodile, they can get pretty big up into the 18 feet range. you can find many in turkey point, right down the coast.
@liama41993 жыл бұрын
American crocs and saltwater crocs look similar with their lighter skin to blend in with the lighter/salty waters. The American alligator is dark to blend in with the dark/swamp waters. Also, can't forget about the Cuban crocs, crocodile hybrids, and the spectacled caimans among the many other exotic species introduced to the state by humans.

@@disnutz6815 I live in Ochopee, Everglades. Born & Raised in the middle of the Motherland. I work with the Conservationists. Crocodiles are located by Southern Florida, more into the south of the Everglades by the islands. As Gators are the Owner and Neighbors in our land. You can’t tell me that Crocodilians are taking over. Seeing a Croc that far is really rare. Believe me, when I tell you this. They’re not taking over Florida.

Although sharks have a more terrifying reputation as a man eater thanks to the movie jaws in 1975, the fact is, alligators and crocodiles are far more likely to attack and eat you than any shark. Shark are very picky eaters and humans are not on their menu, by contrast, everything including humans are on a alligators and crocodiles menu.

I like how laid back the aussies are about a croc in the surf where people and kids actually swim. "Its really majestic" and "captivating", are not phrases i would use. More like " F going in the sea ever again or even on the beach."

If they left it it would throw off the food chain, crocodiles are native to the south east, not L.A. Endangered species could go extinct from predation. Invasive species can be bad for the environment, next time put some logic in instead of assuming leaving it would be fine.
