24 years ago I walked up Snowdon with my 4 year old son Conor. He ran ahead with so much enthusiasm. He loved Snowdonia so much that we decided to go there every summer throughout his life. When he grew up he bought a cottage in Snowdonia at Garndolbenmaen. He passed away 2 years ago 24th Jan from pneumonia. I got myself a beer and watched the whole of this in honour of Conor. Thank you so much for this it brings back happy memories.

Did Crib Goch back around 1974, as part of the horseshoe on a day identical to yours in the video. Brought back so many memories, did we really do that? The only things missing were the RAF helicopter checking that we were okay and the crowds on the summit even though the train was operating that day. I'm 70 now and unfortunately confined to a wheelchair at present, following spinal surgery, which makes your video all the more enjoyable. Thanks once again,

When I went up the route years ago it was easy to choose a way, because of the queue! One or two persons were in difficulty more because of the steep sides to the shoulder than for any good reason, like lack of three firm points of attachment as you said so well with your advice in passing.
@nosek6664 жыл бұрын
Never follow crowds in mountain, there might be people who don't know what they are doing and you end up on the wrong path or get yourself crag fast. If in doubt better return or ask someone who seems to be well equipped for advice(don't just follow them blindly either as you may end up on a climbing terrain ).The best way it's obviously to get yourself prepared :map/compass/viewranger at least

It took me years to build up the courage to climb it and it will take me years to get over the trauma of doing it. I was terrified the entire way, including the initial scramble to get to the ridge. I had to bum shuffle the entire length of Crib Goch so took me probably an hour. When I got to the third pinnacle, I took one look and thought NOPE. Luckily I found a bypass to the left (which was probably more dangerous than just going right like you did, but it felt less exposed). Once I got off Crib Goch, I felt amazing but then continuing up the mountain, the scree slopes really messed up my brain thinking I was gonna slide off the mountain (I wasn't) so by the time I got to the base of the next scramble I just had to get off the mountain quickly. I chose to then scramble down the very steeps slopes rather than continue upward. Again, carrying on would have probably been safer but my brain (and heart) just had enough!
@johnnotts24 жыл бұрын
Fears like that are best tackled with continued exposure. I used to be scared of drowning, my swim teacher repeatedly pushed me out into the middle of the pool with a stick. Now I am great at swimming, but scared of swim teachers - it's more manageable.

Appreciate this footage. I’m Welsh, and I love this walk*, but am no longer able to do this due to Multiple Sclerosis. Not that I did this walk very often before MS, being a semi professional couch potato in my younger years….. Watching this, especially around the 40/50 minute mark, whilst at the same time having a touch of vertigo in real life, almost made me throw up (tmi), so this is very realistic for me. MS symptom (vertigo) meets my long term fear of heights, then watching you traverse that knife edge walk with vertiginous falls each side of you was a ‘perfect storm’ for me….. lol….. thank god for the pause button! Watching this made my pulse rate jump…….. *when I say this walk, I didn’t take THIS route! I’m sure of it! I think I took the easier walking route - ha, decades ago, now……

53:02 that left path gives a false sense of security and takes you to the side of the mountain before vanishing into loose scree! This video is four years old and I did the route yesterday. Did the same mistake and ended up scrambling 400 feet up to the summit of Garnedd Ugain through very steep slope and a ton of loose scree. But, it was awesome! Right is right, left is death 😁 You cant really see the ridge until you get to the summit. Saw a few people coming down complaining they cant see it through the fog before they got to the summit but they also wore Wellingtons and complained google maps wasn't working so probably for the best! Also, thanks for this video- was really helpful in my research doing it for the first time without any mountain guide. Very relevant and very useful! Yes, this gives you a great feel for the route ... feel as if I was back there again. 44.03 "not as bad as it looks". At that exact spot, I noticed a sheer drop of a few hundred feet to the right and to get over that pinnacle you have to place yourself immediately above that drop and scramble up a near vertical face for several meters. It does lean away from the drop slightly and that gravity advantage is the only reason I continued my walk. To start that scramble however, I had to place my boot on a flat piece of rock about the same size as my boot that's really out on the edge with nothing below it at all. 3 points of contact ok, that should work but there is zero margin of error for a few seconds and if you fell its just a freefall through air of what looks like 3 or 4 hundred feet to the bottom of the cliff. I'd say its worse than it looks myself as the film didn't really show the drop and the level of exposure at that location. I didn't find it a technical challenge but its the most dangerous thing I have ever done in 50 years of hiking/walking and you do have to stretch a bit and cling on to get up and over that pinnacle. I wouldn't encourage anyone to go there in case they had an accident. Most of the rest of the ridge is a bit easier I think but again, there are drops so you cant afford any mistakes.

Great video, really does show the reality of the climb, I'm trying to do a similar thing by showing people whole trails, I also speed them up on KZbin to 16x speed (don't think I'd recommend it for one, might seem a bit strange and too quick). Thank you for giving me a great preview of what's to come if I try attempting the climb!
@johnnotts25 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a good idea. I am too lazy with editing to do that :) The Cullin Ridge and Cosmiques ridges could both do with some good videos that focus on accuracy.

@@johnnotts2 I feel as though we are giving some people a good spoiler of what's to come, but I hate the thought of the next generation of walkers/hikers/runner having to start afresh. Might be sometime before you see me up on a ridge, I'm starting local and slowly moving outwards, as you know yourself, the walking and recording isn't the hard part, the editing definitely takes up a lot of time!

Some say Grip Goch is a doddle, well it is possibly on a nice sunny day with little wind, but try it with low temperatures, a storm wind with lashing rain and it is quite different! You rope up by necessity, your shivering with cold, legs feel like lead and fingers so numb untying rope knots is impossible. Life feels like hell on earth.

Great Vid. I've always shied away from this Beast, thinking it was just a touch too much out of my comfort zone. but this is the perfect "how to" guide to conquering it. Ingenious route up the "bad step" . the 1st wall is at approx 18.35. the 2nd main wall is at approx 20.57 ( 21.50 when you get moving after your little break). i've seen at least 5 other POV vids and they ALL involve proper hands on scrambling for between 5 to 10 minutes. you only seem to use any upper body strength in that move after the main wall, where you try that gully, then divert Right. INSTANTLY you find much more do-able angles ! after that, it's just an occasional bit of hands for steadying. Like others have said in comments, your bypass of the 3rd pinnacle is excellent too. again, none of the other POV vid's seem to take those extra couple of steps round the corner that you do...so by the time you get to 44.28 to head Left...you take the smallest of steps up. everyone else is doing way more climbing at that point, having cut in left, earlier. Many thanks for sharing this video. It's definitely on my "to do " list now.

Thx, I am getting a real taste for ridge climbing now, especially in Europe, Cosmiques in chamonix, Zermatt etc. This route was part of a charity event I had been sleeping on a mini bus for several hours before hand so had to make it up based on rocks showing traction. Perhaps not 'the route' but certainly a route. Bottom line it's an achievable introduction that involves minimal hand work and limited actual exposure. In good conditions its a must. When wet its 'for experiance only' and in winter is a technical climb. Hope you get to do it this year. Remember to get to the carpark before 06:00 to get a place else you will have to walk up.

to get back down do you have to go back across the knife edge ?
@onetrue2173 ай бұрын
No plenty of other route’s down. Pyg track back down will take you back to Pen-y-pass car park where you likely started for Crib Goch walk. Other routes take you down the other side to Llanberis. Walked this yesterday but cloud cover up top so visibility poor. There was low chance of rain and low wind (less 6mph), these are key things to look for when walking Crib Goch. Don’t underestimate it, but a real sense of accomplishment once finished.

Thanks, last time I just went right past the junction and totally missed it, easy to miss...What minute shows the exact split from the normal pyg track?
@johnnotts24 жыл бұрын
Right at the start. That's the start of the split. It's the first fence you come accross from the car park. 16 mins from car park to that spot at the pace shown.

Really useful, thanks. Which part of the climb/video is the most difficult?
@johnnotts25 жыл бұрын
Without watching again I can't give a time index. In 2009 I 'climbed' it's all with no hands. That should give some idea as to how hard it is. If it's wet or icy use extreme caution. Else, maintain 3 points of contact and you will struggle to come unstuck
@willowmcgregor25295 жыл бұрын
That's great, thankyou.

Great vid. Still looks a bit scary in places. What gimbal did you use and what gopro settings. Obviously not wide angle and it certainly gives a better perspective. Cheers
@johnnotts24 жыл бұрын
Narrow FoV, which I think works out to about 35mm at full frame. Gimbal was the Karma grip, chest mounted. If I did it again I would head mount a dji osmo / in camera stabaliser gopro and run a power lead over my head with the same narrow fov to avoid lens distortion.

This has been on my bucket list for a couple of years now and I hope to get to the top over the summer. I'd love to do this route but I have pretty much no experience. However, the purpose of doing this is to challenge myself. So, I'm not sure if I should do Crib Goch as I've been thinking about the Pyg trail. But I worry the Pyg trail won't leave me with the life affirming satisfaction I want to get out of this. In your opinion, do you think I should stick to the Pyg (being an absolute beginner, such as I am) or is this route do-able for a beginner? Cheers
@johnnotts23 жыл бұрын
I think I first took this route aged 8. In this video I think it's completed in about 90mins. If you are physically able and not scared of exposure you will be fine.

Don't go left at about 53:00 mins as it is all scree and harder walking although it initially looks easier. Follow the route that he takes!
@johnnotts25 жыл бұрын
Thanks dude, and as a note to all I was not following 'the route'. There is not strictly a route to follow beyone the path most trodden. That's a great feature in its self that mean no one climb is the same as another. :)

Even though Snowdon is always busy the Crib Goch route is always enjoyable and highly recommended if you have a good head for heights.

Hi John, thx for a really useful educational. Im 64 and have an interest in doing it ! ! Can I ask - what shoes would you recommend - or what were you wearing ? Also I'd do the Pyg route too cos I know it , but at my age wouldn't have any interest in carrying on up to Snowdon after the ridge - so is it doable to bear left and go down via Miners ?
@johnnotts23 жыл бұрын
Assuming a dry ish day I'd wear mountain trainers. Either Slalom or inov8. Personally I steer clear of boots, they are heavier, less presise on footing and the whole 'ankle support' argument falls flat on its face when you realise you have been walking on your feet for 63 years. I don't know your fitness level. I'd say as a broad stroke if you complete a 5km in sub 25 mins you will have no fitness issues and match the pace you have seen (90mins). On the day, this was my 3rd 3000ft peak so I was going slow. A 5km time beyond 33mins would mean the whole thing would take around 4-5 hours to the top. There is no abort to the left without a steep decent.. You could do it in places but it would be easier to complete the route. You can however finish the ridge and decend via any route you like. Put simply a moderately active person whole is OK with exposure will be fine.
@ardane19563 жыл бұрын
@@johnnotts2 Thx John - yes I thought as much re footwear. Im not up to 5km in less than 30 atm - but I'd enjoy the few months challenge it would take to get there. At any rate v useful advice. I'm also thinking I'd be safer to do it with a guide.
