Very good number three. He was a perfectionist and put so much pressure on himself. The story goes that he was in the nets at Adelaide in 2013/14 facing a bowling machine delivering balls at 95+ mph at his body, literally torturing himself. We hung him out to dry after that - and forced him to open with Ian Bell in the West Indies in 2015, and then just discarded him. Very sad.

Oh we are. During 2010 and alot of 2011 England were the best test side in the world, majority of that if not all, was down to having an amazing top 3 in Cook, Struass and Trott. Having Pietersen coming in at 4 after those 3 was just perfect.

A lot of people were questioning Cook's place in the England side before this series. He had a run of poor scores the previous English season, but turned it around with a century against Pakistan final Test of the summer. All five Cook's centuries against Australia were made in Australia, and he made one on each of the main Test grounds. Can't be too many overseas players who've done that.

Having said that, the mental strength of the England top 3 in the 2nd innings was incredible to see - so far behind the game when they started to bat and yet just ground it out.

I have watched this match. I remember yet. This is ashes cup test series 2010/11. This match was 2nd test match of the series. Held in december month last week in 2010. As a cricket fan who has been watching cricket since 2009 i miss these characters in cricket. You would see good players now a days but not the characters that possessed passion and resilience like them (cook, sanga , lara , punter , sachin, kallis , g smith , pietersen , dravid , inzimam , younus khan , amla , lara). Leagues have destroyed the core of cricket . You’d see many young cricketers prioritising them leagues over their countries preserving them from becoming the greats that are gonna be talked about decades after their retirement. Miss these days when we used to witness at least 2-3 characters in every team .
