The director made this film inspired from when his sister was gun down by her ex-husband, so he questioned “What if a gun had a soul?”, “How would it feel?” and “Would it still want to be one if it had a choice?”. Thus birthed the cult classic we have now. This film was is also based on a book with a similar anti-war sentiment, but with a different story.

From “Superman” to “I am Groot,” Vin Diesel is a voice actor who I didn’t know was a great voice actor. I also love the lesson of “the body may die, but the soul lives forever” as another underlying message handling the loss of a loved one. Plus the pitch of, “What if a gun had a soul, and didn’t want to be a gun” makes this movie extra special next to this being dedicated to Susan Bird, may the forces chaos have given her peace.

Oh, The Iron Giant will forever be one of my top movies of all-time. I've probably seen it close to 50 times by now and I cry every time. It's one of those movies that I consider perfect from start to end. I loved it the first time I saw it when I was 8 years old and I still love it just as much today. Dean is probably the most relatable character for me and continues to be as I get older. All I need is my espresso, my art, and my house in the woods away from town. one of my favorite animated films ever. it hits that perfect spot between nostalgia, saccharine sweetness, and darkness/horror. spoilers below-- - - - as to how the giant survived, aside from just "it's a kid's movie, so he lives," 1) this thing didn't burn up on entry into earth's atmosphere or so much as flinch at everything else the army threw at him. he's clearly pretty sturdy. 2) he's also clearly built to break into pieces when hit with enough force rather than be crushed, so i guess you could theorize that something about how he's constructed made him fall to pieces rather than be vaporized by the bomb.

I legitimately love this movie so much, how misunderstood the giant was is indeed tragic. That he was given an incredible opportunity to be what he chose to be and he became a hero it's beautiful... That being said the thing that's always stuck with me since childhood is: the only reason he had independence was because of his crash landing. Had that not happened he'd have followed his function and destroyed earth and likely would have signaled the others to wipe out the planet, because keep in mind there's a ton of other ones out there following the function to destroy planets and likely conquer the survivors of each conquest. That alone was terrifying and really made the future bleak, one giant who chose to be more than a weapon against armies that never made the same choice because they never had the chance to break away from their function. Shame we never got a sequel because I wanted more (still do lol) and I'd love to see how they get out of that situation! (Keep in mind that the reason I believe they dodged a massive bullet temporarily is because the Giant arrived alone, he's a scout and that means when it doesn't report back there's going to be an investigation and when life is found on earth.... Yeah that's not going to end well I don't think)

I've always loved that the dent on Iron Giant's head suggests a reason that he's "not a gun" is from a trauma he received that changed his personality and perspective, and is the one element of his that he never reverts when he reassembles. The film is loosely based on a children's book written by Ted Hughes to help his kids deal with the loss of their mother, Sylvia Plath. Hughes was wildly problematic but it's still a pretty poignant part of the origin. Bird had his own loss he was exploring in directing the film, and he weaved in the gun violence element which makes it a more mature and existential story.
