One time I was smoking weed in a parking lot with my windows down. A cop pulled right up next to me, out of nowhere, with his window down and we made eye contact. He was like “That smells good”. I said “I am really sorry sir” bracing for a ticket or worse. He responded “Seriously dude? Don’t fucking smoke in your car. It isn’t worth it. Please drive safely”. Then he took off. The officer wasn't feeling so generous 😂 I ended up going to jail and getting a dui, even though I wasn't smoking I had smoked earlier. This was in Utah, which is an "any measurable amount" state, so even though there was nothing in my blood it was in my urine which counts for a dui. It's messed up! I live in the UK and two police officers were chatting as they were checking a report on a suspicious car. They noticed another car parking up with a broken tail light. They both approached the car just to tell the driver about his tail light in case he didn't know. The driver was with a woman and they saw the sign from her, asking for help. It turned out they had stopped a serial killer after finding things on the back seat of his car. All this because of a broken tail light. You are right, the police just don't know what they're going to get when a minor stop is done. This all happened at 8pm too!

This one got me Bruce...thank you for speaking to this. Me and my Grandparents were in a horrible car accident two years ago. All I remember was smacking against the back of my grandma's seat and smoke filling the car. We made it out okay, but My first thought was "Oh dear God, I've lost my family, I've lost everything." For those first few seconds all you can do is pray and be afraid. The accident happened because the car that hit us was trying to speed through a red light. both cars were totaled. If we had been hit even just a little farther than where we had been, we could have been dead. The cops that helped us were so kind, and to think that this happened to that poor officer...he was so scared. It hurts me for him and his family. Nothing is worth causing this pain.

Cops in the US generally are under a lot more public scrutiny. Bruce sorta mentioned about it when the random dude walked up on scene. If you’re doing the job in a “diverse”neighborhood the person could’ve just killed 2-3 people and you’d still have crowds forming calling the cops racists.

Apparently, common sense ain't so common! After that crash, I can just hear people saying, "Why didn't the cop just let him go and arrest him at his house?" Sounds like a fantastic idea but if they later learned that this was a kidnapping and after the bad guy got away from the police he did unspeakable things to the child and then ended his life. Those same people would be screaming 'WHY didn't the cop keep after him? He could have saved that child's life." To people who hate cops, whatever the police do it is the wrong thing to do.

Just be warned, law school has very little to do with being a lawyer. It is just 3 years of the driest theory possible. Your future law firm will teach you how to be a lawyer, because you will know nothing about the law. Also the cost.. Better watch a couple actual lawyers takes on law school before enlisting. Legal eagle on youtube has some excelent videos about it on this platform. It is very expensive and the LSAT is gonna determine a large portion of your career anyway. So be warned, again.

@@Jartran72 As a 3L, I can confirm law school is super expensive and will feel like the longest and hardest 3 years of your life. However, Jartran is right. Most law schools only teach you about the law. Very few actually teach you how to be a good lawyer and prepare you to advocate for clients the rest of your life. I would suggest you seriously consider whether you want to be an attorney or not before you get too deep in. It is a rigorous, expensive, and time consuming journey. So you need to be absolutely sure it’s what you want to do before you get halfway through your 1L year and realize you don’t really want to be an attorney. It doesn't help that these days they have like fifty different jobs besides law enforcement that ought to be handled by other agencies. A lot of the arrest videos I've seen don't need a uniformed cop with some handcuffs as much as they need some big guys in white nurse's outfits with a butterfly net. Basically every underfunded public service job like social worker or drug counselor eventually ends up becoming a cop's job one way or another. I think it being after midnight is why they continued the case. I've seen a lot of chases called off during the day as there's just so many more people both on the road and on the street. Still it's usually a department policy and often times they may have to ask a supervisor permission to continue.

sometimes its also a requirement that there be a forcible felony involved. At my department if there was a forcible felony involved then the pursuit was authorized....you didn't have to request permission, however the supervisor or the initiating officer could cancel based on traffic conditions/danger to the public.

To touch on something Bruce said. If you carry, it stands to good reason to inform the officer immediately that you are armed upon being stopped. Even if you are not in a duty to inform state. I take it a step further and keep my license, registration, and insurance in a small plastic envelope, in my visor. Should I be stopped by an officer, both of my hands stay on the steering wheel, with the envelope on the dashboard. I do not move them until instructed to do so by the officer. I've been stopped twice while carrying. Both times I was not disarmed, and the officers expressed appreciation for being forthcoming about the firearm, rather than having to be asked about it. Just some food for though.

In Wisconsin, the patrol cars have a computerized radar system. When they are on a freeway, they scan all the license plates on the cars in front of them. If the owner of a car, person car is registered to, has a warrent out for them the cops computer will alert them. What I've been told is the screen inside the patrol car will turn different colors depending on what kind of warrant it is. So, you don't have to break any laws at the time you're driving for them to pull you over, bc they know before they stop you, you have warrants. How common is that kind of radar, and wouldn't you need to be speeding or something for them to stop you?

@ikillpenguins6723 I agree but people have no way to know they ran your plates unless you are pulled over. And at that point they might make up a reason. I do know drivers that were pulled over though related to that. Also while I lived in Wisconsin not all counties had that kind of radar set up in police cars. Winnebago county sheriffs used it on Highway 41 patrolling on the freeway.

The shooter, Tyran Lamb, died just after he ran past the cop that he shot at close range. He collapsed in the grass just a bit after the clip Bruce showed ended. The clip ending like that makes it look like he got away so I had to search up the incident because I was curious if they caught him and what his sentence was. It seems that not only did he turn a lesser crime into a more serious one, he turned it into fatal one for himself. Thankfully the officer he shot survived.

@aWywardWyvern
@aWywardWyvern Жыл бұрын
While I agree, it can be a bit complicated to explain because like everything, it’s not the same from one state to another. Generally speaking a misdemeanor is a “lesser” crime and have a limit on how long you can be incarcerated (1 year in my state) while felonies could land you multiple life sentences.
@rivercitymud
@rivercitymud Жыл бұрын
In English common law (what US law is based on) misdemeanors are considered petty crimes, while felonies are considered serious crimes, sometimes called infamous crimes. In the feudal days, a felony meant that your lord or duke or whomever could confiscate your lands and cattle, or even have you executed. In modern practical terms, it means the difference between a maximum sentence of less than a year to anything more than a year. In this context you might sometimes hear the term "11-29," which means 11 months, 29 days, the maximum misdemeanor sentence in the US. Felonies also often involve the loss of voting rights, which I strongly oppose, but that's how many states do it.
@ElusiveTy
@ElusiveTy Жыл бұрын
@@rivercitymud Interesting that you're of the opinion felons should be able to vote. I think anyone that commits such an outrageous crime is clearly not of sound mind, and as such, should not be deciding who is in power.
@rivercitymud
@rivercitymud Жыл бұрын
@@ElusiveTy Felony convictions aren't psychological evaluations or even moral judgments. It can mean you're a rotten person, or it can mean you ran afoul of an issue some politician was crusading about. Disenfranchising dissidents is the work of dictators, and outlawing dissent is an easy way to create whole bunch of new felons who are otherwise decent people. What's more, shitty people still have rights. Even the most unrepentant prisoner should have a say in how the prison is administrated. There's no one else with a greater stake in the issue, and they're the ones who are most at the mercy of the law. The worst criminals are the ones whose treatment tests the fair administration of justice. It's a test that every society should want to pass. Finally, felony disenfranchisement forecloses the possibility of rehabilitation and reintegration into society. In order to care about something, you've got to have some skin in the game. Locking them out of jobs, taking away their rights, and slamming the door in their faces just guarantees that they'll stay in a life of crime. At some point the punishment has to end, otherwise it's useless as an incentive to change someone's behavior.
