I'm very curious to hear your thoughts when the Scribe arrives. I came so very close, but the more I watched the preview videos the more convinced I became that the writing capability won't be all that functional (in the way I would want it to be). That big screen, though -- I'd be all over that. The screen on my later-generation Oasis is just slightly larger than the Paperwhite's, but even that tiny bit is very noticeable.

Hi, Olly - I gave up justifying book related purchases years ago. When I was 10 or so, I had the opportunity of watching my mother's regret at not purchasing a book about the Tudor Dynasty from a university bookstore. She was married to a graduate student and had 4 small children, and my father did not support his wife working outside the home (except on his graduate coursework, but that's a separate story). She would genuinely have had difficulty finding the cash to buy the book, but she regretted it for years. Meanwhile, she read literally everything she could get her hands on about the Tudor world. I believe she could have gone toe to toe with most US based historians in her knowledge of the literature, though she never had a chance to do original research or that kind if thing. Anyway, since then, if I've had the $, I've very shortly had the book. Of course, now I'm older and faced with going through 3generations of book worm acquisitions and there is pain there, because honestly houses only have so much wall space for bookcases, plus there is all that mass when moving .... Anyway. Short answer, no, you're not an idiot. Clearly you can afford it, and you're solving problems with the purchase, and digital books are So Much Easier to pack ...

That's a great story about your mum. Sounds like she didn't let the lack of that book hold her back. And yes, ebooks are WAY easier to pack!

I’m totally interested in the Scribe. I bought the Signature Paperwhite last year and need a strong justification to purchase the Scribe. Great discussion on the new kindle scribe. I’ve preordered it as well. Basically for the same reasons. I like the bigger screen size but the iPad is heavy after reading for a prolonged time. I’m also wanting to have the ability to annotate while reading on kindle. I’m terrible about taking notes, other than highlighting a passage or sentence. And when reading eArcs that I need to follow up with a review, it would be nice to have real notes and thoughts about what I was thinking at the time I read it. I hope it’s great.

Amazon seems to market the Scribe as a Kindle Paperwhite with just a bigger screen and pen support. But otherwise, it's just a Kindle Paperwhite really from what I have seen of it. Outside of pen support and a bit bigger display, it doesn't seem to offer anything else. And Amazon's description of the device seems to pretty much say this. So I'm curious if people will like it as much as they do the Paperwhite because the price increase over a Paperwhite is quite huge for just a slightly bigger screen and pen support. I'm sure it will find a niche of people that will love it. And I think it will sell decently enough. But I think the majority will still opt for the Paperwhite and basic Kindle by a long shot. I'm also curious if we may see an updated Kindle Oasis in 2023. Or will it be phased out and the Kindle Scribe will fill its spot going forward? The Kindle Paperwhite "Signature Edition" I would argue is the slightly better Kindle over the existing Oasis. So could the 2023 lineup look like this → Kindle Basic edition, Kindle Paperwhite, Kindle Paperwhite "Signature Edition", and finally at the top the Kindle Scribe to round out the lineup? Either way, it will be interesting to see where the Oasis ends up. 🙂 With this all being said, I just ordered the Kindle Paperwhite "Signature Edition". I can't wait to use it. 😁 And I'm also getting my mom a Kindle Paperwhite for Christmas as well. (Upgraded 16GB version) I think she will be very happy. 🙂
@CriminOllyBlog Жыл бұрын
I agree that the Paperwhite is slightly better than the Oasis 3 - I prefer it anyway. As for the future of the Oasis, I think they will keep making them as a way of testing new features. Not sure if we’ll see a new one this year, but I think the next Oasis will be the first kindle with a colour E-ink screen.

E-ink is great. When I see people disparaging ebooks, I wonder whether they've tried an e-ink device, or whether they've just tried them on a phone or laptop screen, which are nowhere near as good for reading. I currently use a Kobo Libra 2. I went with Kobo because I originally had a Sony e-reader years ago, and when that stopped working I wanted one that was compatible with the epubs I already had. Kobo also works with library ebooks (e.g. from Overdrive or Libby) while Kindle doesn't. I think in the US they have Kindle library ebooks, but not elsewhere - not sure why.

I've been considering if I should buy the last new piece of tech from Amazon - the brand new Kindle Scribe; On the hand, I’m a lawyer and the amount of notes that I have to jot down during the day is, well, too many. On the other hand, I purchased a year ago an iPad Pro 12.9. It’s good for everything, however, as you mentioned, the notification can get me out of the way. The second problem is the battery life.
