@@TheArklyte I see it more as hypocracy and hysteria. The people who call themselves "protectors of democracy" are trying to "protect" democracy by stopping candidates from running in elections, and are even trying to stop the most popular candidate from running. That is completely undemocratic and hypocritical, and based on hystetical falsehoods that somehow this candidate is a "threat" to democracy. The people who try to stop the democratic process from happening are the real threat. Democracy means will of the people, not liberalism.

I just realized that from 6:00 the choir sings the famous hymn "Eternal Father, Strong to Save". It is said this is the last hymn that was sung on Sunday church service, 14 April 1912 aboard the Titanic, just hours before it sank the next day. One of the verses end up with "... For those in peril on the sea!". This is such a beautiful and majestic version we have here...

Try fighting war itself.^^ That would certainly lead to fighting human nature, which basically means fighting humans. That circle will not be closed in the foreseeable future howsoever desirable it might be.

I need to re-watch this movie. I haven't seen it since theaters. I remember not liking it because I was expecting something closer to Hunt for Red October. Now that I'm older, i'm sure I'd appreciate it more.

I'm right with you. It's interesting as you get older how films/genres change for you. I'm an action fan more than anything so this wasn't as interesting to me the first time around. This movie and The Negotiator are both on my list of films that I appreciated as an older viewer.

The footage of the sub diving for the first time is of a real US 'boomer' - denied permission to film one, the crew waited for days in the right place and 'snuck' the footage unofficially.

Hans zimmers masterpiece. Everything he has done since has felt like a variation on this to a greater or lesser degree and before the endless drone sound in his more recent scores. Simply one of the greatest movie themes ever. Tony Scott's best movie by a margin

I haven't gone back to view the the scene, but it looked like a Los Angeles class attack sub rather than a Boomer. They would have to go way north to Washington or east to Georgia to film Boomers, instead of 120 miles to San Diego where Pacific attack subs are based.

There was concern raised over how a mutiny could affect a modern nuclear sub though. In the past it would simply result in a lost ship. Is it possible though that a disagreement between a captain or XO in this day and age could lead to nuclear war? The movie was realistic enough that it brought to light a serious flaw in American naval doctrine: There is no contingency to handle the situation that occurs in the movie. Like the admiral says, they were both right. The XO went by the book, but the captain was still following his last received orders.

+Flash Gordons Themesong Good points, though if the sub had launched it would be totally the responsibility of the President who gave the order and not the Gene Hackman character as the callow Hollywood screenwriters wanted to imply!! Once you give the Launch order, expect it to be followed!! Dummies...

@navblue20

That is why you verify then launch. If Ramsey had launched those missiles then gotten the retraction order it would have been HIS ass because he did not wait for the retraction order which countermanded the 1st message. Remember the Alabama had NOT YET LAUNCHED her missiles when the second message came in and was interrupted. The Navy admitted after the fact they didn't like the mutiny angle but they also changed certain things in terms of the launching of missiles.
