this scene always got to me as a kid. the choice between the needs of the many or the needs of the few. no command ever wants to lose packs, but it is the nature of war to sustain casualties.

what was the point of trying to stop the leak when you could just come up and seal the bay?
@chrismc4105 жыл бұрын
If there was a chance to save your men and stop flooding in that bay, wouldn't you give them every chance before sealing that bay? Commanders of any unit faces the possibility of sacrificing the few to save the many. It, unfortunately comes down to one choice: Do you sacrifice the lives of three men to save 100, including your own life?

For those wondering why Barnes and the other sailors didn’t just evacuate from the begin with: Keep in mind we are watching this from the perspective of the audience. Where the scene begins, a lot of water is already on deck. What we miss is Barnes and the other sailors getting there before and working on trying to secure the leak from the moment it started flooding. They are trained to secure any leaks/ruptures/cracks as any water getting on a ship (especially a submarine) can be catastrophic. It’s their job to stop it and as sailors it’s so engrained in them to do whatever they can to do so. They are thinking that if they fail, their shipmates die. So, to them, they had to stop the leak and only evacuate at the last possible point. Second, the leadership didn’t necessarily know that letting the bilge bay flood all the way would work or not. In fact, that’s not what saved the boat. They were still sinking after. What saved them was the engineers bringing propulsion up. They were sinking regardless.
@ArtietheArchon Жыл бұрын
you're right that sealing the bay didn't stop them sinking, however at that moment sealing the bay saved the boat from an absolute fuckton of flooding that I'm not sure they would have been able to survive
