Thank you for this video, I was about to lacquer a pre built neck and was wondering what I was going to do with the frets. Video came just in time ❤

Since I'm early, I want to say that I really love these videos but there's a consistent problem of inconsistent audio volume across the channel's videos. I think you should really check on this as I needed to maximize my volume to hear this video properly and when the vids are long I will end up forgetting about it, giving me a not so fun surprise if I go to another video. One of Josh' recent videos has inconsistent volume across parts as well, which is even worse. Cheers for the work you do, though, and keep it coming.

I think it’s on your end chief, I can hear consistent audio levels on all my devices that I watch the channel on…..

It was a little on the low side, but nothing exceptional about that - tiny little bump in the volume, sorted for me. I see it all the time on KZbin, so no big deal. It wasn't exactly like my bump in volume made other videos so loud my ears exploded.

Just commenting to confirm what Darmenias has wrote. Others commenting that things are fine are probably using headphones, where natural audio compression occurs (small speaker next to ear), or have some form of auto volume levelling enabled, or a handheld device. Ben and Co. I would investigate volume normalising the videos to a set level then firmly sticking to this. If you're unsure as to the extent of the problem, compare this to a Mr.Beast video as a benchmark gold standard. Consider using neutral external monitors - never 'in ear', if after this the issue isn't audible.

I agree with the original post, the audio levels do vary quite considerably on these teardown videos. The videos from Ben's home studio are a lot more consistent- different editors perhaps?

Last year I stained and glossed a neck on a Fernandes I’m working on. It’s a plain maple neck with a rosewood fretboard. I stained the neck and fretboard with walnut to darken both and then sprayed over it all with a 2K clear. I then had to go back and clean out the fretboard slots before I regretted and when I removed the painters tape it lifted off several area of the clear coat. It bumped me out so I haven’t touched the guitar since. When I get back to it this is exactly how I’m going to do it, do all fret work first and then stain and polish.

Would my crimson fret rubbers remove the lacquer om my strat frets?
@Wilmx2 жыл бұрын
I actually just saw a Dan Erlewine video where he used bits of radius fret dam in the fret slots to prevent lacquer ending up in the slots. Thought it was a pretty slick way to get around having to do all that cleanup.

Hey there, I have a very important question and I can't find any information about it anywhere. I have an Ibanez Jem Premium with a Maple fretboard. It has an Inlay all across the fretboard, does anyone knows how this neck and fretboard is finished and what was used for it??? I mean there will be time to re-fret it and I can't find any useful info.

I have had to do this with every lacquered neck fender I have ever owned!

I've a 1997 US Tele and the lacquer is nuts. Cracked all over the place but gives it a nice antique-y look 🤣

Love this video. Although I have to say at this price point, the Jimi Hendrix Strat is NOT a budget guitar just because Fender make more expensive models and it's MIM. For the cost, the frets should not have lacquer on them at all!! It's not like it's a squire or made in China etc for $300

I spent so long chipping off lacquer on the sides on a neck recently then realized it was hiding fret end holes because that were way too short. Thanks fender.

Can acetone be used to remove nitro from a guitar? Can you use stain over nitro? Can you use tru oil over nitro?
@CrimsonCustomGuitars2 жыл бұрын
No to all three questions. You have to sand the nitro back before staining or oiling.

A rounded edge scalpel works even better for cutting the edges/lacquer, you have more control ;-)

I bought an American Deluxe Strat Plus about 30 years ago that had the lacquer applied over the frets. It would start to chip and cut your fingers if you weren't aware of it. Definitely remove it LOL!!!

Fender is an absolute embarrassment considering what they charge, they make even Gibson look good. The Custom Shop does good quality but any small time custom builder can give you a better guitar at half the cost.
