No other person could play the character of Anne Lister as well as Suranne . I guess none of us know what the real Anna Lister was really like but she’d have had to have been a woman with a similar personality. Great acting and superb series.

Very similar. The personality jumps out at you when reading the diaries. A lot of the scenes are straight from the diaries. In Season 2, when the political upheaval has hit the town, with the destruction, I was a bit surprised by the scene in the show where she tells the gang of youth on the street that she is not a "yellow" but "black" because of all the damage to the town. It was such a clever, bold, strong response of dialogue that kept her safe, in that moment, despite being outnumbered. And, I was somewhat surprised that the dialogue was straight from the diary. And, it shows her bold, clever personality to a tee. Suranne is brilliant in the role and it seemed like she was really channeling Lister in so many ways - the charm, the intelligence, the strength and persistence and many other ways.
