One of the problems with adverts, is it's difficult to know who exactly is behind them. It's possible to discover the advertising agency, but the individuals who conceive them and directors who shoot them remain hidden. Perhaps if they were exposed to scrutiny they would be less cavalier in the subjects they appropriate.

Only the industry knows who the creatives are, but it is they who are pushing the boundaries. It's an unholy alliance between commerce and art to realign the culture in their own image. Because it's done behind monolithic commercial structures, there's nowhere to push back. The public's only recourse is to search out the parent company (usually a multinational), and refuse to buy their products in future. The attack will only stop when it hits the bottom line.

These people are employed to be transgressive, and rewarded for the degree to which the public notice. Agencies are owned by old people but employ young people to tell them the future, effectively. In that sense agency creatives are like SPADs in the political arena, soothsayers of the culture with the product or the politician swept up in their vision.
