Visionary biochemist Jennifer Doudna shared the Nobel Prize last year for the gene-editing technology known as CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats), which has the potential to cure diseases caused by genetic mutations. Correspondent David Pogue talks with Doudna about the promises and perils of CRISPR; and with Walter Isaacson, author of the new book "The Code Breaker," about why the biotech revolution will dwarf the digital revolution in importance.

I’ve been following this for many years and I love seeing the progress. In 1993 I took an immunology class in college and never in my lifetime back then did we think the human genome could be synthesized and altered. My mind is blown that I am seeing this happen in my life.

As a medical assistant I've had to study muscular dystrophy cystic fibrosis and Huntington's disease and those are three very very difficult diseases to have it what they do to you is a heartbreaker. To see those cured would be a true and amazing miracle I would love to see in my lifetime.

In my family it could turn down the cholesterol gene. My dad, my aunts, uncles, cousins, grandma and her siblings all have extremely high cholesterol. 300-400, 600, 900. I'm convinced we're not intended to live past 40, without meds and surgery.

Overlooked in this is how freaking cheap this process is. It's like when semiconductors and microprocessors became cheap enough for hobbyists to build computers in their garages. That's how we got Apple and a chunk of IBM (PC) clones. That moment lead to countless innovations and right now some biohacker is in their garage working on something that might lead to a new set of innovations in much the same way.
