Steve Thompson (Burt Lancaster - NOVECENTO, BIRDMAN OF ALCATRAZ) is a hardworking armoured car driver with a fatal attraction to his ex-wife Anna (Yvonne De Carlo - THE MUNSTERS), who's now married to notorious hoodlum Slim Dundee (Dan Duryea - WINCHESTER ‘73). Unable to stay away from her, Steve has a secret tryst with Anna ... only to be discovered by Dundee. To cover up their affair, Steve convinces Dundee that he only met with Anna to get Dundee's help in robbing an upcoming payroll shipment he will be driving. The hood falls for the ruse, which triggers a series of harrowing events that ultimately lead to violence and death.

This is so noir when it started my cat was white and when it ended it had become a panther. Seriously, this is for my money one of the best 3 noirs I've seen in my life, an absolute masterpiece, and Burt Lancaster devours the screen with his raw energy. Now, *controversial opinion time* but the only thing I didnt like or believe was the chemistry between him and De Carlo, I dont think she was the best possible cast. Not a bad actress at all, but I didnt buy her part, just my two cents

Up until that point no one knew what film noir was. This defined the genre.

The parameters for film noir were defined long before 1949. _Lady From Shanghai, Force of Evil, Out of the Past, Kiss of Death, Dark Passage, The Big Sleep, Murder My Sweet, The Maltese Falcon, Stranger on the Third Floor,_ and many others had all come out before this and featured the same dark film noir aesthetics on display here. Perhaps _Criss Cross_ is one of the first truly gritty and more realistic noirs I'll give you that. Many of the previously mentioned titles had a more pulpish, dream-like approach.

Trivia: Explosives experts Nick Carmona & Del Crawford were injured during the production of 'Criss Cross' when a smoke bomb exploded prematurely inside the special effects department. Also, 'Criss Cross' was remade by Steven Soderbergh in 1995 as 'The Underneath,' & it's featured as a bonus film on Criterion's 'King of the Hill' blu-ray, spine #698. Two films for the price of one. must admit its Lancaster's debut feature yet Yvonne was the desert sandal queen before this role which she did her finest best : any movie with the ebullient scenery chewing Dan Duryea is worthy of my time
