OK....SO! Here are some things, for whoever cares or is watching this. 1.) The Episode of the Sarah Silverman program that featured her in Black Face was originally aired in 2007, and it was called "Face Wars." Timing wise, it is important to keep this in mind, since the national conversation about race has come to a particular head over the past 3-4 years. While discrimination in this country has existed for time out of mind, I'd be hard-pressed to get a confirm from the mainstream population that it was a serious topic of debate or newsworthy fodder 7 or 8 years ago like it is right now. So, there's that. 2.) The purpose of the storyline was to highlight the hypocrisy of White America when confronted with [what it would deem] blatant, politically incorrect racism; specifically, how the majority will come out to condemn such actions, but be complicit in their day-to-day microagressions, and refuse to be allies in the fight against long-standing, systemic issues surrounding defining characteristics like race or creed. NOW - HAVING SAID THAT (And having seen portions of the episode). Even with all of this being a premise behind "Face Wars," even if I wasn't a mixed race Colombian, I would still say that Ms. Silverman did a piss-poor job of getting this point across, while doing extended scenes in the aforementioned Blackface. There is no getting around the fact that the historical context behind this dramatic choice makes it a case of textbook racism, point-blank, period, end of story. I deem Ms. Silverman to be an intelligent woman & comedian, but I'm sorry, even in the realm of shock & awe comedy and equal opportunity offenders, this, in my opinion, crossed a line, and the scenes themselves were unwarranted and unnecessary in proving her point about social duplicity. Wrapping this up, at the end of the day, YES, Crissle had every right as a Black American woman to defend her position of being offended at this action, because at the end of the day, First Amendment statutes guarantee that Sarah Silverman, while being admonished, will still be allowed to pull stunts like this in whichever media forum she chooses to present her work. These two truths are an example of dualism, in that they do exist without being diametrically opposed to each other, as some would believe. However, I am of the belief that anyone with Common Sense and some respect for other people's cultures, even in their attempt to use offensive material to create humor, should know when to leave ideas [like ones that are chock full of blatantly racist bullshit such as Blackface] on the cutting room floor. PS - That dude who tried to defend Silverman's work is a joke and a bigot. In addition to being a not-so-low-key racist, he is a 1st class sexist, taking it upon himself as a male to simultaneously attempt to invalidate the feelings of a Black American woman re: her views on race-related topics, AND feeling the need to "mansplain" the work of Sarah Silverman as if she can't think or speak for herself about her material. So again, YES, Ms. Crissle did the right thing, in my opinion, by letting this jackwad know what time it is and to stop shutting down marginalized people while speaking on behalf of others. Sometimes people have to let you know that you weren't invited to the party, and it might be time for you to take your ass home. Crissle did just that.

Probably a Genius We agree to disagree, but that's art for you. In any case, the premise stands, since the script called specifically for a form of visual art that is unequivocally racist, regardless of the intent. My ultimate point, again, was the Crissle was not wrong, and as she said, this assclown's attempt at shutting her down was not only out of place, it was completely rooted in racial microaggression.

Probably a Genius I don't see how something as visually offensive as blackface can't be seen as racist, in spite of its intent. The entire point of my statement was that it can be both. Silverman's use of Blackface was both racist and satirical, and as a comedian, she should be willing to own up to that.

I don't understand how she "misunderstood the question" because the questions was inaccurate in the first place. The historical context of blackface out ways the rest. The question wasn't nuanced it was inaccurate and she set him straight. I don't know why people are trying to defend him when he was wrong in the first place. It is interesting to me the way folks keep defending Sarah Silverman by saying her sketch using blackface was satirical. Though it may have been satirical, what about it was necessary? When did it become necessary to wear blackface to prove it's problematic? Who didn't already know that? There is so much whitesplaining going on in these comments and it really is further confirmation of the privilege that leads one to believe he/she knows what's best for oppressed groups and how they should and shouldn't respond to actions representing centuries of racist attacks and stereotypes.
@Jasmine3ification8 жыл бұрын
The explanation of a satirical TV show on, where a woman puts on black face in order to criticize racism in general is whitesplaining? Shows like these make fun of EVERYONE, and that's the point. They push boundaries, and make people think. I thinks it's OK to be offended, but once you make a claim that someone is racist, you have to provide evidence of that.
@MsMalikkaRogers8 жыл бұрын
White folks trying to explain to Black folks why blackface is acceptable in certain situations is most certainly whitesplaining. "Sit and let me explain to you why this disrespectful practice is actually funny and good for your people in this instance." Come on now. It's fine if everyone doesn't share the same sense of humour. What isn't fine is to dismiss the hundreds of years of racist oppression that lead some folks to the conclusion the skit was problematic.
@Jasmine3ification8 жыл бұрын
+Ms M That isnt what was happening. they weren't explaining anything and it is known why blackface is offensive. The point was the obserdity of it all. Just because a white person tells an edgy joke doesn't mean they are talking down to you or dismissing the history of of whatever it is someone could be offended by. it was a joke that didn't land with certain people. thats basically it.
@MsMalikkaRogers8 жыл бұрын
You don't get to tell folks how they should interpret the skit when they are viewing it through a lens of their own history and experiences. Stop condescending and trying to advocate for a moment and instead consider the issue in your approach. If YOU see it differently, that is fine, but what you needn't do is determine your interpretation is the only valid one so those offended by the imagery related to a disrespectful and bigoted practice must be wrong. For some folks, this isn't simply about a joke falling flat. It's about a painful history they don't find humorous and for that - they don't need to be condescended to or be the audience for more whitesplaining.
@MsMalikkaRogers8 жыл бұрын
Actually, there isn't a "problem" with my perspective and I don't need reassurances I am entitled to my opinion. I'm well aware I am, which is clearly indicated by my comments. I do, however, see a problem with all this "caping". Comprehension of all my comments will clearly show I made no blanket statements, but perhaps the desire to try to discredit a varying perspective limits the willingness to first understand it.
@grawakendream89803 жыл бұрын
If I didn't know better, I'd say the argument is always "oh you don't understand", "you have to put it into artistic and political context"; it never seems to be actual community responsibility, sense of compassion or taking ownership of it. Never seems to be "gee, I could see how you take it that way", "your perspective is completely legitimate", "I'm sorry", "wow, you're right". Just pretty much defensiveness instead

+alli9513 Did you watch the episode from Silverman (S2E3)? Commenting after watching the material may just give a new ensight into why he stated that. Maybe not as well. But I'd be interested in your take AFTER having seen how Silverman worked her comedy into exploiting ignorance, not race in that episode.
@lovepink55018 жыл бұрын
+Kemp Kennedy Do you have a clip? I doubt my opinion would change considering a) I have never found any of SS material funny, clever, socially conscious or original and b) I don't think there is any context in which black face is funny to me. I don't find black comics doing white face funny either.
@lovepink55018 жыл бұрын
+Kemp Kennedy Besides at the end of the day, I'm not going to take a white man's word on whether something is racist or not without some serious credentials. And even then, I'll need several people of colour to vouch for him just to be sure.
@lovepink55018 жыл бұрын
+Kemp Kennedy You make racism sound like it comes down to hurt feelings. It's not a debate where we can just agree to disagree to have different opinions about it. You can't decide something isn't racist because you don't feel like it's racist. It's racist because it continues the cycle of oppression, misrepresentation and marginalization of people of colour. It's not really debatable. The reason I'm not going to take an uneducated (as uneducated in racism) man's word for it is because he hasn't experienced the effects of racism and therefore doesn't know what to look for. I'm not saying every white man is ignorant, but that's why I'm saying I need credentials.
@THDTPSEvents8 жыл бұрын
alli9513 When it comes to the interpretation of a skit, you most definitely can disagree or debate about whether something is racist. That is pretty much what we are doing. You can say I am wrong, which I get you are saying, but you are commenting on something I don't even think you have seen yet. Satire and sarcasm are used by comedians often to exploit feelings on a variety of topics like race. You could debate that when Chris Rock talks about black people in his comedy show that he is being 'racist' against other black people. After all, he is stating some negative things about blacks in his stand-ups. I don't imagine you would say he is using racial stereotypes however. In the case of Silverman, she doesn't even go as far as Chris Rock (who can 'get by with it' actually being black). She shows the nonsense of white people who even innocently try to dress up in black face, and in the end, shows other white people just why it is offensive and should never be done. That is what I took from that episode. Others may not get that, or not care due to content at face value. Again, this is about a skit, not about people's understanding of racism in general by other races.

Silverman is not the comedian to go up to bat for, she is purposefully stirring the “racism pot” in order to get some laughs. At the end of the day she’s ok with taking the cheap shots. After all, she doesn’t have to wait tables at the local deli.

The guy states his opinion and asks his question in a civilised manner. You can disagree with him, so explain him why and maybe change his mind. It is better to keep contact with people with a different opinion then pushing them away from you. If you strongly disagree, you should keep commutation lines open, or else violence might be the next step. The way Crissle responses will makes sure anyone with the same opinion and question, might go underground with their opinion and give up on even trying to solve this issue. The logical next step is violence. She's part of the problem, not the solution.
@MrPainterboy695 жыл бұрын
Hans Keesom so true if we can’t talk things out we can’t change minds. Imo she should explained why it was bad instead of shutting him down ( by the way I think Sara Silverman is a hack ) but if you shut people down instead of having a conversation than you’ve only entrenched people in there beliefs. Then people will seek out echo chambers because they only fight with the other side instead of talking things out
@MrPainterboy695 жыл бұрын
Hans Keesom what a leveled headed response. Sadly this kind of reason and common cents is not very common anymore

@@MrPainterboy69 On Sarah Silverman, a bit too much lefty to me but let's consider the black face video on it's own. I get what she is trying to do and I feel the burn of this topic ;-) Funy enough it describes the problem with intersectionality etc. Comedy is always on the edge and will always be a bit irritating or hurtfull for some. So some room needs to be given. At the same time, I would not have done this video if I was a comedian as one can see it coming back as a boomerang. At the same time, any comedy has that posibility and does that mean you stop with comedy all together? F.e. we do not make yokes about Islam anymore and I am not sure that is a good thing.

"taking it at face value." "those of us who know the history of Black face..." That's a lot of caveats for Bull$hit. The very fact that "Black people had to do Black Face to get jobs," is a huge Tenet of why it was a PROBLEM...sir.
@johndrumpf98882 жыл бұрын
The majority of black people I've seen review Robert Downey Jr's blackface in Tropic Thunder had zero problem with it, so clearly, you cannot take comedy at face value, especially when it is satire or irony designed to criticize the very thing you think it is promoting.
@NoahDaSlasher8 жыл бұрын
..the point of Sarah doing it was so that characters on the show would rightfully treat her like a disgusting person because her CHARACTER was doing something ignorant and disgusting.
@manueliglesiasvila59489 жыл бұрын
Well,in order to determine whether Silverman's skit was truly racist or not, some research has to be done. Most of her work relies on making fun of those stereotypes (racist, bigoted people). One does need to have context on the issue to make such claims, and with all due respect, if the woman on the video feels offended by her comedy, so be it. Comedy is bound to offend people, but blatantly censoring it sounds a little fascist to me.
@jellykid50989 жыл бұрын
Sarah might not be racist, but she understood blackface and did it anyways, therefore the action is racist and since she did a racist act, that gives people the right to lose all respect for her regardless of whether or not she is truly racist at heart.

***** So we should all go out and yell 'fuck the Jews' followed with 'I'm just making fun of how ridiculous it sounds'? So we should all go out with our eyes taped and do a Chinese accent followed by saying 'It's just a social commentary, I love Asians!'? Fuck is wrong with you?

You have to have a certain level of intelligence to understand comedy and this woman clearly does not have it. Just because you don't understand the meaning of it doesn't mean it's racist. Sit down bro

What about her response communicated that she misunderstood Sarah's intention? Not to mention that Sarah herself came out fairly recently to say how wrong she was to ever do it.

Saying she was racist for doing so. Context matters, the whole joke was black face is so abhorrent that that is what is getting the negative reaction in the skit. How does that translate she thinks less of black people because they are a specific race ?

Reminds me of the diversity trainer at work casually saying the n word because I guess he has earned the right to say it and 'I do this training all the time and no other black person has ever had a problem,' when I called him on it. Standing there feeling superior and privileged to have a job where he could say the n word to his hearts content. Not on my watch. I seriously have learnt about how to address certain issues on race from listening to Crissle.
