Brilliant analysis of such a powerful classic. I didn't realize quite how many layers of instruments they added to that final chorus, and literally had no idea of the crowd vocals in the second chorus. Such pure emotion put into this song.

Chop Suey is such a masterpiece. It will always be one of my favorite songs of all times. Hearing all the isolated tracks really drive this home for me. I love the complexities of Serj's voice, I love how sweet Daron's voice sounds, and I love the way they harmonize.

I have watched several videos of yours, and what really sets you apart, is your willingness to try and make whatever sounds you are hearing, without really caring how well they are, as you are more interested in learning it yourself, and trying to explain it to us. Then I got to this video which sets you apart even more. I have never seen anyone break down the tracks before. There was so much going on underneath everything, and you showing it changed changed the whole sound, and game me a new appreciation for everything actually going on there. I'd definitely love to see more of these.

@@mrcroob8563 It's been 5 months...but I think I meant like how she'd do harsh vocals, and such, even though she is not really trained, nor good at them. A lot of vocal coaches, will stick to what they know, and are good at...if they even try to sing at on in the videos. She gives it a try anyway, and makes it feel more genuine.

I really enjoyed your analysis and it gave me a greater appreciation of System of a Down. This seems like a unique approach that sets you apart from the other vocal analysis channels. As a fellow Australian I would love to see some love to Australian bands. I understand while you are starting the channel you need to go for more immediately attention-grabbing material. As far as multirack analysis, I don't know enough about music to make good recommendations, which is why I watch these kinds of channels as a kind of music appreciation class. General suggestions of things that would probably get a lot of hits are things like the Japanese band - Wagakki Band - Senbonzakura (和楽器バンド / 千本桜) (that is the film clip and more likely to get a copyright strike), the live version with Amy Lee is frequently analysed by a variety of musicians. Or the Indian band Bloodywood with Dana Dana would also be a good choice. If you want any Australian band recs - I have a whole list.

One potential idea: I listened to Silverchair a alot around 20 - 25 years ago. They were very young when they started making music and became popular. The front singer doesn't have have the most impressive voice and singing capabilities initially, but especially considering their age then, the music was really quite good and the musical development they made was very interesting to see and listen to. The first record (fromgstomp I think it was called) was still a bit simple and basic, but has a few really good tracks already. Next was "Freak Show" I think. Harder record, different sound as well, better production. And after that it got more interesting because they also started using orchestras or at least some more classical instruments like strings. A few years later they stopped making music and the later albums I didn't like very much ... too much pop and somehow a bit strange. They departed a bit too much from their roots I guess (although the song writing of the late stuff wasn't bad either). Here are a few song suggestions: Emotion Sickness (interesting back story about the piano layer in that song by the way) Spawn again (one of their hardest song I'd say) Black tangled heart Steam will rise Nobody came Learn to hate

That was a very interesting analysis of chop suey, never really thought about what was going on in the background for any SOAD song tbh lol just took it for what it was. I didn’t really pay much attention to layering in general until I watched an interview/reaction to the tesseract song ‘legion’ between Chris Liepe and the singer Dan Tompkins. Dan mentioned during the interview that on the album version of his tracks he never held back on layering as it felt like each layer is like a brush stroke on the canvas of the song. Interest that both you and Dan made painting references regarding music. I highly recommend you have a look at that interview or listen to the song, Dan’s vocal performance is amazing.

Absolute classic ! I got Systems first album after hearing the song WAR and loved it , I remember in 2001 I heard a new song was going to be played on Triple J on 3 hours of Power ( the old Metal Show ) and of course it was Chop Suey, I will never forget hearing this for the first time, it truly blew my mind as did Toxicity when it came out a month or so later. It's so cool hearing the seperate Vocal Tracks , the work the band and Rick Rubin put in to this masterpiece is incredible! Great Video.

I have learned so much more, and appreciated even more, a song that I thought I knew and appreciated enough already! The emotion and heart with which they made it makes us feel so much. And you explain so beautifully how. I thank you for the attention you paid to the lines "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit" and "Father, why have you forsaken me?" which are indeed relevant as part of the Catholic identidy (I don't know how much these guys believe nowadays, but being of Armenian descent I'm sure these lines and their meaning were important during their upbringing). As per proposed songs, have you already done Paranoid Android by Radiohead? It's been already two decades since my pals and I would listen to this song over and over and tried to replicate each of the voices we could hear from the middle, the "rain down on me" part (3:30ish). That was super unique. On our Classic rock station here in Calgary, they used to have a DJ that would play only the vocals of songs and you could hear some REALLY interesting things in it. Like people talking in the backgrounds and whatnot. Very cool.
