The song is about suicide, and how people will condemn, or mock people who are suicidal as if they are weak, and pathetic. The first verse is basically speaking about an unstable person with an unstable life. Well adjusted people from the outside looking in tend to believe that mentally/emotionally unstable people are exaggerating their issues for the sake of gaining sympathy, or attention, and believe they are a mess because of their own choice. Some people will go as far as to say that a suicidal person deserves to die without even considering the emotional impact of what they are saying about that person in such a vulnerable mental state, especially young people who are very insecure, impressionable, and haven't found themselves yet. This song holds even more validity in the age of the internet, and social media.

"During an interview, guitarist Daron Malakian explained the meaning of the song: "The song is about how we are regarded differently depending on how we pass. Everyone deserves to die. Like, if I were now to die from drug abuse, they might say I deserved it because I abused dangerous drugs. Hence the line, 'I cry when angels deserve to die.'""

You forgot to mention why the weird title. The original title, censored by the publishing company, was (caps are mine) "Self-righTEOUS SUIcide". If you pronounce and listed to the capitalized chars, they sound exactly the same as "Chop Suey". And as a polite middle-finger they included a scene eating "chop suey" into the musical video.

Of course Serj is doing the main singing but it's the guitarist Darren who is harmonizing. But they sync it absolutely perfectly note for note.

I love System, but it's not really that hard to "synchronize note-for-note perfectly" when you're using Pro Tools and other digital wizardry in the studio. I've seen this song performed live, and while pretty darned good it was far from perfect, note-for-note synchronization.

Great reaction, I think everyone who listens to this song remarks about how they've never heard anything like it before. Keep it going with SOAD, they really are a groundbreaking group in so many ways! I would suggest "Question!", "Sugar", "Hypnotize", "BYOB", "Holy Mountains", "Suggestions", and "IEAIAIO", not necessary in that order, for starters! 😊

So for the midsection “Father into your hands I commend my spirit” has a pretty crazy backstory: the singer Serj Tankian was having trouble coming up with ideas so he picked a book from the producer’s collection which happened to be the Bible. The line was randomly chosen by the singer and it happened to be Jesus’ last words on the cross.

There are so many layers in the last 40-50 second of the song, with, it's by far one of my favorite parts of any song when the piano and strings kick in. I know quite a few people who didn't even realize the piano and strings were there. The piano draws my attention every time, it becomes the focus of the music for me.

If you get a chance, check out the isolated vocals/instrumentals of this song. There is way more going on than meets the ear, I only discovered this recently myself when a reactor actually had the isolated up. This band is not your typical garage junkies making noise. They are artists. This is one among many possible and likely reasons their music holds up to this day.

I just saw that same video the other day. I've heard this track countless times and never knew some of the vocals/instruments that are mixed in. Rick Rubin produced it, so I really wasn't overly surprised.

I haven't done a deep dive into it yet but I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of SOAD's melodic and harmonious influence is from Armenian folk music. That is their heritage and a lot of their music is about the Armenian genocide.

Regarding that “C” section, you may be thinking of Jesus Christ Superstar. Both in the musical and biblically, Jesus’ last words on the cross were “eloi, eloi lama sabachthani?” (father, father, why have you forsaken me?) and “father, into your hands I commend my spirit”.

Ironic story about that part you said you've heard before and is an earworm....Serj, the singer, didn't have lyrics for that part of the song. So Rick Rubin told him to just grab a book from the bookshelf and open to a random page and point his finger, and that's what he got.

It was just "Suicide" and the label was not liking it that much. So they decided to chop it thus Chop Sui-cide and Chop Suey to make a play with the dish, which the band thought it was a way better name anyway.
@fautless
@fautless Ай бұрын
@@deanmolko5892wasn’t “Massive Suicide” because the original record on the song and from the firsts albums released there is an whisper voice at the beginning: we are committing a massive suicide. Another fact I remember: song name was switched because it was scheduled for 9/11… and record company didn’t want any troubles with that

The story of thise lyrics is: Rick Ruben (producer) says in a podcast that Serj picked a random book out his library to find lyrics for a section of Chop Suey and landed on the phrase: Father, into your hands I commend my spirit Father, into your hands Why have you forsaken me? In your eyes forsaken me In your thoughts forsaken me In your heart forsaken me This is from the Crucifixion scene in the Bible. I think it's used in Jesus Christ Superstar as well
