There's no doubt he's certainly one of the very top players in today's game . Inspirational for Portugal in many International tournaments . It isn't really fair to compare him with Pele or George Best as they had to contend with hard tackles , when you watch some of their games the teams would be down to five a side by half time .

Also the pitches & the balls themselves were a lot more difficult than modern day versions, yet they did similar amazing feats to these modern players. Games in the English First Division (now Premier League) in the `60`s, were often played on pitches in Winter with ice & snow still on them. Georgie Best regularly displayed amazing balance despite hard tackles & poor pitch conditions. Sadly, there is not as much recorded visuals of his skill & what there is, is of poorer Tv quality than today. Most is from the coverage on (The Match Of The Day) BBC Tv program.

Hi Amanda, you could checkout Bobby Charlton & Ronaldinho. Bobby was playing from the late `50`s through to the mid- `70`s & had a rocket of a shot often from long range. Also scored many headers. Ronaldinho was the Brazilian Attacking Midfielder who played for Barcelona just before Messi came through the ranks. He was doing many of the amazing tricks seen later with other players before them. He was amazing to watch, especially when he was in his flow of movement, often from one end of the field to the other.

My team was Newcastle united up here in the north . I just think they get paid far too much in comparison to what a soldier may receive for putting their lives on the line . For me personally, as a fan off football and Chelsea for over 47 years, my GOAT is Diego Maradona. Then followed by the great Johan Cruyff and then Pele before getting to either one of Messi or Ronaldo. Interesting video! 💙

The Messi v Ronaldo debate goes on and on and on. However, they are different type of players. Robaldo is more pace, power and strength. Messi is more of a technical ball carrier and finesse player in my opinion. This debate will never be over.

I'm OLD SCHOOL, having been born 3 March 1964 and for me it has to be Edson Arantes do Nascimento ... PELE ... 3 Time world cup winner (1958, as a 17yr old, 1962 & 1970) with Brazil, most famously at Mexico '70, with the greatest international team ever assembled. They won the 1970 tournament without drawing or losing a single game (7 matches) and only failed in one game, against England, to score more than 1 goal.

Amanda, asking who was the best footballer is going to prompt responses based on the age of the individual replying. Current fans will say Ronaldo, Messi, Haaland, or Salah though Scholes and Giggs were also phenomenal (as was Steven Gerrard, Gareth Bales, and the most successful British penalty taker - Matt Le Tissier). Older fans will likely point to Maradona, Ruud Gullitt, or Zinedine Zidane. Pele has to be up there with Eusebio, George Best, Bobby Charlton and Bobby Moore, though as previously stated the modern football is significantly lighter and designed to accommodate swing. Older footballs were made of hand-sewn leather (hence heavier when it was raining). The tackles were also more brutal - maybe watch Chelsea versus Leeds United (1970 FA Cup final - modern referees state they would have issued 11 red cards if the match had taken place today but only 1 yellow card was issued) to get a feel for how ruthless footballers were (hence nicknames like Norman "bites your legs" Hunter; Ron "Chopper" Harris, and Stuart "Psycho" Pearce).

Hi Amanda, If you want to react to the greatest ever then you have to react to Ronaldinho, Maradona's best moment's. Whilst it's true Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo racked up better figures they devoted their whole lives to football from 6 or 7 years old Being the first in training and the last to leave everyday and still didn't produce the mastery of the ball that Maradona and Ronaldinho did. Ronaldinho and Maradona however achieved similar levels whilst being out partying until early the next morning. And in Maradona's case often being drunk and high on cocaine. Imagine if they'd been more professional. Also you should look at Ronaldo the Brazilian not to be confused with Cristiano. Injuries blighted Ronaldo throughout his career often making him slightly worse each time but still he is considered by many to be the best Striker of all time and it's arguable that without those injuries he'd have almost certainly posted better numbers then Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo

I'd rate Ronaldo much higher if he wasn't such a cheat and a diver. What he did to Rooney was the worst, getting him a red card for nothing, then winking at his manager as if he was proud of it. My favourite all time player is Thierry Henri, a true gent with exceptional skills.

Thierry had hundreds of games and all you can think of is one international game? Says a lot about the man.
