How many talk about you guys at? I wanna lay around and call you back……. For years, but more so recently, the Criterion Collection has belatedly recognized female film directors by reissuing on home video examples of their work. Several Americans (Dorothy Arzner, Martha Coolidge, Karyn Kusama and Gina Prince-Bythewood among them) have made the grade, and so have a number of French ones (Agnès Varda primarily, but also Claire Denis and Céline Sciamma). Yet Criterion deserves particular praise for the spotlight it occasionally trains on an even more neglected group of distaff filmmakers, those from the former Eastern Bloc. True, the offerings, chiefly Larisa Shepitko’s “The Ascent” (Russia) and Márta Mészarós’s “Adoption” (Hungary), haven’t exactly been plentiful, but what’s there is cherce-to quote Spencer Tracy decidedly out of context. The latest addition to this small but significant list pairs two important films directed by Kira Muratova on a double-disc Blu-ray set. Though born to a Russian father and Romanian-Jewish mother in what is now Moldova, Muratova (pronounced moo-RAT-oh-vah) is today generally considered Ukrainian because of her decades-long professional association with Odesa, the city in which she made most of her movies and where she died in 2018 at age 83.
