Looking it up on Wikipedia, apparently this game was decently well-received when it came out, and was super low budget (like, 700 grand in modern money, which is relatively cheap for a game that features live actors and whatnot). Hell, the villain was played by the owner of the company. This isn't really a dig at your criticism or anything like that, I just thought that was super neat.

The whole "temperature at which paper burns" thing is, uh... well, I guess the developers expected everyone to know it because of Fahrenheit 451. That's why the book is titled that. Yes, devs, it's a well-known book, but not everyone has read it, and even those who have might not remember that or make the connection. As soon as you said that was the number it wanted, I knew the answer, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's something everyone's gonna know.

I think its the perfect combination of "almost no one is going to get this immediately" and "almost everyone is going to feel dumb as shit after they work out what it is" that makes for an ideal crossword puzzle clue. Like, I was doing a puzzle the other day that asked for the Italian word for 20 and once I had enough letters filled in to guess it was "venti" I think like 3 coworkers audibly groaned that they hadn't figured it out sooner. I don't think it works so well in a timing-heavy video game tho.

Farenheit 451 is a novel written by Ray Bradbury. The title is a reference to the temperature at which paper combusts.
