Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I’m 40 and have lower back issues. I’ve wasted tons of money over the years on different personal trainers with the hope of one day finding the right one. No luck, so I gave up on personal trainers and just train myself with the help of your videos and those of your colleagues. I also do my own lower back rehabilitation with videos from other trusted trainers. If you have any tips on searching for legit trainers on the internet, please share. Thanks again for all of your help.

Finding legit trainers on the internet... tough... but honestly I haven't spent much time doing that just because of advertising costs / limited exposure. Your best bet is to do what you find to work best for you. And what I mean by that is that if there's no one in your area, then you have to use online trainers. But then the more research you do, the more you'll know...

I particularly liked your third thing, the reassessment". Also the "why" for any assessment they give. If they don't tailor your program to correct your weaknesses, they aren't helping you. Most trainers say "check with your doctor" and ask if the doctor said it was okay to exercise and that is it. Many gyms have people sign that a doctor has okay'd exercise. I've noticed a few trainers that do a fitness assessment, a few that do their own medical assessment (asking questions about injuries, health, prior medical procedures, etc), and a few who do flexibility assessments. But the number of trainers who do periodic reassessments is a tiny proportion of those who simply give a fitness test of some kind, and decide to increase the trainee's ability to do more pull-ups . Another scary thing is the gym goer who selects their trainer because the trainer looks good with large biceps or a tight bottom. Half those trainers have no idea how they got in shape and many of them will be out of shape by age 35. Their physical attributes are merely a result of being 22 years old and having played sports.

SOOOO much #truth right here. Thanks Kelley for writing this up. Unfortunately this has become the norm and so many people are wondering why they are hurt, still not reaching their goals, and broke... -Brian

Yes absolutely agree, assessment is a must . It’s important to also emphasize the importance of this assessment.A lot of people think it’s just as easy as the Instagram videos shows us , and are not willing to do the boring posture / correction related exercises first, until they got injured

Agreed with all points! As many people as you can help, you can hurt just as many with not having a systematic, formal approach! 💪🏽❤️

Don't be afraid to ask your trainer the purpose of the assessment and what they are looking for. There are many assessments BUT an assessment can become pointless if there's no valid reasoning as to why they are performing it.

It's tricky but the best way is to record your movement from the back, front, and side. You need three angles of one movement to correctly assess yourself.

The flip side though, is if have a history of lifting - body weight plus 20 with barbells with good form, but the trainer sees you are over 60 - lifting for longer than they have been alive- and they decide you should do battle ropes, stretch chords, & bosu balls. Ugh.

Eh, I felt like it was a wasted session. I did it- but then went back to my contreras’ Strong Curves regiment- gluteal goddess - The battle ropes were cute and fun for a session- and I have stretch chords at home for my non-gym days. When I drive 20 minutes in a blizzard to the gym, it is for the barbell work.
