When Bilbo finally drops the ring into the floor, it lands flat with a deep thud...very unnatural. It underscores how weighty and evil it really is. That part really stood out to me.

I was 5 years old and was in and out of the hospital. I was released for a short time before I was diagnosed with child hood leukemia and I was annoying my mother so she tossed me a book with all these ruins on it and I was fascinated. It had a map with a place called Lonely Mountain on it and a dragon. It was the Hobbit. From that day and through college and beyond I was a fan of Tolkien. I even wrote research papers on him and his works. When I heard of The Fellowship of The Ring coming out when I was a junior in college I was just thrilled. I had always dreamed of it being given a large movie of the Trilogy. So Tolkien's works have more meaning to me then just a franchise. His works inspired me and partly got me through all my treatments and to work hard to get into college and get my degrees. (Star Wars also came out when I was going through chemotherapy. ) Its just sad what they are doing with both of these works.

My friend and I went to the movie props that was the LOTR tour when it was in Houston . Most amazing thing to see all of the trolls, armor, and of course weapons up close. It was packed out and you could only move forward, and had one hour to complete the exhibit. Then in one room, it had the tree and Boulder props displayed so you followed a path that led to a cliff. When I looked over, there was Boromir floating on the water with his sword. Amazing. I teared up, it was so real. I am so blessed to have seen that exhibit. Will never forget it.

I love the Boromir character and the way he redeems himself and the next two movies give you context of why he was so desperate for any edge over Sauron’s army and how his father has put so much pressure on him to bring back the ring that he’s not thinking logically.

That's characterization at its finest. In the first movie, you can sense his desperation and understand why he did what he did, his remorse at what he had done and his burning desire to right what he had done wrong. That would have been enough. But then, in the flashbacks of the other two movies and the growing madness of Denethor, you can see WHERE Boromir had come from and why he even showed up in the first place, giving him even more depth. And it doesn't feel tacked on or an afterthought.

In the books it is shown that Faramir received the same dream that took Boromir to Rivendell. If Faramir had gone (and if it had been the Faramir from the books, not the guy who allows Smeagol to be beaten and who takes the ring right to the middle of a war zone) it would have been a very different story. But of course it is dramatically much more satisfying that Denethor sent his favourite son, who he judged as stronger and more capable of doing his own will.

I think in the books the existence of Tom Bombadil does a lot to really sell how much history the world has. The fact that the ring has no effect on him and he's that old really establishes the idea that even the one ring and the war surrounding it is quite a small thing relative to the world and its history. I think the films accomplish something similar courtesy of all the landscapes, relics, and monuments to eras passed like Weathertop and the Argonath.

i still say the Balrog is one of the gold standards of CGI even to this day. The problem with most CGI is that the more of it you actually show a viewer, the easier it is to tell it's not really there. With the Balrog they kept it hidden as much as possible with darkness or smoke, letting the menace build in the mind of the audience and giving it an ethereal quality that helps the viewer get lost in the moment most CGI even today fails when it's overused to the point where it becomes obvious. The artist is so proud that they want to show you every pixel... which just gives you every chance to notice it's also fake....

A guy named Phil Dragash did a one man audio play of the books where he does all the voices based off the film portrayals, uses the film score, and uses sound effects and audio layering to make it immersive. He put it on KZbin and of course got flagged and he had to remove it but it can be found online if you look hard enough and I couldn't recommend it more, he does an astounding job.

After bingeing most of your vids in about a week, I came to genuinely respect your passion for storytelling and knowledge of how it should be done. I agree with your emphasis on well-written, believable characters that you can enjoy going on a journey with. And the deepest, most fundamental aspects of your criticism have inspired me to finally do something. Something I knew I wasn’t ready for when I first imagined it. For the last 20 years, I have written roughly 1 million words for friends and family, with the simple purpose of earning adequate skill at storytelling. I honed my writing, and even ultimately benefited from deep, painful personal struggles, so that I could finally tell a specific short story. It complements and builds up one of your favorite films. And, incidentally, it also showcases many examples of genuine masculinity displayed in a variety of ways. Further, I feel it sets a very high bar for what respectful, quality “fanfiction” should strive to be. Upholding a beloved work. Understanding it, valuing it, and forgiving any supposed flaws. Contributing a modest addition to someone else’s great legacy. Underscoring and deepening the arc of an already beloved character. Teaching the same positive lessons with the same noble themes, in a slightly different way. Honoring the work, the creator of that work, and all those who have come to love it for what it is. I strove to keep it focused, purposeful, limiting it to just 22,000 words. It may not be perfect, but it certainly tries to be. I hope you will consider giving it a read. Based on what you’ve shown everyone of your true self (behind your hilarious outward persona), I believe you will approve of these efforts. Actually in the book Galadriel upon meeting Frodo tested him telepathically, and so after looking into the mirror, he tested her in revenge, offering her the Ring. As the ringbearer, he became very wise and perceptive, even to the point of discovering that Galadriel was the bearer of one of the three elven rings, while Sam didn't see anything. Furthermore, Sam didn't even understand what they were talking about near the mirror. So, Frodo wasn't like "I don't want to be ringbearer anymore, I'll give her the Ring".

I still have no idea how Voxis has such a low sub count. Same goes with 21Kiloton. They are two of the most hilarious KZbinrs (along with yourself), and you blew up nicely, but they are both having a slow build up. So it is nice to see you get Professor Tosspot on, I hope it boosts his channel. If you could though, get 21Kiloton on (although you will have to talk about gaming as he only does shitty games). I hope Voxis blows up after this, although I think he should rename his channel to Professor Tosspot, to make it more catchy. Voxis Productions almost sounds corporate.

I absolutely love 21K and Voxis they are my yt hidden gems (i hope that changes soon and they both blow up as well they deserve it to be sure), the drinker was in that boat as well when I found him at 10k subs as an unknown but his growth over the last year and a half has been utterly insane, he simply can't be "hidden" gem anymore by any definition. He's def turned into a precisely cut diamond at this point. On the point of tosspot and his monetization, I think at 100k subs yt re-evaluates and becomes infinitely more apt to monetize channels. I've also thought about Voxis changing his name to Prof Tosspot or variation of that as it's simply more catchy and looks a ton better then the name of a production company. I think it would give him a bit more name recognition and fan awareness. I do admire that him and 21 seem to give zero fucks when it comes to outside influences and ALWAYS put their content first. U simply gotta give them so much credit and respect for that. I honestly hope they eventually get the respect and success they so richly deserve.

Have just been watching « Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring Appendices», so this was fitting! Highly recommend watching the Appendices for all Tolkien and general movie fans. It really shows what insane amount of love, passion and talent that went into the movies!

This was such a fascinating and entertaining discussion. Lots of ideas to ponder, reminders of powerful scenes with no images needed. We’ve all seen this movie trilogy multiple times, and most of us - at least the older ones - have read the books too. We don’t need a teensy video of the movie because the insights and rich conversation are everything. Thank you for sharing it, and thanks too to Voxis for his lively side of the exchange. I fear that too many young people and writers of TV series and movie dialog don’t realize how wonderful real conversation between interested friends can be.

for me it goes back well before the great Peter Jackson films, my father was a Tolkien and fantasy fan and as a child in the 70s my father took me to see the animated film in the theatre. at that time my father had retired and took me on a 2 or 3 year long road trip in a Volkswagen van with his savings, so for 2 or 3 years i was not exposed to other kids at all and i was seeing nature and the country rather than tv so i didnt even know Star Wars existed at the time. at the very end of the 70s we had settled down and i had started school and made friends and got star Wars mania as every kid of the time did, but at home mt father rented our spare room to his friend and co worker who was a college student and introduced us to D&D and i would role play with my father andhis friends and the shadow of Tolkien was always there. for my entire life "49 years" i have dreamed of this moment, and now they are going to absolutely ruin it. making a series that just didnt turn out great is one thing, but they are essentially deliberately sabotaging this series for the BlockRock agenda, for the message.

My Scottish dad loved the books. And I read them as a teen. And Tolkien grandson or possibly great grandson lived in my town in the black country. He ran a local bicycle shop in the late 90s. Not sure on the Tolkien family wealth before the 00s films cos he was definitely not wealthy at the time. Although he closed the shop and was not seen again shortly after the films were released. Mordor was indeed imo named after the industrial black country near Birmingham as Vois says at the start of the podcast. Tolkien could see the smoke and pollution coming from our area from Miles away. The industrial worker's covered in dirt and coal (the reason we're called the black country)were the inspiration for Orcs

Rings of Power is a kids’ show title. Quote the ring poem, and call it “In the darkness, bind them”. THAT’S a kickass adult horror title.

I’ve watched this a few times. I’m so happy with nostalgic banter about my favorite thing. And Voxis is so much cheekier than I thought he would be when he first came in :) I hope to see way more of you two together. Reminds me of Patrick Stewart when I first saw him as deputy director bullock. It’s a crime how he gets on nowadays.

This trilogy was nothing short of a miracle. Remember seeing Fellowship in one of those mini 'exclusive' expensive theatre, the seat was like £20, you were sitting in a giant lazy-chair with a subwoofer under it, and could get yourself a beer. Then the DVD, with IIRC six hours of mind-blowing extras. I have the three special editions, with the miniatures.

"there are fielllds Drinker.. endless fields!" not gonna lie that murdered me 😂😂😂 regarding the actors like Willis taking a paycheck for utter tripe... my wife mentioned she read an article that if these guys aren't in some film within a number of years certain perks like home cinema (yknow.. rich peoples home cinema where they see the latest stuff at home prior to us knuckleheads)... and even private medical health care is actually taken from them. So they just need to turn up in some film and they can say "look i'm relevant" its kind of pitiful if this is indeed the case and you see/know how much they've earned on various films over the years.
