When this came out, everyone was expecting another Aliens, and it wasn't even another Alien; I remember the disappointment as I sit in the cinema. There is a special edition, which was put together using Fincher's original notes and script, and which he himself, approved of (though he wasn't involved in it, himself). I've seen it, and it is a huge improvement on the the theatrical version. If you're going to watch Alien 3 I recommend the special edition.

“Alien 3” is definitely the most dour and depressing film of the entire franchise. It is definitely not as good as the first two, but it is still better than every other “Alien” film that came afterwards, in my opinion. The best part of the movie, for me, was the soundtrack. Elliot Goldenthal’s music really put the stamp on the tone and atmosphere of the film, emphasizing its overall fatalistic sense of impending doom. The final track, “Adagio” does give us the sense of ultimate victory and the relief that comes with it, but it is tempered with the sadness that came from Ripley’s ultimate sacrifice. Goldenthal did an absolutely incredible job scoring this film.

I dont know, Alien 3 always bores me to death and is like you said super depressing, so as shitty as Alien 4 is i prefer wacthing it over 3 any day. But i still hoped we would get another good Alien Movie like 1+2 after that, sadly it got even worse. This sounds strange but I think Alien3 would have been widely accepted if it had been the sequel to the first Alien. The problem with Alien3 is that it followed Aliens. In that movie Ripley got a happy ending and we liked that. But Alien3 kicks us in the nuts at the very start by killing off Hicks and Newt.

Not necessarily strange because it's a tone thing of what people expect. Alien was a certain kind of movie, Aliens then changed that tone to different direction probably losing fans of the first, but also gaining new fans in process. After Aliens many people surely expected something similar with the next movie (more action like before), but it was quite different. But also that thing you said about killing Hicks and Newt off screen nullifying the conclusion of previous movie, that is always a bit crappy thing to do. Btw, between the book/movie etc. character you were expecting/liked happened to died away because plot conveniences, too bad.

26:06 the Alien 3 xeno *wasn't* CGI (with the exception of the shot where it explodes after the lead bath), it was a *rod puppet* - they just integrated the puppet _really_ poorly into the live action footage, with awful edge masks The raw puppet footage they shot actually looked *incredible* - highly recommend people check out BTS videos of the production to see the raws Also; was very happy to hear the Earth Hive/Nightmare Asylum/Female War novels come up in this discussion... anyone who read them (or the Comic versions) knows this is the direction the cinematic universe should've taken.. props guys, fantastic stream ❤❤❤

I'm glad you brought this up (what was actually CGI). Reviewers often say things like "the practical effects are great FOR THEIR TIME" about other movies, but somehow Alien3 doesn't get a pass. I understand what people are talking about when they criticize the sfx, but I think they forget what the Alien3 makers were creating compared to the previous two movies and the praise heaped upon their sfx (and, for the record, I love those movies even more than Alien3). Alien had no full body shots of the alien that didn't look like a person in a suit and it was always slow moving. Aliens had only snippets and flashes of fast moving and highly-articulated aliens; in fact, the short cuts often probably gave the impression of fast movement instead of it really happening. Alien3, with the puppets, gave us long shots of the Alien doing things unseen before and nearly impossible to Cameron (much less Scott). I say, if you like Alien3, give it pass on the technical limitations (or even incompetence, if you're right about the edge masks), and enjoy and admire what was improved and accomplished. Watch the Special Edition, of course. What really made me appreciate Alien3 was getting a long-legged puppy. I saw her run and lope and it immediately reminded me of Alien3, esp right after the bursting out of the cow/dog. The puppeteers really captured what a real animal of that shape might look like running. IMO, it goes without saying.

@@alan74453 Thanks. Yeah, this was a huge example of studio interference. A thousand and one ideas in development, screenplay by committee, and horrible editing after primary photography was completed (resulting in many of the inconsistencies and plotholes and "missing characters" the guys mention), overbudget, out of time (resulting in ome of the bad effects) and I think the director had a borderline nervous breakdown trying to get this across the finish line.

Love or hate the movie, turn the lights out and put on the soundtrack with good headphones and just bathe in the atmosphere, horror and sadness and "fallen angel" etheric beauty. I know a lot of my friends hated it straight off the bat because of what happened to Hicks and Newt. I get it, but also these Alien movies are supposed to b e kind of hopeless. Like Ash says in the first one ... "You have my pity." By the time the xenomorph makes its appearance, your time has already run out. The full cut is admittedly a little long, but addresses a lot of the issues. Maybe someone has a fan edit where the short version's "dog xenomorph" is still in it, but they have the middle section where the insane character actually gets out of the infirmary and releases "the Dragon" from the toxic waste bunker. That would probably be the best version IMHO.

I quite like this movie! Sure, it doesn't compare to the previous two, but I'll take it over what came after any day. I still have yet to see the most recent cut of the movie, and would love to see what was originally planned for the story. I would've made some different choices, particularly with Newt and Hicks, but I don't hate what we got.

Alien3 is the third best Alien film, much better than 4 and fifty times better than all the cash-in assaults on the franchise that have come since (Prometheus, Covenant, vs Predator, etc). It's the darkest and most grittily realistic of them all, and Weaver and Dance are pitch perfect in it. Ripley's death scene is one of the greatest in cinema, and a fitting end to her hero's story arc.

I love Alien 3, and while I like Aliens, I don't like it nearly as much as most people. That said, they really should have found a way of starting 3 without killing off the characters of the preceding movie. Really, that was the only thing I didn't like about 3.

@@ressljs i saw Aliens when I was little and maaaaan, it blew my mind. I was hooked. I was about 8. Loved it! It has a special place in my memories that does. I then had to watch the others. Alien3 I must admit, it isn't a total catastrophe all considered. My older sister was a massive fan of it tbf so I ended up having to watch it quite alot. lol... heck it beat mary poppins for the umpteenth time (that mary poppins video tape got worn down to just static noise before the end she played it so much 🤣). Though I did feel while Alien3 had some problems (background noise being too loud is one of my biggest pet peeves beyond them killing the characters and that is a major one), I did like its grit and atmosphere overall. Then came Ressurection later on. Surprisingly lmao.... since it knew exactly what it was and didn't take itself seriously in the slightest, I was able to actually enjoy that too - "A beautiful butterfly!", and who could forget the classic "What's inside me?..... *they keep talking between each other* what's inside me?..... *more talking between each other*.... WHATS IN FING SIDE ME!!!!!!?" 🤣🤣🤣. Although I will admit, I did have to watch that one a couple of times with a considerable duration between the viewings because I absolutely loathed it when I first heard of it and stuck it on. Good grief.

@@MrJC1 Yeah, Resurrection had some stuff I absolutely loved, including the "What's f-ing inside me?! And I also thought it was interesting that they made a movie where everyone is absolutely awful. I felt bad for characters being killed in other Alien films, but in Resurrection, I was cheering on the aliens, "Yes! Kill them all!" I told one of my friends that and he responded that the crew of the Betty were the good guys. To which I said, "They kidnap people and sell them to secret military bases for experiments... And you think they're the good guys?!" I also liked bizarro Ripley. But for everything the movie did right, there was something REALLY DUMB.

@@Ithoughtthiswasamerica That, along with the scene where someone shoots a gun in the gym, and it ricochets 10 times before hitting one of the "bad guys" in the head is pretty standard for the director of Resurrection. But most of his movies are surrealistic fantasies where that sort of thing fits with the overall ridiculousness. It didn't work in an Alien film and I have no idea how the studio thought this guy was a good choice for this franchise. I like the directors other movies but serious scifi is not his thing. Just for reference, the movie he made just before Resurrection included the following characters: Seven narcoleptic clones, a talking disembodied brain in a fish tank, a crazy scientist that stole children's dreams and Ron Perlman cast as a retard.

I remember how excited I was for Alien 3. Then in the intro, having an Alien egg on board made me go, "What?! No way I believe some Alien egg is on the ship." Then they killed Newt and Hicks and from that moment on, the movie was dead to me.

I would like to see Fincher's version. I reckon if Fox wasn't financially banking on this movie like it was. We would have seen his vision on the screen. Fincher was also going to the horror elements seen in Scott's version. Cameron made a action movie which in general people are more accepting of. Horror is like dark chocolate some people like some people don't. Action movies are like popcorn they are more widely accepted by everyone.

Gonna nerd out here, strap in: So the mist surrounding the eggs isn't just an environment for the eggs themselves (keeps them in stasis for ad long as 100 years after being laid) but it also detects anything within it. That's why you see in one and two when someone "trips the sensor" the mist clears out (it actually goes into the eggs, waking them up). It reads the biometrics of whatever disrupted it and basically programs the facehugger specifically for that creature. I E. The facehugger will ONLY go after that creature or one like it. The facehugger can actually simulate, perfectly, the hosts natural environment. There is a comic where someone survived floating in space cause the facehugger fed him nutrients, oxygen and even kept his body temp up. They don't actually lay eggs, per say. It's actually this weird hodge podge of nutrients, amino acids, etc. Until the parasite forms it is, for all intents and purposes, cancer. Vigorous cancer. They face hugger constantly injects an enzyme that counteracts it. That's why removing them kills the host, quickly might I add. They basically "melt" from the inside out. It's also why the Xeno takes on characteristics of the host. The facehugger was pre-progammed specifically for that host. They do this to insure the Xeno has whatever it needs to survive in the hosts environment. Anyway...that's all I've got for today. Go away now! XD

The only true CGI shot in the movie is the shot at the end when the alien comes out of the lead, they poor water on him. The head dome cracks. That's the CG shot in the movie. The dodgy shots on the ceiling and when it crawls up to Ripley in the medbay are puppets digitally put into the shot. It looks like bad CGI but it's actually bad puppet and digital work.

I liked the scenes in Resurrection about the colonist pods being hijacked and the colonists waking up to the flowering eggs. The horror of imagining yourself waking up in that situation, not knowing where you are, unable to free yourself, and then catching a face hugger shortly after. I think the movie could have been edited down to a five minute short.

There was a deleted scene that was in the book that is sometimes on the DVD. Where they set up robotic guns in 2 tunnels that killed many aliens before they run out of ammo.

This movie failed from the start because they killed off the two characters from Aliens (Hicks and Newt) that we loved just as much as we loved Ripley. The cast was good but the writing was trash. The story was just superbad.

Eh, I liked the idea of being stuck in a place without weapons and having to figure out how to defeat a single Alien bringing back the horror and isolation of the first movie. The problem was the execution, it wasn't the idea from the start. Newt and Hicks could've sticked around in this plot. Also, the writing is still a million times better than all the Alien and AVP films that followed.

@@DeepEye1994 They didn't know where to go with the story or how to segue from Aliens, so they killed off central characters and tried to mitigate for this steaming pile of dung with quick cuts and bad CGI rather than good storytelling. This and all the 'Alien' franchise movies after it were just plain, unadulterated BS. I couldn't in good conscience compare this movie to 'Alien' the original. The first movie was cinema perfection. Everything about it was flawless. It was so good that every space alien movie and TV show after it was simply a copy. Alien 3 ruined the franchise.

The Assembly Cut is absolutely just a longer version of the theatrical release. It does resolve what happened to Golic (though not the plot hole that the entire film needs to exist, in order to justify its existence), but other than that, it adds scenes that are just slightly different, longer, or worse versions of what was already in the original. When I finally saw the "cut" from the Quadrilogy set, I didn't get what people were on about, saying how much different or 'better' it made the film (it didn't).

I always figured Ripley was pregnant from the incident in the med bay in aliens, I kind of assumed a queen took longer to chestate than the alien dog hybrid. I don't think the queen in ripley was ready to hatch yet, but it realized it would die in the molten lead and decided to birth itself prematurely.

H.R. Giger made the Alien franchise all that it is. All of the creatures, the aliens, the xenomorphs, the set design of the Alien ship, the jockey, the hive. I can't imagine any other creator making the world of Alien so iconic, so emotionally impactful. The visuals alone were absolutely terrifying! You knew when you saw any imagery like that it was either the Allen's franchise, or an H.R. Giger project of some sort! Back in the days when the story, the visuals, the dialogue all followed the source material, and the story was the priority. Not check boxes, casting quotas, and adjustments for modern day audiences. I'm absolutely ready for this wave of Hollywood to go far far away!

2:20:30 - there were facehuggers in Medical, not eggs. Dropships take 50 minutes' flight time to get from the Sulaco down to Hadley's Hope. And when Ripley went after Newt, the countdown was 11 minutes when she got on the elevator to go down. No way could Bishop have: * drugged Hicks * flown to the derelict * landed * exited the dropship * found a way into the derelict * found his way to the egg chamber * grabbed an egg (or two) * climbed back out * gotten back to the dropship * climbed aboard * hidden the egg where the humans wouldn't find it * hidden the egg where the humans wouldn't trigger it * taken off * flown back in time to save Ripley Even if he'd just flown to the bottom of the station and gone in on foot (somehow avoiding Ripley) and grabbed an egg from the Hive, he got torn in half as soon as he stepped out of the dropship! The egg cannot possibly have been in the hallway where they showed it! The whole movie is just Ripley's nightmare!

I would think the respiration mechanism on the face-hugger would just be pumping whatever the atmosphere happens to be. Taking the air around it and pumping that, because it's a logical assumption that you encounter a species in its own native atmosphere.

I always assumes they sent in the dud lieutenant with the marines in Aliens because the company wanted someone who wasn't confident enough to act on their own initiative, who'd always defer to authority so Burke could take over when things went tits up. But they weren't expecting Ripley to be so assertive and such a natural leader that she'd be the one to end up taking control of the situation instead.
