One of the huge problem's with ROP is that it corporealises (is that even a word??) EVERYTHING. They simply don't understand the quasi-spiritual realm behind Tolkien's work; the magic is subtle, the power of the strong character's is often in their sheer willpower, etc. Sauron's blood in the rings? It's not a physical property that is infused into the rings! It's his will to dominate. But then, if they are so damned imbecilic that they think trebuchet's can bombard a mountain and dam a river, then all bets are off. The show is sewage.

2:11:45 This sounds like something I picked up reading a critique of Robert Heinlein's attitude to the armed forces. Heinlein was a navy man and the navy emphasises all that's great about patriotism. The critic had been an infantryman in Vietnam and all he'd ever heard was "go out and kill the enemy and when it's all over go home and be shit on by your neighbours for being a warmonger". Heinlein actually addressed this in Glory Road where he says you can't tell a generation of young people that patriotism is crap and then expect them to get excited when they get a letter from the draft board telling them their country needs them.

I think it's hilarious that in the overhead establishing shots of the Eregion city (Eregion is a region in the proper canon, not a specific city, but whatever) that we got in RoP season 1, the city has no walls or fortifications whatsoever. It's just a riverbank with several little landings that led into the city. But then, mere weeks later in the show's messed-up timeline, the city suddenly has a huge wall of towers and parapets that presents an obstacle for the orc army for plot reasons. But it also has a "thinnest part," somehow? What kind of designer builds a defensive wall that has randomly uneven thickness? This is a comparatively small issue on the scale of cosmological all-encompassing lore-mutilating garbage that consumes the rest of the show, but it's still worth pointing out for how directly it's involved in the plot for episode 7.

Also, what does MauLer mean that villains such as Mr. Freeze & Poison Ivy are goofy (almost as tho Batman & Robin is his only frame of reference for them, except he has played the Ist II Arkham games, so did he think they were goofy in those games?). Goofy, compared to what exactly, to The Batman, mean suppose so, considering how insanely grounded & grungey that universe is, but personally wouldn't describe those villains in particular as goofy, if MauLer wants goofy Batman villains, would suggest Polka-Dot Man (tho he at least managed to be taken a bit more seriously lately) Kite-Man or Zebra-Man. I don't get why people do not realize or can accept that yes, we can do stories set in Gotham without involving Batman. Keep in mind he has only been active for like a few years, he is a rookie still, and he won't investigate every crime. If the big criminal houses have a showdown he will likely just let them sort things out between themselves. And Penguin's whole deal in the comics is that he often is "the devil you know." Batman might beat him up for information, but he lets him operate because otherwise someone worse would take his place. Both the Gotham show and Penguin proves that a Gotham city without Batman is still very interesting.

Agreed, and doubly so that she doesn't seem to have understood a word he was saying. He was responding to Drinker saying how he despises the thought of a writer's room as opposed to working solo. Disparu then went on to describe how men tend to prefer to work alone while women tend to prefer to work in groups, which makes sense given how social we (women) are on average. And that those preferences and their life experiences as men versus women not only inform how they write, but can make them better suited to different projects. Somehow, Jay took that to mean, "Women don't belong in the writer's room," which is how she summed up his argument in her video: "This might cause some people to question whether or not women should be part of a writer's room. I recently heard an argument like this and I almost threw up in my mouth." The "this" she's referring to were examples she gave of poorly-written shows written by women, like The Acolyte and She-Hulk. Yet another way in which she was fundamentally not getting the argument. Drinker never said anything about women writing shitty shows. He said too many cooks in the kitchen makes it too difficult to write a good, coherent story because you're having to juggle everyone's nonsense opinions, agendas, etc. So the writer who had a clear vision is now stuck muddying the waters by incorporating everyone's feedback. You can see Jay's expression change and her brow raise when Disparu replies to Drinker, saying that's actually a gendered difference in how men and women prefer to work. She thinks that because she may actually prefer to work solo, that Disparu is just talking out of his ass - and he's not. Maybe if she actually bothered to at least pretend to be interested in their conversation and engage in a way that's more significant than just "Here's my surface-level commentary that you can find countless variations of from other people on X," she would've been listening and comprehending better. Or maybe not. In all honesty, she's felt a bit off to me in these discussions. I'd never heard of her before I saw her first Open Bar appearance and at first I actually liked her. Then I got really disinterested in her quickly when I realized she doesn't necessarily have interesting, engaging, or unique insights and comes across as phoning it in. There was nothing stopping her from challenging Disparu on his POV and having a civil debate like an adult. Not particularly interested in seeing her return to the panel. Even if she brought more to the table, knowing that this is how she handles differences of opinions with people who are supposed to be friends (or at least friendly) is pretty distasteful.

I haven't watched the show but I think Sauron putting the blame on Morgoth and the things that he's done and that he was abused and such fits well with his manipulative state at that point in time. He tells lies so that people can give him benefits of doubt in order to deceive them and get what he wants. It's what makes him a villain.

You guys really need to watch Sugar, it is also Colin Farrel and he is awesome in that show. Basically a bit film noir private eye story with sci fi elements.

One thing I really enjoy about Korean films is that they don't have hangups about including characters that are Christians. In Hollywood, anyone who quotes scripture is either a villain or a moron. Seeing a guy quote scripture and be just a regular guy was almost startling, but also so refreshing. (I am not interested in arguing religion, just talking about characters.)

14:40 Diparu is right. That was Falcone's whole arc in _The Long Halloween._ Gotham had been run by gangsters for so long and now he was frustrated that he was forced to deal with all the new costumed lunatics that were pushing in.

I don’t know if either is considered a strict drama rather than a dramedy or comedy, but the films I know Katherine Hahn from are This Is Where I Leave You and Glass Onion. At the time of watching them, I thought both films were good, and Hahn’s performances were good - but I haven’t rewatched them in a while, so I can’t say with confidence that I still stand behind those opinions.
@4203105Ай бұрын
Glass onion isn't a good film, but that's got nothing to do with the actors, who are all excellent. It's just a really bad murder mystery and the script has quite a few other faults too.

I've been reading the Ascension Factor, the last book Frank Herbert wrote before he died. His co-author had to do much of the writing (not great) and its still better than anything now. In fact, it's clear that The 5th Element and Avatar took inspiration from it.

Probably unpopular opinion - the whole idea behind Agatha is not bad. But there's no reason to make it a Marvel show. Just do a show about witches, make them go to a journey, aim it towards adults, make it like Supernatural (so basically on crack), and it could work very well. But now, when they are limited by the Marvel universe (In theory), and tried to force it... It doesn't work, because it couldn't work.
