I think the point wasn’t is the coop traditional or not, but does it let chickens live life they need and deserve. Every species have they needs for their welfare. And I like to think that people are willing to do their best and really find information. I know you feel hurt, but with the animals comes responsibilities for them and it is your job to really find out what does good life for them mean. You can do better. We all learn if we are willing to.

I, too, was very concerned for the welfare of the chickens from the previous video and decided to think on it first rather than shooting off a comment. I've never bothered to comment on someone's video before, but this really stood out to me. Then the defensive tone of this follow-up video didn't alleviate concern. It's partly summed up by the comment that it's just nature if a predator kills them. This isn't true; there's nothing natural about chickens as we have bred them to be or the way we must keep them in order to benefit from their eggs. Humans have manipulated the "natural" food chain, so to suggest a fox in a small cage full of chickens is natural misses the point. Further, any animal we take into our care *should be cared for to the utmost* to have anything resembling a commensal (at worst) or mutually beneficial (at best) relationship. It's not in any animal's interest to be far away from the family caring for them, and no one is wrong or ill-intentioned for pointing that out. And as someone who's been deeply entrenched in farm life, veterinary care, and animal rescue my whole life, I've never known great animal carers to think about keeping any species out of sight for safety, much less out of range to have a genuine relationship with the animals (even chickens are capable of true affection for their people). ****Being close and hands-on with them all the time is the only way you can even catch common deadly and extremely painful emergencies with their health such as being eggbound or having impacted crops.**** Tradition vs Justin Rhodes' marketing is not at all the issue, either, and viewers should be given credit for being more intelligent than that-please don't reduce the actual experience of others down to generalizations or defensive assumptions. Defensiveness warps things. It isn't humble or honest. It doesn't result in improvement. It certainly doesn't equate to a pleasant viewing experience. I'm unsubscribing, though, I do genuinely wish the best for your family and the creatures who depend on you.

Wow, this comment is phenomenal. I too was appalled by her comment that it is just nature if they get killed. So if you put your dog out to go wee, it is just nature if a larger predator grabs it for dinner? I saw her in a new light after the two chicken videos. And I did not like what I saw, I saw a narcissist for one and I really dislike those with that personality type.

Such an excellent and well expressed reply. I, having had hens for decades, tried to advise when I saw the first vid - as many others also did. Some people are just totally unsuited to keeping animals and I think her comments today show patently that she is one of them. She seems to see them as entertainment fpr her rather than seeing the responsibility she now has for sentient beings. I dread to think how they suffered and fared in the storm last weekend.

I truly believe that most was constructive suggestion. You'll figure a lot of things out as you go along and actually have to confront things, make the decisions as they come up. You can't blame Justin Rhodes. When you make a coop it needs to be big enough, with perches and of a suitable material, not see through plastic sheeting. Justin always kept his chickens close to his home, It's only when he has them with the cattle that they are further away. Sgarden and place the chickens there for the time being.

@@katealison6087 the hens are kept away from the house, next to a field with sheep. In a house without a secure lock. The fence can short out, there are many predators out there. Foxes and worse mink, buzzards and eagles. I live on the west coast and have kept chickens, ducks, goats ... The closer to the home, the easier. If you want to follow someone like Justin Rhodes that's wonderful but follow his plans. They are available online. Do you know how wet it has been here over the past few months? The ground is sopping it's very wet. The chickens are not going to thrive there. I'm only trying to avoid disappointment and death

@@katealison6087 🍔🍟🥤In this vid Cori states a neighbor's hen house was recently broken into by a fox and in the comments (previous vid) she states a fox was just next to their home, she also states there are birds of prey flying overhead as she is filming; it would be absolutely ignorant to assume she is in the clear given that intel in addition to the fact that she has put them in a readily accessible drive thru takeaway for local wildlife with transparent walls for easy identification of what's for supper. Applying common sense is not rude, rather it is using deductive reasoning and examining the odds. I don't feel it is a funny situation at all, unlike you. All those expressing valid concerns were deemed rude, I'd say lack of concern for sentient beings in one's care is rude.

I was just going to comment on all the beautiful Blackthorn blossom(after video) when you asked about it. Yes,thats Blackthorn - Prunus spinosa -be careful ive been told the spikes have a bacteria in or on them that can introduce Sepsis into the bloodstream, but as youve foraged before your probably ok about that. You must pick, pick, pick blackberries. Boil them, strain off the juice and store it all in a freezer to enjoy summer sunshine through winter. Its like concentrate. You can add water or lemonade,or even a spot of alcohol. Its good how youre taking the advice, considering,+ assessing. When you said its so handy to have a lamb here at Easter, sorry my first thought was -lunch!Poor thing ,3 days away from its Mum. It mustve been hungry when it got back. Youre fitting in well with your neighbours anyway. God bless your endeavours

I found Storey’s Guide To Raising Chickens very useful when I first started. I live in the mountains of NY. It is predator heaven out here. I heard the girls having a fit just yesterday, ran out and found a Red Tailed Hawk sitting on the roof of the coop wishing she could find a way into the run. My run is covered with wire, so she didn’t have time to figure out a way in before I heard the ruckus and came out to run her off. Same happened recently with a fox who was trying to find its way in. Thus, I suggest a covered run if possible. No set up is completely predator proof. My neighbor’s coop was smashed into by a bear that recently came out of hibernation. You do your best and hope it is enough. Best of luck from someone also living her dream life.

Smashed by a bear? Yikes! Fortunately none of those around here! Really appreciate that book recommendation, I'm going to see if I can get that. Yeah our hens were making a ruckus last week and we found out there was a fox in the field just sunning himself and eyeing up their run, sneaky so-and-so. Fortunately we scared him off (for now at least). Yeah I think a covered run could be a smart suggestion.
