Experiment at different distances to determine what distance is easiest for you. Your tomahawk may get a bit banged up at first. I love my Chogan (and Cold Steel Rifleman) hawk, but I personally find it a bit too heavy for throwing. I have a pair of Cold Steel Trail Hawks and 3 SOG Fasthawks that I prefer. Still, it's a good skill to hone, if for nothing else than getting outside and de-stressing. Thanks for the upload!

My first tomahawk throw was my new Woods Chogan. My first throw stuck perfect. So I started from that distance which I think was 19'. I sanded off the slick finish, hitched on Constrictor Knots for powerful grip stations that look way cool too, and keep it rubbed in mineral oil. I've learned the only way to make the handles last when throwing regularly, is to prevent the bit head from moving. That's impossible perhaps with hard heel strikes of the handle if mistakes are made in practicing various throws. Even mighty Constrictor knots drawn in against each other might not make it through a lot of those mistakes with such heavy bit. Even Hickory handle's will splinter and crack from such. So its best not to make that mistake, and go with lots of skillfully applied constrictors in the correct material and sized cord. Tarred nylon. Bankline. Gives me so much power and control of this heavy hawk, I can whip chop 2 powerful strikes per second side through thick branches. I always know exactly how to hold it to throw, without ever looking at it or thinking about it.
