I travel for a living and often find myself in places where most self-defense tools are illegal. Ironically but not surprisingly, these same places are often the places you are most likely to need them. Any option that is 50 state legal is a good option. It is, after all, all about having options.

I like that it doesn’t look like a weapon. I feel like if I’m gonna rely on my pen, it’s because I’m somewhere non-permissive. If my pen gets flagged right away, then it does me no good. Plus I want a comfortable pen I can just keep on my desk. This seems like it “checks a lot of boxes” for me.

I looked through a lot of tactical pens and have settled on this because of its look. Most of the others out there could immediately cause a "what's this" reaction, which is exactly what I am trying to avoid. It's bizarre to me that this seems to be the only product out there that addresses this issue. The idea of havin "Smith and Wesson" emblazoned on your tactical pen is completely nuts IMO.

Great vid. I want one. Seems like a great little device to keep handy as a backup to one's backup-backup weapon. And I love that it is completely unobtrusive and does not remotely look threatening, especially with the tip concealed in a pocket, etc. Looks like an ordinary pen. For those not untrained in martial arts - like me - almost any implement is more effective than an empty hand. I once took out a gang of 14 angry midget street toughs with a nail clipper. I don't know why they were angry.

I have a lot of respect for James Williams so I got this pen. I really like it, it fits my hand well but is a tad too long for most of my pant and shirt pockets but like I said, it fits my hand well and it needs to be slightly large for it to work for its intended purpose. Plus it's not near as expensive as other "tactical" pens so when I lose it I won't be that upset. :). Nice review LBS.

I liked the first fisher space pen that was a retractable pen in stainless but they had a weak retract system the wouldn't take abuse. After all the moon astronauts wouldn't abuse any thing. While the ink cartridge is built like a brick out house. sounds like a good product to me I may buy one in the near future.

has anyone stress tested this pen? I have hit pieces of metal and wood with my Tuff Writer pens and not a scratch on either side, the point or the round end. I'm looking to see if this pen can handle the same.

Is this pen illegal to carry onto a school campus in hawaii? I just feel that the lack of objects that i could defend myself on a campus makes me feel insecure and i also want a pen that kicks ass.

I've been searching for a tac pen a while. I wouldn't mind one of the benchmade pens, but they are just too pricey... I think this seems to be in a good price range for me. It looks to be better than the S&W pens. I hate having nothing when I travel, and I think this would be perfect.

Employ and deploy mean two completely different things, Mr. Gordon. The definitions you're quoting are not exactly the correct ones (a word can have several different definitions) but when it comes to a weapon, they couldn't differ more.

an asp to an untrained person is probably going to be useless unless the your attacker lacks the common sense to close the distance (Instantly making the asp unefective). with a knife because you can use it non lethal like you were showing in the video, also not many people are willing to risk their lives over petty every day situations, BUT you never know when you are gonna get into a situation where you need to kill someone before they kill you. so gun above all, but knives are good too.

I don't dig tactical pens. Anything sold as a tactical pen or that "shark" marker from Cold Steel is either conspicuous as hell or a steel barreled pen sold at a 300% markup. Go to staples, pick out a nice steel barreled pen (Zebra and Parker spring to mind), you'll have a nice pen that A) costs less than $10, B) won't draw any attention beyond "nice pen, man" and C) will still stand up to being forced through someone's temporal bone. It's the modern equivalent of a cane sword.

Pens are used as weapons because it's illegal to use actual weapons (guns, knives, etc.) and illegal to conceal weapons in some countries. As soon as you make a pen TACTICAL or a flashlight TACTICAL, it becomes a weapon. The cops aren't going to look at your black, metal, pointy pen or your flashlight with a strike bezel and be like "gee, that doesn't look like a weapon to me. I guess you're of the hook." There are cases of tac pens being taken during airport checks cause they think they're weap

I'm too young to carry a firearm, so yes, I carry a big knife, with the little training I have. Most common crimminals looking for an unarmed person will run away if a knife/gun/pepper spray/baton it presented. If the presentation of my knife is ineffective, I'm dropping it and using my bare hands because I have more training in that. Pepper spray is technically legal, but I've found that not all cops agree with that, but unless I'm committing a crime, I can't be arrested for the knife.

I know that I’m replying to another reply that’s 3 years old, and it’s in response to a 7 year old post, but it’s a great point, and I’d like to elaborate on it a little. All I could think when I read the op’s original comment is that if you’re going to drop the knife, you definitely shouldn’t be carrying it. It’s a great way to get hurt or killed with your own weapon. Only carry a weapon if you feel that you need to (keyword NEED), and make sure that you’re ready, willing, and able to use it if it comes to that. And, never brandish anything as a way of “scaring” someone. That’s a crime in and of itself, and it can cause the situation to escalate all with you as the aggressor (unless they first pull out a weapon). Only grab your weapon if you have to use it right then and there. And, make sure that it’s your absolute last resort. Try to avoid and / or de-escalate the situation in every way you can. If all else fails and the other party has any kind of weapon and is an immediate threat to the safety and well being of yourself and / or others, that’s when you use your weapon. And again, if you’re not completely ready, willing, and able to use a weapon, definitely don’t carry one.
