You're correct. 98% of people wont and will never know.. it's a really good fake.. and most people wear the fake ones due to the styling and shear looks of the watches.. There are no average joe products with the stylings. Only 3 brands i can think of right off the type that are every day working man affordable. Invicta divers, victorinox, and seiko( especially with the jubilee ). Other than that, not much out there..

The low and mid range replicas can be spotted for their subtle differences and by weight as you so excellently describe here. There are now factories in China producing what the industry calls "AAA fakes". These are true one-to-one replicas. Sometimes they even use a Swiss movement or a fine grade SCM ebauche from a Chinese manufacturer that has a brand I dare not mention here (being cryptic here for obvious reasons). They will use gold if the original uses gold...but they will use 7 karat instead of 10 or 18 karat gold. The lens will be sapphire or hardlex as in the original and they are almost impossible to tell apart from the originals unless the movement is clearly a upmarket SCM. If they use a Swiss movement then I defy anyone outside of the original factory to pick them as fakes. Even the weight will be the same to within a few grams which a watchmaker would put down to individual construction differences. I know a gentleman who had his real branded watch repaired using parts from a AAA fake and the parts were interchangeable. So the Chinese are getting so good at this fake business that they have the Swiss worried. Heck, the Chinese are even copying Casio and Seiko watches...there is no end to their fake industry!

The question is do you pay 20K more for the feeling you get wearing the real one. The key to buying a good 1:1 replica is to get one that is simple in design with less complications i.e. white or black dials, not gold, close case back, non tourbillon etc. This AP passes the eye test from a distance but up close I noticed the lack of sharpness of the AP logo and the date window magnification quality is lacking which made it easy for me.

Another good tell, which isn't easy to check, is that the crystal is plain glass instead of sapphire. Most pawn shops and jewellers have an ultrasonic device which instantly spots the fakes...might be useful to know?

@HansHerman1 9 out of 10 people don't keep up with designer items. Because your average Joe can't afford them. How many times have you heard a guy say to someone, do you know how much this cost? And then they have to explain to people the brand and how much it cost. People are clueless about designer stuff. I like the way the watches look. It's not showing off to me if I buy a replica.
