Is there a finishing stitch for the top of the shawl as well? I was thinking of doing so, but not sure what stitch to do, any suggestions?

I was wondering about that. too. Trying to imagine what would blend well and be comfortable on the neck?
@HookedbyRobin
@HookedbyRobin 5 жыл бұрын
I personally will be leaving mine raw as I don't like having lots of extra fabric up around my neck but you could easily do something simple if you wanted a more finished look - perhaps you could do a row of single crochet (popping maybe 4 or 5 single crochets in each chain space, or however many keeps your tension looking neat - too many stitches will cause it to ruffle) OR you could be even more fancy and pop a picot in (chain 3 then slip stitch to the first chain you did) to create a little loop? 🙂

I just finished making this shawl as my first "big" project and I am in love! I used a heavier, 6 bulky wool blend yarn in color changing greens in just shy of 270 yards and am calling it my "swamp shawl" and it came out absolutely amazing! I am just learning to crochet and your videos have been crucial in my journey, you're awesomely inspiring and a great teacher 🤙🏼☺️ Now I just have to practice to hopefully get as fast as you some day! 😂😂

This shawl is AMAZING!!!! I made it extra large because I just wanted to be totally wrapped up in it. I used a lightweight yarn in Fall colors. Because there are so many 5-chains, instead of counting to five over and over again, I'd name family members, so I'm calling the shawl my Family Fall Shawl. :) It's stunning if I do say so myself. I'll be glad when the summer is over and the weather gets cool again so I can snuggle up in it! :)

Absolutely beautiful pattern, one of my favorites to make. To strengthen the final row and give it a slightly more "finished" look, I added a finishing row. If you care to try it, feel free! Make your shawl to your desired size. After your last row, chain one and turn. Work your initial turning edge stitches as normal. (Slip stitch into the 2nd and 3rd double crochet, then slip stitch into the chain 2 space. Chain 3, then do 2 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet.) Instead of chaining 5 after, I chained 3. Then worked 2 double crochet, chain 1, 2 more double crochet, into the chain 5 space. Single crochet on top of the single crochet from the row below. Then just repeat all the way across. At the end of the last chain 5 space, work your 2 double crochet, chain 1, 2 double crochet. Then chain 3 and work your final edge set. (Into the chain 2 space from below, work your 3 double crochet, chain 2, 3 double crochet.) When complete, tie off, weave in your ends, and voila! A beautiful scalloped top edge on a gorgeous shawl!

I've only made 3 shawls, ever because I'm a beginner so I'm always looking for easy beginner friendly patterns that aren't complicated. Robin, I have made this shawl a few times with DK yarn and love. This last time I used 4 weight yarn, a discontinued Premier yarn called Momenti. On a whim on the last row after then turn at the end of the row I chained 3 did a single crochet chained 3 all the way across. Then I did the end of the row turned around and did 2 singles, 1 half double in the chain 3 space, then 1 half double and 2 single in the next chain 3 space. Then I did 3 singles in each chain 3 space across. At the end I chained 3 did the end of the row came back and did the 2 singles, a half doubles to match the other side. I slipped stitched in the top of the last single from the previous row. OMG!!! I love how it came out. It gave me the straight edge ending I was needing. I hope I have explained this good enough. I have not written this down anywhere but here. I go where the hook leads me. I have not taken pictures since this shawl is a gift. I will eventual post on Instagram. I and will try to remember to tag you. This pattern was posted 5 years ago, I hope you get to see this comment.

@Sherri swift @Hooked by Robin Only since an adult did I ever start hearing women mis-pronouncing it as 'Skeen', and women still are I hardly hear it being pronounced correctly any more except extremely rarely. It ONLY HAS 1 PRONUNCIATION and it is SKANE the English translation of the French word e'cheveau. And NO one cannot just decide it can be pronounced any way one wants to just pronounce it as to just satisfy oneself. As of EVERYTHING in the world, there is only a right way or a wrong way TO, OF EVERYTHING. People just like to claim there are 'gray; areas to justify their means.

This is so beautiful, but there is no way, nope, none, that I could use such a fine yarn, beautiful as this is. I’m hoping that if I use a 3 weight, or what Ice Yarns, for example, suggest is a 4 weight, with a larger than recommended hook, I can make a pretty shawl. I’m a big person, so there might be a little optical illusion going my way! 🙂

Hey Robin - thanks for this and many other excellent videos. I think you should bring Steve in rather than worrying about taking her out (editing or literally kicking her out). Cats are top of the pops on the internet don't you know (yes of course you do). I am a relative beginner (male over 60) after having been taught by mother and grandmother to knit, crochet and sew as a young boy, so it has been a major gap between then and now. I'd love to see more tutorials where people feature themselves and their animals, children, partners etc even if it's just for a couple of minutes because I think it makes for a much less anonymous feel. I am trying to get my wife to agree to being filmed doing ceramics tutorials as I am the techie half of the relationship. Thanks again. Lee.

It's almost like you are doing the edging or border at the same time you are doing the shawl the way it works out. Lovely shawl. Thank you Robin.

Steve is a welcome sound… i must say this seams an easy pattern… and beautiful… but the temptation is there for me to weave another color through the holes and make a tassel past the beautiful edging to add to it and not detract from it… lol… i of course blame this urge to weave it on one of your other videos where you do just that… now everything i see with holes must be woven… hahaha… lol… love your videos to infinity… so pleasant and relaxing even if someone else is doing the work… thank you

Thanks so much for the video. I will be trying this one with Sweetroll. Also attempting to hold my yarn like you did with your left hand. Simple adjustment but I think it will take a lot of stress off of my wrist. Hand cramps are the worst. Many thanks.

@Steph Fenimore Yes we do, THOUGH EVERYONE, is supposed to as it is a FRENCH WORD AND IT IS ACTUALLY AS 'SKANE'. There IS NO OTHER pronunciation as most people think it is just how each person prefers to say. I have always since long before school age, early 1960s knew it is as 'Skane'. Only as an adult, I started hearing lots of women mis-pronouncing as 'Skeen', and have not hard anyone saying it correctly anymore at all EXCEPT YOU.
