Hey everyone! I recently found this interesting cast on, Picot Cast On or Picot-Point Chain. I think it's so unique and I diffenitly will be using this on a future project. Let me know what you think of this cast on and if you have or will be trying this out.
Thanks for coming back and watching!
Items Mentioned:
Clover Bamboo Double Pointed Needles size 8 (5mm)
Boye Aluminum Crochet Hook size H (5mm)
Caron Simply Soft Yarn in Grape
Knit to Crochet Equivalent:
It's best to go by metric sizes (mm) when picking the right size to go with your knitting needle. Here are the letter sizing that works with needles.
Hook = Needle
E = 4
F = 5
G = 6
H = 8
I = 9
J = 10
K = 10 1/2
Crochet Cast On Instructions:
Make a slip knot on crochet hook. Hold yarn and knitting needle in left hand and crochet hook in right hand.
With yarn behind needle, go over the needle with hook and grab yarn, pull through slip knot on hook. Also, can see this as working a single crochet over needle.
Take yarn between needle and hook, to the back and repeat. Working a single crochet over needle and draw through loop on hook. Placing yarn between hook and needle to back.
Repeat until one less amount of stitches needed are cast on. Slip remaining stitch on hook, onto needle.

Thank you for such a clear tutorial! I'm about to cast on 170 stitches for a blanket I'm making and I always overestimate for the long-tail method and end up having to waste a ton of yarn. This is a huge help!

As a long time crocheter over 20 years and now a beginner knitter, I do find this a great and easier way to cast on. One, you don’t have to guesstimate for a long tail, 2 the tension is better (for me anyways), 3 the tail is shorter as you say, and 4 it will be faster as well. People don’t understand but at the beginning it might sound odd to cast on this way but I can see the simplicity of how it can get easier and faster. Thank you for a great tutorial, great job!!

I am trying to figure out how to fix a friend’s baby blanket and I was COMPLETELY stumped as to how they ended up with both ends looking like a chain stitch. Just on a whim, I decided to look for “crocheted cast on”...and here you are, saving the day! THANK YOU!!!

Thank for this! I’m a cricketer who is learning knitting for the first time and casting on, esp with long tail, seemed like such a hassle before. Not anymore! Thanks!

It's actually like just doing a chain over the knitting needle. A single crochet would take a bit more to do. Just clarifying that for us crocheters, it could get confused

Thank you for your video. The only hard part for me was at the end you say when you reach the number you want to cast on put the loop from the crochet hook on the needle. This made me have one more cast on than needed. I had to find another tutorial that explained a bit more clearly that when you reached one less than the number you want cast on, put the loop from the hook onto the needle. I hope this feedback helps.

This is my new favorite cast on method. Not only is it easy but it also creates a beautiful edge that matches the cast off and it's very nice and stretchy too. I combine it with selvage edges and the whole piece looks beautiful and professional. Thank you.

I think could become my way of casting on. I hated when I had to redo a large number of cast on stitches because I would run out of yarn. Thanks for this tip! :)

Love this cast on! I’ve always started my larger projects over multiple times due to miscalculating the length of yarn required for the long tail cast on. This will save me a lot of time and frustration.

There is an alternative method that I believe is even easier. Take the equivalent sized crochet hook as the video recommends and make a chain of however many slip stitches you need to cast on. When you have the right number, bind it off. Take your needle, stick it through the first slip stitch. Have the working end of the yarn you will use with a slip knot and place it over the end of the needle. pull through a loop on the needle. Continue in this way until you reach the end of the crochet chain and you have cast on what you need. I use this method to cast on to multiple needles when I want to work in the round, or onto straight needles for a flat project. Very simple and works very well.

I am interested in learning how to use it as an actual provisional cast on row so that I can knit in the other direction. You made a quick mention of how you have another video but I can't find it. Could you include a link on this video.

I crochet left handed and knit right handed. actually, both, so I don’t need to turn my work. If I cast on left handed, how can I start to knit, on the correct side? I’m making a blanket. Will it matter, in the long run?

I really don't understand how this method is easier than the knitting method of casting on stitches which is faster, I don't mean the long tail CO

Do different CO methods have a different stretch, and out look?
@PleasantSeas
@PleasantSeas 9 жыл бұрын
Daphne Wayendowpanicken Yes. The long tail cast on has some stretch. This crochet one is a little tighter, more stiff. and knit or purl cast on are very loose and stretchy.

I am trying to use this method as a start of a neck warmer. At the end of the row, when you are left with a loop, what do you do with the loop before starting the second row, or in this case, round?
@PleasantSeas

Just slip it onto your needle as one of your stitches.
