I love this chess set I'm making it for my Grandson who likes to play chess

Here is an idea: Make it double layered and connect the layers along every edge between the squares and along the outer edges. So you can fill each square with a strong coin-shaped magnet. Put a similar magnet into the base of each chess-piece. Now you can also play with it in the bed or on the beach because uneven surfaces don't cause chaos on the board any more.

Good one... But will it not be disturbing the whole board while you try to pull out a single chess piece?

I think you can also crochet the whoole board in long rows by colorchange inbetween the squares and crochet over the currently kot used yarn to have it in place for the next color-change. So you have less to sew and less rails to save in.
