Hi Christa, I'm Sharon. I live in the Eastern part of the USA. I am an Educational Interpreter for the Deaf. I am also a mom of two adult daughters, and a preacher's wife. I really enjoy many different crafts. My grandma on my mom's side of the family taught me as well to crochet an knit. I did not pursue either while I was growing up. But recently ( a year) attempted to reteach myself how to crochet. I don't read patterns. Not sure if I ever learned to. So tutorials are great right now. My youngest daughter this past year has shown interest and has learned to crochet so easier items. I enjoy your vlogs and tutorials. You have a very sweet and pleasant voice.

Hi Christa. My name is Donna. I'm from the UK, Cumbria just by the Lake District. I'm a mum of two girls, a fur baby Dog, and I've been with my girls dad for over 20 years. I absolutely love crochet, walking and animals. I learned to crochet when my big sister who was only 36, passed away. My heart broke, I was grieving terribly and was like a zombie. After many months of feeling terrible, I wanted to try a distract myself, so I thought of knitting. Even though I could knit I just didn't feel it, so I bought a crochet hook, I went on KZbin and learned to crochet. That was just over 2 years ago, I've crocheted every day since and I absolutely LOVE crochet, yarn and how this hobby has helped my mental health. Anyway that's enough about me. I'm loving your channel, so glad I found it. If you do a Friday evening 6-7pm your time, I would definitely be able to watch you. 😊

The Secret Yarnery I have been attempting the socks from Rohn Strong's book called Step into Crochet. I do not recommend this book. His instructions are too vague and it seems like he is missing stitches and information to make his patterns flow. I am on my second pattern now and I am very frustrated. I've heard Vicki Browns patterns are good. I am going to try those next.

Hi Christa. Thank you for another great video. I am still working on my moms blanket for my sister’s birthday. It has been slow going because it is emotionally taxing when I pick it up. Healing and grief is a process like all things. Anyway watching your videos and chat is helping my enjoy the process and feel like I am crocheting with a nice group of friends. I am going to do the cardi cal because I need to make something for myself. I have only been crocheting since October and everything I have made had been a gift so far. I can’t wait to start I have picked out some lovely yarn ( I have the same crochet book and I pulled it out to help so thanks for the tip).

Thanks for keeping me company while I'm teaching myself how to do corner-to-corner crochet. I needed something to listen to, that didn't require my eyes, since they've been otherwise engaged. :-) I just read about some prehistoric knapped tools found in Kenya, which are supposedly the oldest known tools made by hominids...something like 3.3 million years ago. Between that and feeding giraffes, etc., it sounds like Kenya's an interesting place to visit. I say visit, not live, because people rarely seem to see the sights where they live.

Hiiii!!!! Love the color coding egg idea! One year for Christmas, I placed #'s instead of my children's names on their gifts. It drove them crazy! Why shake and try to figure out what a gift is if you don't know who it belongs to?! haha A live stream would be fun but they are very fast paced. By the time you begin reading one comment, 15 more have posted. haha Your morning time would be my night time but I would find that perfect! I'm still mesmerized by all the yarn in the background. A true Crocheter! I'm still working on a Graphghan and a shawl. Love the fuzzy headed birds! They were probably wanting your yarn!! Do you live near the "divide" where the ground is separating? I saw that on the news this morning. WOW! Have a great day, Christa!
@SecretYarnery6 жыл бұрын
That is so crazy! I heard about the divide from youtube comments! ha ha ha! Rains just washed away a bunch of ash. It wasn't like an earthquake, or anything. Hasn't even made the news here! ha ha ha Love the numbering idea! I use 6 different wrapping papers cut into mini card shapes, and then leave out a color/person chart on Christmas eve night. :) Figure it's less tempting for the kids, and now they think it's normalQ! I put names on them last Christmas (we were away until the 23rd, anyway) and the kids didn't even bother LOOKING! ha ha ha! WIN. :) xx!!

Hi Christa. I taught myself to crochet via a book as well. I learned how to knit for 2 weeks when I was 13 and put it aside when I went back to school.

My Grandma Evelyn & my Great Grandma Mary both crocheted. Mary would make blankets, doilies and table covers. Evelyn would make blankets, couch cover like your Grandma did, poncho & shawls. She also did needlepoint art she would free hand a lot. I have some that I want to make into shadow bow art for myself and my kids. Both of my Grandma's could not teach me by the time I wanted to learn from. I learned by watching Claire @ Bobwilson123 as well. Where do you think the best place to find crochet books that are not very expensive is? I think what you are doing is good for the ladies.

I learn crochet by watching my mom making her lots....and lotsss of table covers that she never use to date. Lol. That's 24 years ago, when I'm 9. So I know my basics. I bought my first needle in 2010 and turn to bobwilson & crochetgeek to learn how to crochet. I'm used to reading diagrams, but not written pattern. My mom own a Japanese crochet tablecloth book, that's where I learn how to read diagrams. So they help me a lot on how to read written pattern and that's how I actually know how to crochet amigurumi.

Love the poncho! Thinking I might make that! My grandma taught me to crochet too. I was age 10 with a twisted ankle and broken rib, so she taught me to crochet to keep me occupied during recovery. I took off after learning basic stitches & followed a crochet pattern for a bright pink shell vest and skirt (think 70s!!), then designed my own crochet bag to go with it & proudly wore it to my uncle's wedding! I've kept it.... not sure why, as it's pretty daggy now & no daughters or granddaughters?!? Thanks for your fun podcasts. I'm gradually binge watching my way through them! I'll eventually catch up. OMG! So much I want to say! First of all, thank you, thank you, thank you for the shout out. It warms my heart to know that you watch my little blurbs. Also, what is a “mystery package”? I love your blankets and your grandmother’s too. I know we can’t feel the blankets but they look great on video. I know you said that you cheat when picking colours to go together but I feel a lot of that is innate. You’re a natural! I took a colour theory course in college and that is one of the few things that I remember...lol. I wish I had the opportunity to raise my kids in an “old-fashioned” town. My career dictated where I had to live. Too late for them now anyway, lol (we basically have only one kid left at home). Lastly, I looooove birds! My kids call me the crazy bird lady because I am always trying to entice birds to come to our property (although feeding birds is not always a good idea because with bird food comes other issues like vermin.....another story). Question: do you consider yourself a loose or tight crocheter? I crochet very loosely because of joint issues so my attempts at amigurumi are sad.
@SecretYarnery6 жыл бұрын
You're welcome, Debbie! I'm glad you started vlogging. And your blurbs are GREAT! I had to edit this podcast so many times - don't want to offend anyone in the homeland with ALL the reasons (apparently i wanted to go on about!) why I don't want to raise my kids in the West. LOL! Yikes. Me and my big honest mouth. ha ha ha!! I love birds too! This is the first house I have lived in where they knock om the windows, though! Lucky. Do you have an mesh onion bag outside with your yarn scraps? I want to do that... had an onion bag set aside too, but completely forgot where I stashed it! Big big hugs! Oh - and LOVE that C2C you did! Great idea with the smaller shells to win the yarn chicken. BOSS move! Well played! xx!!
@CanadianCrocheter6 жыл бұрын
The Secret Yarnery thanks so much. I Don’t do that yarn scarps for the birds. There is an animal rescue sanctuary here that I frequent and they told me that it is not a good idea because they have seen many baby chicks die because they get tangled in the yarn. It turned me off. But if people are going to do it, they need to make sure that the yarn is small enough to prevent entanglement. And they also suggest not using man-made fibres because the babies sometimes peck at the nesting materials. But the biggest reason I don’t provide them with yarn is because most birds try to hide their nests and I don’t want to give them yarn that will brighten their nests. It’s like putting a big bullseye on their babies to all the predators. Anyway, that’s just me. I only provide food and water. Anyway, thats the latest installment of info from the crazy bird lady....haha

Hi Christa!! Love your podcasts!! Love learning about other podcasters as well (have already watched a couple from Hand Me Downz: the Scarborough visit. The music in the videos was just fantastic!) I personally don't care too much for the live podcasts. I like the concept of being able to connect with so many people from around the world but you end up watching the host read the posts and answering so they are bouncing all over the place. I would think it would also be hectic for the host in trying to keep up with all of the posts flying at them. BUT - I do hope that you enjoy it and that it goes well for you!! I am sure I will watch a couple once they are finished. And YES Please take us with you the next time you go to a zoo, etc...

Thanks Connie! I agree... not sure how it will work out - at ALL!! But thinking we won't have too many viewers, so the chat might be manageable? Yikes!! xx!!

I’m currently working on the pillow from your last tutorial with leftover yarn from a blanket. So the persoon who received the blanket will soon get a matching pillow :) I checked a few of the podcasts you linked. I like the Cherry heart podcast (Sandra Paul) as well (not in your list), it is nice that she has links to patterns etc in her blog as well, so you can get more information about the tings she talks about.

Hello Christa, from Arkansas, USA. My name is Chris. I learned to crochet as a child. My mom was a Crocheter. I learned to knit about 10 years ago. I learned to weave this year and learning to spin my yarn. Thank you for your crochet history. It's nice to know everyone's origin story. I would love to see a tutorial on making felted hats, i.e. fedoras or 1920's style hats. I'm curious about the initiative you mentioned. Since your Canadian, Do you miss poutine? Do you crochet your ends in as you go, or do you prefer to weave them in later? What are these mystery packages? Thanks for sharing your favorite you tube channels. Wow, those birds are beautiful. Have a great week.
@SecretYarnery6 жыл бұрын
HI Chris!! I make poutine as often as my waist line can mange! YUM! I like to do my ends in as go, although it depends on my yarn. ;) Mystery packages? Just a little bit of LOVE for some of my subscriber friends! Eases my guilt when they don't win the monthly giveaway. ha ha ha! :)

I'm enjoying your blogs so much. Love the video of the birds, what kind are they? We have a cardinal that pecking on the windows of our travel trailer this spring. I am nuts for elephants (like for 50 years) and have been a supporter of the DSWT elephant orphanage for years now. It so wonderful that you live so close and I would love to see a video if you go there to visit.

💘💘💘💘 The first project I crocheted that was a serious semi large project was a baby blanket which I made as a giant granny square in (cringe) Red Heart Mexicana. It was very bright and it was a mess overall... I had floppy uneavenness made worse by a TIGHT cable border. They never did use the thing and the baby hated it lol! They won't even use the pitiful thing as a floor m at! Anyway, peek at fiber spider a youtuber. He loves anything cluster stitch in crochet. I found him a couple weeks ago. Love that you were thinking about Chicago! I'm in a sunburn of chicago! However you're on point staying away while the kids get a little older. (In my opinion.. Don't want to get into that though.) You have to have your kids to catch an airplane bug! The birds 🐦 were aweso me. The robin's don't hang on our Wind ows. (Sigh... Amazon u p graded and I need to fix setting of something. It's making it hard to type with crazy auto correction...)
@beckyp96336 жыл бұрын
To add a bit, I'm drawn to those funky short color changing yarns like mex Oceana .... Won't let me type of lol..and have a bunch that need projects lol. Your husband's knit blanket is amazing, so sad you hated knitting. It is slow 🐌 but it can make beautiful stuff. I can't handle this new setting changing everything I type, gotta fix that now! Have a great day! Send us some warmth to the Chicago area btw ! ;)

Oh BECKY! You have no idea how LONG I kept editing this one! Upload it. Listen. Remove it. Edit more opinions... Upload it. Listen. Remove it. Edit more opinions! LOL! Yikes. Wish I was a better politician and less open book ask me anything kind of person! Well, not really. But editing the video wouldn't have taken me all day! HA HA HA! Yikes. Yeah. I hear you. BIG big hugs! But Chicago is still awesome! Love it. xx!!

Ooohhh what's the mystery parcels?!!! I used a 4mm hook on my first projects too 😂😂 it took a lifetime. I want to show my daughter how to crochet too, something she'll always have and good for the soul. I often wish I was able to crochet before I had my babies, all the things I could have made! So now I love to gift my little bits I make to people. I'm slow but utterly love doing it ❤

Hello Christa, Melissa from Ohio! just finished watching all of your podcasts/vlogs after coming across your current monthly giveaway. Took me like 3 days to watch them all. Love it! Love you! It's great! My hook and your channel! I have saved commenting or asking questions until I was caught up. Whew, so here we go! While watching I finished up a dishtowel/dishcloth set I made for a friend who is getting married next month, 2 potholders with matching dishcloths, and resumed working on a pokemon ball granny square blanket which is my current project. Questions for you- #1: You mentioned in a previous podcast that you do online gaming, what game/games do you play? #2 What happened to the bunting basket you picked up at the gift shop you recorded that you said was going to be for the April giveaway? Did you mention this and I missed it? Anywho, have a great day!

I wake up about 8:45 ...get up, make my coffee, turn the computer on and my crocheting near me. So the pst of 9:00 on Friday would work perfect for me for a live chat.

P.S. I love that you want to raise your kids in a culture that allows them to be children without the influence of “what’s cool”. It is so difficult to do this while inundated with American marketing and culture. We keep trying!

Ok, hello!!! I am a nurse in Missouri USA. I HAVE TWO CHILDREN AND one grandchild. 💗. I've just recently discovered hand dyed yarns. I've been crocheting since I was a small child, my grandma (oma) taught me crocheting, embroidery, chicken scratch and at one point I could tat. I currently have multiple WIPs including a granny scrap that's been in progress for about 10 yrs!!! Lol. I've got a baby jacket, the bowls for using in microwave, dishcloths, wrist warmers and an Afghan all wips. Wow lol shame on me, need to finish before I start something else. I live in a small town about an hour west of St. Louis. This is the first time I've introduced myself on any podcast or anyone I follow. I enjoy your podcasts and tutorials. Keep them coming, they're wonderful!!!!!

I heard about that huge crack in the earth opening up there just north of Nairobi .... how close is that to you?

Oh Raquel - I am so happy! I did the same - looking for a manageable stocking pattern. Merged a few of them together, and am SO happy with the result! They don't take long - if you gave yourself 4 hours for one - you'f have a couple finished. ;) xx!!

Hi Christa. My name is Becky, born in Mexico City but raised in NYC all my life until I got married and lived on Long Island where my one and only daughter was born. I taught myself how to crochet in Feb. 2016 by making my daughter an amigurumi BB-8 Star Wars droid. I found your channel when my daughter sent me your link for the temperature afghan. Plus she knows that my dream would be to go to Kenya for a safari. I do have a question: Does it get cold enough in Kenya for crocheted items like ponchos? Also, an aside: my cockatiel started chirping upon hearing the birds on your podcast today. Your birds are amazing. I love that they get on your windows. How lucky. 😊
@SecretYarnery6 жыл бұрын
Oh Becky - that is a million times cool! All of it! It does get chilly at night - all year round. And in our winter, well, there is no central heating systems, so the houses stay at around 18'c or 20'c... which is FREEZING after your second year! And no place to warm up but the shower or your car. So ponchos - yes. In a variety of colors! Plus it is a mdest culture here, so some places you don't want your shoulders exposed. (aka: my in-laws house!) So ponchos - shawls - wraps - all required. ;) xx!

Ha! That's cute about your cockatiel. I have a green wing macaw named Picasso and when she hears Christa's birds, she looks all around the room! It's silly.
