Thank you for showing us how to change colors of yarn easily. Not everyone knows how to use this trick. Everyone had to start at the beginning. Though it is true that this is an old pattern, you are showing us a different way to make the stitches with colors. There is always something a wise person can learn, even from something they thought they'd mastered long ago. A wise man once said that only a fool thinks they know everything. A smart person can always find room in his mind for more and different knowledge. This is a very interesting way of combining chains with the shell stitch to create a more intricate pattern. I like this interlocking variation on the shell stitch a lot. The Japanese stitchers are very innovative and I am grateful for your bringing a few of their techniques for us to use to freshen up our stitch techniques. I enjoy the stitching techniques coming from Eastern Europe, the Slavic countries and even from Russian crochet artists. These are very beautiful! You are a wise person, indeed, searching the world to learn new techniques to pass them along to us. Many thanks to you! Please do not take any derogatory comments to heart. As I foolishly proved to you myself, we Americans can and often do say hurtful things to others. Many times we think that we know everything already and we can't be taught anything new. This is neither accurate or wise, for there are a great many things we in the States do not know. Sadly, common courtesy seems to be one thing we have yet to learn and one which we need to learn most of all. On behalf of these people and myself, I offer my most humble apology, dear teacher. I’m Japanese. I don’t know whether this is a Japanese crochet pattern or not,but I think white,green and pink colors are similar to “hishimochi” or “dango”(Japanese food).And it is so amazing that this pattern looks 5-D!! I will buy yarns and do this right now.

This is basically a 2 row repeat. One of the rows is chains separated by scs; the other row is sets of (2dc-ch1-2dc). It's hard to start but once you get the rhythm it gets easier. This particular one uses 3 colors, which does complicate things; it's easier to do if you use just 2 colors, 2 rows of one color and 2 rows of the other. You get a double sided fabric that shows both colors but one will dominate, and it's gorgeous. It is thick though so try to work loosely, maybe go up a hook size. (I made a 2 color version of this, many years ago, in red and white; it was beautiful.) I hope that helps.

It's "Interlock Crochet", just a fancy name to say "it looks different from the front and back, and all rows/rounds (depending on your project) interlock with each other". Interlock Crochet & Knitting can get pretty intricate looking and there are some stunning designs. Note: this is not to be confused with Entrelac knitting/crochet which is something different entirely.

over 15 minutes for a basic overlapping shell stitch... I'm confused and a bit disappointed. but if 5D implies that this stitch is textured and also transcends time and space it may not be entirely wrong, since it's presented as a Japanese novelty, but was actually quite common in the 50s and 60s here in Italy 😅

Did the books have any sewing patterns? I had a beautiful round plump dusty pink satin cushion that had concertina material kind of folded over on each fold over a bit of the next fold, sort of like a fan effect & gathered in the center with a satin round button (that doesn't actually describe it very well & im not sure if you know what i mean or what the pattern would be called) but it was so old & delicate the material started falling apart & very old small loose foam was falling out & couldn't even salvage the satin to try to unpick it to try & see how some very talented lady made it with a lot of love. I really loved the way it looked & miss the old ways & the beautiful crafts that we don't see much of anymore. PS I subscribed to your utube channel :) cheerio from Australia 🇦🇺

I read the comments and I believe that many of you are missing the "5d" aspect!! True that there are waves, however as an artist myself. One side looks like it has hearts bug and small!! 5D means that it holds multidimensional look with different patterns using the same materials and colors that can be manipulated to give it a different texture and style depending on the viewer in how they perceive it. Since I also crochet and have inherited it from my mom, i prefer simple patterns but I am willing enough to try new techniques and gain a headache or two. I dare anyone to sit down make a mandala Afghan, my mom sure as hell did and I could see her struggle with it despite her years of experience! And she did two of them none the less, still a feat though. Every pattern has its ups and downs, hard complicated parts and easy ones. Its through doing a pattern, you start to appreciate and see it come to life as you work through it.

I have the same issue. The thing that’s helped me is to be conscious with loosening my tension. I’ll pause after every 5 or 10 chains to relax my hands and keep going.

You just need stiffer yarn. Frilly stuff is pretty all balled up but if you are free styling or looking for a uniform pattern then it’s just a matter of proper density + hook size. Plus chain stitches don’t mean anything, they blend in after the second row.

One thing that helped me immensely before I cracked the chain tension mystery was to gauge up one or two hook sizes for my base starting chain, then switch to the recommended size hook. This keeps your foundation chain nice and loose so you can easily crochet into it with the smaller hook!

You can actually get a tool online (or in a local craft store depending on your location) that helps you with your tension. It's a ring that you wear on your pointer finger that you thread the yarn through before you start crocheting. Most of the rings are cute enough to wear just for the fun of it! They aren't that expensive. Just search for "tension ring" or "yarn guide ring," and you should find something that works for you. I used to have super tight stitches as well. In fact, I still struggle with this sometimes (don't crochet when you're angry...lol). The above comments give a lot of good advice to solve this problem, too. 😊

You're on KZbin! You can learn almost anything. In the KZbin search function, search for "Crochet for absolute beginners." Get a skein of inexpensive acrylic yarn in a medium weight (look for a "4" on the label) and buy a cheap, aluminum crochet hook in size 4.5mm or 5mm. Then just follow along and don't get frustrated before you've learned to do a simple rectangle of basic stitches with fairly even sides and not-too-tight stitches. It takes some practice, but once you learn the basics - they are easy! - you will love it!

So, a modified shell stitch. How do you deal with all the ends of the yarns? Do you cut them, or run them up the side? If you run the ends up the side, how do you finish the sides so that these loose strands don't catch on everything? It's a very pretty pattern, but these finishing steps are always on my mind. Having been a crocheter since the age of 8, dealing with strands and edges are very much part of a patterns' finished look.

I cut off the colored ones, not the white ones. When I cut off, I carefully hide the ends of the threads with a needle. I tie the edges with single crochets, then you can tie any border. I do not know English well, I use a translator.

I bring the ones dropped up the border when I have had more than one color skein. And when an end has to be cut I run it across the row to crochet. Once a border is around it all, it helps hide all. Any sewn in ends I find easier to use a large plastic needle. There is a product as well to help keep ends stay hidden. I take the skeins and start making a ball, to assure not knots or weak places before I start. Plus it’s just easier in the long run. If you think you can find a piece of the yarn you put in a border later, that yarn can be used to mend it later on if need be. Learned tips from old crochet magazines.
