I would try to chain 4 and slip stitch into the first chain, instead of the magic ring. If it's not working, I would try to make the tension a little bit more loose. I hope it helps.

great tutorial! only thing is i made mine with exactly the same materials and it measured 5.5 inches which doesn't work for my project, so i had to remake it with a 4mm hook. it might be my tension but i don't think it is. it's a great tutorial though! very easy to follow and understand and it's beautiful as well :)
