@Artsy Scrub Thank you for understanding this!!!! I feel so many people say "oh well I can buy one at Target for $40." Then go buy one at target. Not that I ever sell any quilts, the ones I've made have been gifts for special people for special occasions. If I ever did go to sell a peiced quilt, I'd probably charge close to $500 for a queen size and even with that, nearly half would be cost of materials. So it would be drastically underpriced for the cost of my time.

There is a market for it. It may be a small one though. For $600 I’ll buy something designer or something else. I personally couldn’t see myself spending that, BUT that just means I’m not the market. I’d love a breakdown of what a realistic cost would look like.
@clareshaughnessy2745
@clareshaughnessy2745 Жыл бұрын
@@kkb892I’m a professional artist and a painting that costs £600 I would spend a day actually doing. I don’t know exactly how long a dress would take but I’m imagining somewhat longer than a day. If you had a plumber doing a job at your home I think you’d expect to pay that kind of money for a day or two’s work. Yarn is ridiculously expensive so I would guess there’s easily £50 worth of that, assuming she’d buy it at a wholesale price. Retail I bet there is 100 quid’s worth of wool. So 600 starts to sound pretty reasonable to me for a basic dress

As a fellow crocheter I really appreciate this, a lot of people don't realize how much time and work goes into crocheting, and even more people don't realize that crocheting can't be made by machine the way knitting can, buying crocheted work from a store for twenty dollars is slave labor, where someone spent hours of their time to make it, I appreciate what you're doing, we need more people like you so others can understand

I will never make a tablecloth or curtain (even a small one) for a window made of thin lace, unless as a gift for a loved one, because it's a whole lot of work with a tiny crochet hook (size 10 -0.75mm) and would have to cost as much as a monthly salary😅

in Poland there are still popular events where craftsmen sell their products (knit, crocheted, made of clay or wicker) and here you can still buy such handmade tablecloths or curtains, but they are very expensive and few people can afford such a purchase anyway because of low salaries. Still, despite the relatively high popularity of craft works in Poland, the awareness is too low and people do not understand where this price comes from.

I'd deffo pay a whole lot o money cause it is worth it, for instance, it is a solid vivid and lively memory of people I grew up with and I'd just feel like they're still by my side, it would be the ultimate safe blanket for sure. and of course, as you said, the amount of work and money and effort put in. if I could, I'd buy all things crochet ❤

Im working on making things to sell, so far I think halter tops/tops, scarves/shawls/wraps seem to be my go to. Especially the halter tops are quicker to make and sell for a reasonable price depending on types of yarn. Especially cotton, but acrylic are good for different color amd pattern types, but the cotton and Lion Brand bamboo and cotton yarns, good go to 😊 Bur also to make intricate and cute shawls/triangle scarfs, if able to find the right target audience and reel those people in, the right people will pay. Especially if invest in good yarn.

I probably wouldn’t sell any of those either. Dresses would take a lotta time and the size isn’t for everyone, shorts usually don’t have much coverage so it’d be hard to find a buyer, but blankets would probably be the best to sell out of these three. Probably baby blankets tho. My mom spends so much time making blankets for people though. She made one for me, my brother, her husband, and his dad, possibly his mom. There may be more and she does it all for free. I do that sometimes with hats, especially since I’m still tryna practice my crocheting before selling. I’ve sold bracelets and earrings before, so I may start setting up booths again and add cat beanies once I learn the pattern and maybe some other items/hats.

I made a pillow case with the e Even Moss stitch... that stitch ate so much yarn for a 40 x 40 cm pillow case. I counted how many balls it was and it was 7-8 balls of 8/8 cotton yarn, plus the amount of time it took. It's simply just cheaper to buy a pillow. But I don't mind making something for someone for free... if they ask nicely 😂

Generally selling creative work is so much more difficult than other kinds of work bc if you calculate it the same way ie hours spent + materials used it often comes out to super high amounts and honestly I don’t think that’s incorrect since that is the amount of time and materials just as anything else would be. But people aren’t typically willing to spend like 1000 dollars for a painting from a non popular artist. Art is a luxury and I wish it was more acceptable to charge the same amount for it that you’d be getting as a worker at any other company. But it’s not :(

I would have to agree with all 3 statements. I have been told plenty to sell some of the items I make but I would only do that if the item is already made and I don’t want it anymore. It’s difficult because crocheting can be costly and these projects that several hours, days, and sometimes weeks to make. There’s no reasonable cost that would be worth making it for that others would actually pay the proper price for

Personally I would take about 10 hours depending on materials and skill level of pattern being used. I too value an artisan’s time but a lot of people don’t realize the effort that gets put into making these items so many aren’t willing to pay the price. I would market a dress at over $100 if I’m wanting to make minimum wage also. ❤️
