My son-in-law calls this auction soup because he always got it when he went to auctions with his father. That brought back memories for me for sure of going to auctions or the steam show with my dad. I ,are my soup very similar to yours. I will often add a bay leaf or two while the beans cook, and I give a quick mash to some of the beans to add a little thickness to the soup.

Love this recipe. Looks so damn good I have to give it a shot. My mom used to do some amazing things with beans. Soups and all. Me and the wife will never forget her baked beans. They were so delicious. And she would never tell anyone how she made them. No one was even allowed in the kitchen when she made them. She passed away several years ago due to Alzheimer's and took that recipe to the grave. Thanks for sharing!

I was looking at videos trying to find out if I remembered my mom making this with just water and the ham bone , and not using chicken or vegetable broth . I do not recall her using broth and now I see you don't either . I know with our family of 7 kids and 3 picky eaters , my mom did not add any other ingredients besides the beans , water , salt , ham bone , and I recall her adding bacon bits to it . I know she soaked the beans over night in cold water and started cooking it in the morning . She cooked it all day on low and it was always awesome with cornbread . I have my brother living with me (we are old now ) and he's one of the picky eaters , but we share the cost of food , so I cant do your recipe , but it looks amazing .

My mother also made a very plain ham and bean soup. She soaked beans, and cooked only with water and the ham bone with a lot of ham left on the bone. It was still pretty flavorful, because the ham added a lot of flavor.

Great recipe! I do add the celery because it's always good to get more vegetables into one's meals and I think celery adds a unique subtle flavour that most people don't think is there. Also, a dash of turmeric and curry powder for added colour and health benefits. Brilliant with a piece of crusty French bread on an autumn eve. Perfect dinner for me.

HAM & BEAN SOUP 1-2 smoked ham hocks and some diced ham chunks (if you don't like smoke as much, only use one ham hock.) 1 large diced potato 1 diced large carrot 1 medium onion diced 1 bag of dry great northern beans Water 1 tbs Better Than Bouillon Ham Base 2 tsp thyme 1 tbs parsley 1 tbs Worcestershire Sauce (celery, liquid smoke, mashed potatoes etc. optional) DIRECTIONS: Soak the beans over night in a large flat dish with water, covering all beans plus 1-2 inches of water on top. The beans will soak up that liquid to become re-hydrated. Rinse beans and place in the crockpot. Add water to fill to 3/4 full. Add ham hocks and onion. Turn on high for one hour, then down to low for 4-5 hrs. When ham hocks are tender, remove, debone and shred/dice and add back to the soup. Add remaining ingredients and let go on slow another 1-2 hrs. Serve up with a good crusty bread and butter!
