Since Marineford I think that Crocodile's defeat at Alabasta was psychological, for finding someone who, even in the face of a big obstacle, didn't give up. On a subconscious level he needed to lose to Luffy to regain his faith. Even at Marineford he was still superior to Luffy in strength, his defeat at Alabasta was self-sabotage.

Part of the reason fans really like Katakuri and Doffy as antagonists is cos backstory via flashback. The reason Crocodile doesn't rise as high has to do with a lack of a proper backstory. I had never really considered that we might actually get one eventually but now that I have I want it. And yes, there is probably a thirst joke in there as well. That all noted after watching this I now eagerly await an opportunity to use the phrase "I'm smelling what you're smoking" in casual conversation.

It really does. During Alabasta the WG could have thought she would actually prove useful with her Poneglyph-reading skills in locating Pluton for them. Soon after Baroque Works goes down they target her directly via CP9 to coerce her into revealing the location for them. The scenario checks out.

My two theories on Croc: • He's in Sword, and deeply dedicated to his cover. Assuming Garp is also in Sword and allowed his adopted grandson to die for the greater good, Crocodile was likewise willing to let an entire nation fall. • Or, he is a broken idealist. Once tried to become a marine, but was rejected, so became a pirate, then Shichibukai, to exact some kind of petty revenge on the WG that he feels wronged him by destroying from the the inside. Either way, I believe that Crocodile is the complicated trope of a character that has only good intentions but horrible means to reach that end. His goals are so important and righteous in my own mind that he's willing to kill or destroy whatever is in way without a second thought. That is, until Luffy showed him a better way, and that's the real reason he saved Luffy's life at Marineford.

I wonder if the secret Ivankov knows is related to the loss of trust, like if Ivankov was involved somehow in the aftermath of whatever betrayal Crocodile suffered, maybe not being the Jinbe after Marineford to his Luffy, but maybe somehow helping Croc survive the betrayal or get back on his feet in a way Crocodile would be ashamed to have as public knowledge (maybe even the fact of the betrayal itself, and Ivankov's knowledge of it, is enough for him to feel shame at the idea of it being exposed for making him look like a fool)? I like to think it's something more jaw-dropping than that, but Ivankov transitioning him into the body he wanted is only one possibility. Ivankov is well connected and has a lot of resources, literally rules an island kingdom, it's entirely possible it's more that side of Ivankov that was involved than the Horu Horu no Mi.

Crocodile tried to compensate his failed dreams by achieving a utopia the name goal of his operation that's been orchastred under the rain base city which ironically dubbed the city of dreams because that city was never dry from any dehydration unlike crocodile's dreams and aspirations have been shriveled up and died from lack of moisture fitting his concept ability which ties to dehydration and his followers also follow his dry utopia because their dreams also have been dried up and wish to be part of his utopia He's so dry he doesn't even let the rain itself give him any hopes for attaining his desires because his thirst for romance and adventure have all been withered away

Crocodile is so dry he doesn't even believe in hope and dreams so it's fitting his dry and withered idealism can only be countered by water Even water was a major theme in alabasta ironically being tied to sea when the whole arc was in a desert island In a way crocodile was luffy's dark mirror if Luffy where to forsake his friends or distrust them and eventually his dreams and Luffy would have turned that way hadn't been for his big moist and thicc whale shark future crewmate who had to beat sense into Luffy before his ideals become shriveled away and forgotten and only Luffy was capable of developing such friends to aid him where he would needed him the most when jinbe wasn't even a part of his crew yet Then eventually jinbe would save his life and thematically restart the interracial relationships by giving Luffy his living liquid

The thing with Crocodile is, he seemed like classic villan back then. But early OP, like many stories give me the vibes that the overarching (here: World Government) plot wasn't polished yet (or even existing), making this something Oda could definitely add to his character with ease, just because his world expanded so much between Alabasta and Impel Down, leaving enough room for it. Nothing he said back then like the classic bad guy he was would be wrong in hindsight but if this theory proves to be true, this could revert the tropes with him to a satisfactory level without taking much from the Crocodile we saw in Marineford.

Also crocodile somehow managed to discover a species that's a natural predator to the sea kings the banana crocs which contradicts the sea kings purpose and position in the food chain unless crocodile went out of his way to create new species of life form that can prey on the sea kings crocodile might have committed a paradox in the food chain just display his true power and wits

Very cool video Dawn. To me these little things, like the dialog at Impel Down between Ivankov and Croc, is one of the reasons why I like Oda's storytelling so much. There might not be anything behind their dialog, but to throw in some little opportunities that you come back to later in the story, to use it for more world building is master class. Sometimes i think how the One Piece world would be like if Luffy never exist. The quick answer is, extremely more dark with almost no hope. Alabasta would be destroyed. But i don't think Crocodile would be able to complete his goals in that coutry. Because he would be alone whit no strong clue of Pluton. His trust issues would be his downfall.

It's easy for him to get more attractive the older you get because you're farther and farther away from the 4Kids dub. But his final fight with Luffy is still just amazing. Maybe the Gorosei had information on the person that betrayed him and him handing over Pluton would allow Crocodile to find them and get his revenge. I just hope he eventually comes back.

Oda had said his bounty would have been worth double his pre freeze bounty based on strength alone, so 162 million. Then the other former warlord who was at Marineford, Jinbe, his bounty jumped from his frozen 250 million to 438 million, a jump of 188 million berries, or you can also take Luffy's bounty jump from the event of 100 million. IMO his bounty would be in the range of 262 million to 350 million.

I have a bit of construuctive criticism (and I really hope that if you do read the comments this isn't taken the wrong way). First off your theory about Garp's daughter being Luffy's parent was the most amazing One Piece theory I have ever heard. It is why I subscribed to your channel. Your theory and discussion videos are very good. However chapter review vids aren't really good if they come out several days later. Tekking101 has said many times that he reads the spoilers and the early fansubs, but he waits for the official release to come out and posts his review after, but on the same day. I don't know if same day as the official release is doable for you, but it would probably really help. The reason I mentoned Tekking in particular is because for years he was filming in basically a closet where he could touch both side walls at the same time. Your videos look like you are trying to film in a quarter of that space with the camera mushed up as close to you as possible. Your content is on point, however I think that your presentation of that content could be better. I think if your videos looked a bit less clastrophobic (again like a 6x10' space) the quality of your presentation would skyrocket. Liam looks like he is in a professional sould booth. You don't need that at all, but you do look very cramped.

Hey there! Believe me, no one is more aware of these issues than I am haha. The last three chapter reviews have been later than usual due to work having rostered me on fulltime hours while I'm also studying fulltime and trying to build this channel. The hours are starting to reduce but they still have me doing nights, which is when I do my most effective video work, and has thrown both my KZbin and sleep schedules off rhythm. We're working on it, however. This channel is still very new and I'm still learning how to most effectively edit my videos. I turned around my last chapter review in an evening, which would be great timing if I could just get it done earlier. I aim for Mondays, as I don't want to read spoilers. As for current presentation, there's nothing I can do about that right now. I'm in the tiniest bedroom I've ever lived in, filming under my loft bed. As you mentioned, even Tekking's old place is huge to my current space. I'll be getting a more vlog-friendly camera hopefully with a wider lens as well as a dynamic mic in the new year, which will lift production quality somewhat, but I won't be moving somewhere new til next August at soonest. Having a separate office/studio space from my bedroom would be a dream, but unfortunately that would be out of my price range here in Sydney. I hope to be able to deliver that quality one day however.

Considering that Doflamingo offered an prospect of a coalition I believe that Crocodiles backstory is like Doflamingo's but different I believe that Crocodile was the bastard son of the Gorosei with ringlets tying in with Captain Hook whom Crocodile is based off or that Iva and Crocodile are brothers and tried to save one of the four nations that Judge Vinsmoke succeeded in ruling but found out that Iva worked with Judge to take over nation with his hormone abilities and Croc got his new amped up body from Iva's hormone steroids 2. Crocodile is the son of Shakky and looked up to his mentor of Xebec till being told by Whitebeard and others that he was a mean man who got his crew through Davy Back fights became disillusioned and went solo

Thinking about it I find the idea of Croc's "Utopia" to be very similar to the framing of The Great Kingdom from the Void Century before the WG forming. Could Crocodile wanted Baroque Works, Pluton and said "Utopia" in order to actually fight the WG?
