After 50 views, those screams never fail to terrify. Within days of my first seeing it, I saw a baby elephant that had the lower half of its trunk ripped off entirely. That's not something an elephant can survive for long. Their trunk feeds them, leads them to water and helps them drink, grabs onto trees to reach higher branches for food, and even help them get out of situations where they fall into a pit and can only try to grasp something to pull itself up. Lastly - and if anyone agrees, please respond - I was really shocked by the family. In almost every other incident I've ever seen, a young elephant's family will protect their young at all costs. Its aunt is just as protective as its own mother. That's why I couldn't believe my eyes when not only did they all retreat, but they actually _watched_ as that young elephant suffered with agony until one finally stepped in (literally).
