On May 29, 1960, the annual field day of the Boys Club at Cross Highway Athletic Field in Redding, CT was held. Cromagnon singer Austin Grasmere won the 60-yard dash for boys aged 9-11. In July, he played on the Bridgeport Little League team the Panthers. In August, he & brother David were in Boy Scout Troop 15 in Redding & attended Camp Mauwehu then & in July 1961. In June 1961, Austin & father Roy starred in Portrait in Black, presented by the Redding Players. Believe it or not my favorite Cromagnon music from their Orgasm album is 'First World of Bronze': the guitarist behind that song was way ahead of his time. Almost nobody was able to solo at the speed he executed. I didn't know people did that in the 60s. I thought it started in the 70s. That guitarist could've been a rockstar in the heavy metal or rock industry.

Talk about a topic to find your channel with... Personally, for as long as I've known about them, Cromagnon, and Caledonia in particular, always felt like a band pre-empting the rise of Industrial music as a whole, 6 years before Throbbing Gristle created the term, and a full decade before bands like Test Dept appeared which used similar, stomping, march-like sounds and rhythms, with similarly esoteric and dark lyrics as many early industrial bands would end up with. I firmly believe that had they appeared in the late 70's or early 80's, they'd have fit right in with the Industrial movement, their shows would have ended up being almost like being at an early Einstürzende Neubauten show, as their ideas for being so chaotic that the shows would be banned for it would naturally end up in a similar place, the sounds of power tools, metal sheets slammed together, and the concept of "found instruments". No doubt they would have been VERY popular in Japan at the time. It's a shame, then, that they only got to be recognized for what they created decades later once the internet allowed for a massive proliferation of strange records like Orgasm, previously only known due to things like the Nurse with Wound list, which is also how I came to known them, as well. While personally, I think the only truly listenable track is Caledonia, the entire record is a very unique experience to behold, and anyone interested in obscure experimental music should absolutely listen to it at least once.

Actually, there were a lot of bands making something akin to metal in 1969-1970 (before Sabbath). High Tide released their album "Sea Shanties" in 1969, and while some of the songs like "Walking Down their Outlooks" and "Pushed but Not Forgotten" had some lyrics that would probably still be controversial today (for example, one of their many lines about religion, "quoting every latest god who prostitutes advice for them to sell"), they weren't super different than other rock music at the time; however, "Futilist's Lament" and "Death Warmed Up" would probably count as metal by modern standards. Also, many bands such as Iron Claw, Fresh Blueberry Pancake (mainly with the song "Clown on a Rope", their others weren't nearly as heavy) Bulbous Creation, and Dark all started recording music around the time of Sabbath's first album. Iron Claw was heavily influenced by Sabbath because they had attended many of their concerts before they made it big (and I believe Alex Wilson, a member of Iron Claw, actually recorded one of Sabbath's shows in 1969, making it the first time they were ever recorded) and even performed a version of War Pigs with alternate, older lyrics a few months before it was released officially. As far as I'm aware, though, it's entirely possible that the others created their sounds individually. Sabbath definitely ensured that metal became popular, but it seems entirely possible and debatably even likely that it would have developed into something akin to its current form with or without them. I should also note that I've really gotten into proto-metal of this sort within the last few years, and I've listened to quite a few groups. Cromagnon is incredibly unique and probably the strangest among them.
@DissectingtheDisco Жыл бұрын
Have heard of High Tide but I’ve got to check out the others! I say it in the vid of course but for me it’s the vocals on “Caledonia” that make it “metal” for me, compared to other proto-metal tracks. For example, Cactus’ cover of “Parchment Farm” is speedy as hell but doesn’t have aggressive vocals. Anyways, the transition from rock to metal is more of a spectrum when you start to dig deep, as you hinted at. Thanks so much for watching and dropping a line!
@BSIII11 ай бұрын
Iron Claw Skullcrusher is incredible. They also did the very first Sabbath cover as well. They covered War Pigs (actually the original Walpurgis) before it was even officially released.

This band wasn't doing anything that different from label mates The Godz who made multiple records on ESP-Disk. "Contact High with The Godz" is 3 years earlier and just as demented.
