This 16th century packhorse bridge was used in the English Civil War when Cromwell's New Model Army marched across the River Hodder on their way to victory at the last major engagement of the war, the Batlle of Preston. It is said to have inspired J R Tolkien into creating the Brandywine Bridge of his 'Lord of the Rings' novel as he lived nearby for a time when he was writing it. As a packhorse bridge it always had low parapets to permit horses with panniers to cross easily. Public access is now denied (2023) and the Lower Hodder Bridge is dangerous for pedestrians.
