I'll take a shot at intrepreting the meaning of this trailer. I believe this game is going for a "I Am Legend" theme, where the roles of hunter and monster are reversed. The trailer gives me vague "I Am Legend" vibes (the book, not the movie). In the book, Dr. Neville is the last human on earth who hunts and kills mutant vampires. Unlike the movie, the vampires are intelligent and sentient. They are afraid of the human, who hunts them one-by-one during the day while they sleep. At the end of the book, the vampires and humans roles have been reversed, and Neville becomes the legend spoken of in hushed whispers by the vampires who live in constant fear of the "human" monster. In this trailer, we see two juxtaposed scenarios. In one, the person in the armor is fighting against alien monsters. In the other, we see a chess match between a meek human woman and a mutated grotesque version of the player character in armor (faceless, dripping with the blood of his victims), a monster. The old woman represents the mutants/aliens, who could be part of a hivemind. The creature cannot understand why they are being hunted, but they fight to survive. They stay several moves of the hunter, like in a game of chess, but always playing by the rules. But the hunter does not play by the rules, because even after losing the chess match, he rises from his defeat to deliver the killing blow. There is probably an in-game lore explanation here for the hunter's ability to win after losing a battle, a la Returnal, where the player rebounds again and again after death, learning, evolving, and killing. The player character is the legend spoken of in terrified whispers among the alien creatures--a faceless, emotionless, killing machine who will not stop until every last alien creature is dead.

Usually wouldnt read a comment this long bit thats an interesting take; i like it. Kind of how Geralt is viewed by monsters in the Witcher, we see him as a humanoid and relatable to ourselve so its easy to paint him as the hero, but the monsters arent mindless and have their own thoughts feelings, and most importantly fears. The song in game and trailers ‘lullaby of woe’ is a song known by ‘monsters’ in the series to warn their young of the dangerous and feared monster lurking in the woods, The Witcher.

@@Mono-kp2qw Let's not get carried away, now. The Silent Hill 2 Remake had a LOT of hype and baggage to it, so Bloober HAD to do well with it. Cronos, on the other hand, is an original IP for them. They're infamous for making games with super cool, interesting premises that get botched super hard. The Medium, Layers of Fear... hell, even the Blair Witch game they made that wasn't even an original IP. I'm intrigued by this game's premise, and the Traveler's armor looks super cool and original, but I'm gonna keep a cautious eye on the game until it comes out. I've been burned enough times by games that turned out to be boring or down-right bad.

It definitely feels like an intentional concession rather than checkmate, yeah. There was too much intention behind the game played here for there not to be a reason for it beyond "the creators didn't chess properly when choosing to animate this chess scene".
