Fascinating stuff. Poor creature. At least it seems to have a caring owner who took them to you so you could make a custom shoe for them?

Not that I own or ride horses, but came across one of your videos one day and have been fascinated by the process of fixing so seriously neglected hooves. I’ve now learnt enough to know that the first step is to find the true direction and angle of the “Frog”, and when you did that, even my untrained eye could see how far out of straight that hoof was. 20° to the side at least, and also tipped to the side. That would have to be seriously uncomfortable for the horse. Keep the wonderful work coming, and keep educating us viewers.
@sfoster8932

This horse's hooves aren't necessarily neglected. They had grown long and needed a trim, sure, but they looked healthy. The horse's problems stemmed from an anatomical misalignment of his lower leg.

The horse had some serious conformational defects. Conformation is how the horse is built physically. The back pasterns (ankles) are crooked and it looks like he may possibly also have a club foot on the left hind. Because this horse has such poor build, they just trimmed him and made a shoe that will give his leg and hip more support. Most likely this horse is not sound enough to be ridden and they are just maintaining this horse for his comfort so that he can live as pain free as possible with his poor build.

How closely did you match the rear hoof angles? Also, because the horse lands first on the outside branch and squeezes the foot to the inside, I would have (40 yrs. ago) widened, and also thickened the outside heel, so that it contacted the ground a bit earlier. You make a very nice shoe.

Trim to the hoof capsule and confirmation. Years ago in shoeing school people always said trim to the horses confirmation. I’ve learned if you try to change horses foot to confirmation it’s worse for the horse. Trim to the hoof capsule meaning every horses foot is different in length and depth and maintain his confirmation. Looks like nice school.

Definitely overweight, I also noticed that. The conformation is so off they horse probably has damaged spine or joints out of alignment. There is so much more wrong with this horse than the direction of the bones and the way it walks.

So when you have a horse that loads the lateral side (hard) why do you flatten the lateral branch? My guess is the medial side needs to be slightly higher to help dissapate the uneven loading?

Does one of these videos come with an anatomy lesson. I know a horse's hoof is analogous to two of our toes, but I don't know which structures are equivalent. Help?
@word6344
@word6344 Жыл бұрын
Coffin bone deep inside the foot is the furthest toe bone from the body. Pastern bone, jointed above the coffin bone, is the second furthest toe bone. The hoof itself, made of keratin, is a big specialized toenail.

@@word6344 Thank you. What is the "frog" and all the yellow/white stuff he shaves off?
@platedlizard
@platedlizard Жыл бұрын
@@adde9506 the white stuff is horn, basically like our fingernail. the frog is an interesting part, that the triangular protrusion in the center of the hoof and it helps pump blood up to the horse's heart and lungs. It's thought to be a remnant of two other fingers/toes. Horses have other remnants of their other toes as well, or rather pads (like a cat or dogs "toe beans"). On horses these are called chestnuts and they're bits of callused flesh on the inner part of their upper legs

It always freaks me out to see people without helmets around horses because when I was in riding school we were taught to never ever take off our helmets because it would be certain death. And we were told all kinds of horror stories about what happened to people who didn't wear their helmets. I love horses. I also respect that they are heavier and stronger than me and could absolutely end my life if they chose to. It's a combination of love and respect. (Cupcake and I have a good bond though, he's very calm and I know his personality well enough. But I also don't get complacent.)

It would be like going from an old junky pair of shoes to a great pair of new ones. You might have an adjustment period, but your going to be happier and more comfortable in the new shoes in no time.
@ferrous719

As someone who works on humans who need postural correction, there is an adjustment as the weakened muscles are worked, like any exercise program. But correction ultimately leads to less compensation and overall less pain.

How in the world does a horse get such twisted legs??? Birth defect/ starvation/illness or injury? Am I wrong to think that"s a broodmare? If so it must not be a genetic origin to the twisted legs. As a human with bad feet and worse legs I can commiserate with that horse. A great farrier like you really does mean the difference between life and death for these horses with such long term problems. Thanks from the bottom of my heart for saving the ones you can.
