@Bradley Cullinan We're both guessing as to what PSA listerners know, but my guess is that the base is well-educated and already familiar with the ideas Hasan spoke about. I'm a fan of his, but he hasn't invented "proper leftist arguments." What he spoke about are well-established ideas that anyone with more than a passing interest in politics and/or a well-rounded education are already familiar with. I doubt that this was an introduction for any PSA listeners.

@@Nushka1962 Nah...your average PSA watcher is a "centrist" who supports corporatist Democrats (e.g. socially liberal but economically and foreign policy conservatives), in other words RIGHT of center Democrats, who are to the LEFT of the right of center corporate Republicans (socially, economically, and foreign policy conservative). Most "left" normies don't even have a coherent or unified political belief system and don't understand that "centrist," or "moderate" is just a stand in or euphemism for; " the system as it exist needs some change, but the problems don't impact me personally enough in a negative way for me to be bothered...as a matter of fact I'm doing ok under the current organization of the structures that we use to organize our society. I'm not really looking for radical change as it could upend and affect my position in the precariously balanced existing order that I currently feel relatively comfortable and secure in." Sadly, but understandably (due to our failed education system, complicit corporate media, and lack of media literacy amongst the general population) PSA and normie left people are unaware that they are actually more in favor of the status quo than they realize, and Hasan is trying to break through to them to let them know that they aren't really "leftist," and that they should question why they are so comfortable with the more "left" of the two RIGHT of center corporatist political franchises in this country, who at the end of the day are political enemies of the actual political/policy truly left of center folks. (P.S. for the record those who are actually left of center recognize that they have no power currently. As a matter of fact they are hated by both corporatist parties, but especially the corporatist Democrats (it should be obvious why). That being said, for strategic reasons, it is temporarily necessary to collaborate with enemies of the left, like the RIGHT of center corporate Democrats, to slow the damage that right of center corporate Republicans willfully inflict on the system (as they are the absolute worst of "the two evils"), until the progressive left of center forces have enough political power on the ground to then affect the dynamics inside the halls of power to vanquish both right of center corporate Democrats and Republicans (the enemy of my enemy is my temporary "friend"). This political project in my opinion will be at the very least a 30 year fight/investment to make left of center politics/policy the dominant reality).

I think one of the things about Hasan's platform that he almost touched on is that the messages he advocates for are a lot more palatable for people who aren’t on board when it comes from a guy like him. I'm trans, and a normie transphobe will never hear me out. They will hear out a giant bro-y white guy. It's what makes him such a valuable advocate.

I also think it works well that it's not ALL he talks about. His streams have general idiocy, games, group watches... and the biggest thing for me is he doesn't really jump in on the infighting bullshit from breadtube. Vaush, Zena and Poppy piss me off to no end sniping at Natalie Wynn and Abigail Thorne, rather than talking WITH them... it's that "holier than thou" conviction and "smarter than you" smugness while telling you you're never doing enough correctly that can shut people the fuck off. Meanwhile, Thoughtslime and Sophie From Mars kinda stay in their own lane and amicably engage. But Hasan is special in that he lays out basics and essentially says "OK, now shut the hell up and stop being insane. Let's just treat each other with respect." Although some shrug him off for yelling at chat, his frustration with those few lunatics and preachers in an average 17k person stream is completely understandable.

I have to agree 100%. I'm a cis/het white guy that started going down the alt right pipeline in high school. Luckily I didn't go fully alt right, but I got wrapped up in the pandering they did to white men for a year or 2. Hasan was my introduction to Leftist politics and fully converted me. And after a bit of self reflection, I've come to realize that if Hasan wasn't a big, bluky white guy, I probably wouldn't have become a fan of his. I was still a dumb normie that was obsessed with aesthetics. It sucks knowing that I only started listening to arguments on the left because they came from a white guy. But I'm happy it happened regardless. I've become a more accepting and empathetic person because of it😊

@@WaveyBavey it WAS easy to start going down that path, say like 2014 before these freaks were known quantities. I was listening to Sargon and Teal Deer around Gamergate, as I honestly had issues with integrity in games journalism (I mean, it was weird knowing how Jeff Gerstmann founded Giant Bomb, but then seeing Brad Shoemaker in the leaked GG mails). That led into the wage gap pushback. And I was only just starting to get politically aware beyond Fox being shit, so it was funny that while I formed my own opinion on the gender pay gap (it does not exist in any meaningful way for people not making 6 figures), what got me to pump the brakes was when Sargon started talking about Muslims. I am not a fan of ANY organized religion that informs a society, so yeah, that shit didn't fly with me. My issue is religion used by _scumbags,_ not the people raised under that. And if you bristle at my assessment of the gender pay gap, check out Second Thought's "How Capitalism Ruins Feminism." I'm proud of hitting that conclusion on my own like 7 years before a big(ish) name did.

Some things can’t be boiled down to profit, healthcare, education, technology… these things are hard to quantify and harder to place a value on, but we all know these things are paramount but it seems we’re ok with allowing “the market to sort it out”. He also allows anyone to use his IP so there are a handful of unofficial YT channels that put out an even broader subset of his Twitch content. Given your reaction to this convo, I think you'd really enjoy going deeper into this world. He explores these topics in much greater depth and breadth, and many more. He's also being very non-confrontational w/ the pod Jon here in this interview, but he articulates very compelling counterpoints to many of the mainstream conventional wisdom takes Jon brings up in this conversation (that Hasan largely leaves unchallenged here, I think very intentionally so this audience doesn't write him off immediately without ever even engaging with the substance of these leftist positions). For a big chunk of my life I held the same mainstream, technocratic, liberal perspectives Jon, most of the PSA audience, and almost all Democrats hold. It's a very powerful default for anyone even vaguely progressive or "left" leaning. When I eventually started to deeply engage with and study politics and discovered actual leftist frameworks like Marxism a decade ago it became very clear how inadequate and harmful (neo)liberalism is, how right wing it is, and how closely aligned both Dems and Reps actually are on issues of real, material power (war, labor vs. capital power, democracy, ...)

He says offensive stuff, then just sweeps it under with a "I'm just an online dummy" cover which I find particularly annoying considering how seriously he takes himself when his foot isn't in his mouth. @@dreamingrightnow1174 Pretty sure I heard him describe himself as "just some guy," multiple times in this interview. He also described how he mixes more light-hearted content and video reacts into the later hours of his stream to avoid burnout and just relax for a while. So yes, he gets into a lot of silly videos, discussions, and humor. Sometimes he even goes off on chatters that come into the stream with either stupid takes or ill-intent behind their messages. He acts the way he does because that's who he is in his actual life. The fact that you seem to be expecting him to behave like a drone (one of those CNN or MSNBC anchors that they grow in a lab) on a Twitch stream is an objectively wrong way to approach Twitch, first of all, and sounds like a you problem and not a Hasan problem.

His "marriage between a man and a woman" had a huge impact (and still does) on my life; so there's that. When the Obama myth of greatness is still trumpeted to this day, I can only shake my head at the insensitivity and lack of awareness it indicates. When will we learn to stop lionizing leaders and look at them wholly, failings and all. He still hasn't (nor do PSA) acknowledge his failings. On the campaign trail he touted the need for transparency, but in office he launched more investigations into the (unconstitutional) Espionage Act, more than any previous president. I would say the three most grievous aspects were the bombings, the marriage inequality and going after whistle-blowers, but the vast majority of his apologists weren't personally affected by those things and they tend to be glossed over. Maybe charm shouldn't be so high on the list of attributes for elected officials.

I'm not a big Hasan fan for irrelevant reasons, but it's good to have an actual leftist on crooked. You need more of this if you want to push for meaningful change.

This was so fascinating. Perfectly articulates a better approach to leftist politics for those of us who are frustrated by corporate, capitalist apologist Dems, but also confused and annoyed by the distractions of leftist identity politics.

Two of my favorite podcasters. Both incredibly interesting and intelligent. I wasn’t aware That Hassan used to work for TYT. That was interesting. He’s so well versed in so many topics. Well that and as very informative for me as a grandmother who is so much a person who’s come into being interested in politics later in life. I really appreciated the talk about importance of local politics ❤

@@Wray62 Hmm... that is kinda disappointing to hear, not going to lie. I am gen Z too and while my generation is incredibly progressive, which I think is a good thing, we are not all on the same page, of course. I think people should give Hasan a chance. I personally don't think him buying an overpriced house in Hollywood completely makes him a hypocrite if you understand what he really believes.
@Wray62
@Wray62 Жыл бұрын
@@TonyMezaXD For real. No false grouping (GenX, Millenial, GenZ) are a monolith. What was considered progressive when I was young is just not today. Anyway, the interview was great and I told my son about it. Maybe he'll give it a listen?
@no_less03
@no_less03 Жыл бұрын
@@Wray62 , what was considered progressive back in the day is still progressive to this day, it's just that mainstream progressiveness has been expanding and now liberals take progressive talking points way more often. Back then you still had women, black people and lgbtq+ groups advocating for the same rights. However, they were seen as a threat or too extreme, which is why they were silenced or straight up murdered by those in power (white conservative politicians and white supremacists like the KKK), and even among left leaning voters, you still had some homophobic, transphobic, sexist and racist behaviors. Maybe your son will give it a try, btw. It just depends on how much you both interact as in, newer generations see old generations as cringy due to how hyper aware we are nowadays and some of us may think we know better than older generations, which is somewhat true due to how much more education newer generations are receiving. After all, millennials received more education than gen X, and gen Z/zoomers are expected to surpass millennials, and the trend is likely to happen with gen alpha (those who were born after 2010 up until to those who will born in 2025.)
