Wooden Ships
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Wooden Ships"
"Wooden Ships" is a rock song written and composed by David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Paul Kantner (of Jefferson Airplane) in the late 1960s. The song was written and composed in Florida on Crosby's boat. Crosby composed the music, and Stills and Kantner wrote most of the lyrics.[1]

[edit] Background
Paul Kantner could not be officially credited as one of the joint authors-composers of "Wooden Ships" on the original release of Crosby, Stills & Nash due to legal issues, but he is thus officially credited on the 2006 re-release. The song was also released by Jefferson Airplane the same year on the album Volunteers. Both versions are considered to be original versions of the song, although they differ slightly in wording and melody.
Crosby recorded a solo demo in March 1968 with the melody but no lyrics. Stills recorded his own demo the following month with most of the lyrics in place.
[edit] Timing
"Wooden Ships" was written at the height of the Vietnam War, a time of great tension between the United States and the Soviet Union, nuclear-armed rivals in the Cold War.
[edit] Interpretations
Like Tom Lehrer's "We Will All Go Together When We Go" and Barry McGuire's "Eve of Destruction," the song seems to deal with ever-present fears of an apocalyptic nuclear war.[citation needed] In this interpretation, the words of the song depict the horrors confronting the survivors of a nuclear holocaust in which the two sides have annihilated each other. A man from one side stumbles upon a man from the other side and asks him, "Can you tell me, please, who won?" Since the question has no real meaning in the circumstances (or even at all), it is left unanswered. To stay alive, they share purple berries that have presumably not been poisoned by radiation. The lyrics beg "silver people on the shoreline" to "let us be"; these are commonly held to be men wearing radiation suits.[citation needed] As wooden ships are carrying the survivors away, radiation poisoning kills those who have not made it aboard:[citation needed]
Horror grips us as we watch you die
All we can do is echo your anguished cries
Stare as all human feelings die

Now at 69 yrs. old the tears well in my eyes while listening. First heard about them in 69 in the movie Woodstock. Now in 2021 March...I watch them in different years...77 was when everyone was coming out of the 60's CSN was not to be trifled with as another group that would burn out...they were and still are a gift to us all.

Oh my man. I'm also in my sixties. Reading your entry brought ME to tears! For some reason, I can't quite place it, when I listen to this song, it makes me think of Robert Heinlein's, "Stranger in a Strange land." It also conjures images for me if the American Civil War. "Hey, can I have some of your purple berries? Yes, I've been eating them, six, or seven weeks now, probably keep us both alive..." I envision two soldiers walking home, from different sides, and this exchange...

Oh my God…thank you for your comments. I, too, remember the first feeling felt to this song… how blissfully innocent we all were then…I do believe that this can still be our anthem out of this dystopia into a real, self-generated euphoria that is our birthright! Yes…

This song, to me, fits so well, about an encounter of two civil war soldiers, each from the opposite side. They ran away from the madness, found each other in the wilderness somewhere, and decided to live in peace until the war blew over. I wonder who wanted to know who won. Johnny Reb, or the blue coat. In my mind, since I was young, that was the scenario that had cemented itself in my mind, regardless of what the song was actually about. The harmony is just incredible.

AMAZING!! What a terrible loss. All the greats from that era almost gone. I already don't recognize this country as the one I grew up in. Sad to say, I cannot think of one f'in thing that has changed for the better in the last few decades. Despite all that was happening around us, we were HAPPY in the 1970s. Now, so much internal strife abounds. Sad, very sad, indeed.

Quite nice video/audio quality (from 1977!). Professionally filmed & well edited. The performance shows why Stephen Stills is a highly underrated guitar player (he's a fantasic bass player, too, by the way). Hey, even David Crosby wakes up a bit & plays a lick or two (love the harmonics at the end). I think this tour was mainly to promote their "CSN" album. It looked like a good one.

One of my favorite bands of that golden era. Truly men among boys, prophets and voices of a generation. I firmly believe that if the world hadn't this music to provoke a deeper realization of our roles as stewards of the lives of Gaia, there would now not be a Gaia at all. God is wise, and we are made in his image. God bless you all, my brethren. Keep growing, for now we face a transformation into adulthood, or a degenerative decent born of spiritual idleness. God will not force us, because we are given free will. We have the tools now, and are on our own. Will we master technology, or will it master us? The latter means destruction for all aboard our beautiful blue spaceship. The former means standing beside our creator in blessedness. Love is all, God is love. And yes, we are god. Love to all of you.

Wow, this makes me cry over and over again. Because of this song, I started writing my own lines for a song. If you smile at me I will understand 'Cause that is something Everybody everywhere does in the same language I can see by your coat, my friend you're from the other side There's just one thing I got to know Can you tell me please who won? Say can I have some of your purple berries? Yes, I've been eating them For six or seven weeks now haven't got sick once Probably keep us both alive Wooden ships on the water very free and easy Easy, you know the way it's supposed to be Silver people on the shoreline let us be Talkin' 'bout very free and easy Horror grips us as we watch you die All we can do is echo your anguished cries Stare as all human feelings die We are leaving, you don't need us Aaaah ... Go take your sister then by the hand Lead her away from this foreign land Far away where we might laugh again We are leaving, you don't need us And it's a fair wind Blowin' warm out of the south over my shoulder Guess I'll set a course and go
