ICU... Sleeping/sedated patients mostly, high acuity/severe patient conditions/stress, OCD personality required, control freak personality required, most CPR situations in the hospital. ED... Drunks/drug seekers, sniffles/sneezes, and psych holds are most of your customers, periodically trauma like you'd expect... Get shit done even if it's messy personality required, time sensitive treatment required... assertive attitude required... Most aggressive behavior situations in the hospital. In my experience :-p

Does anyone know what kind of personality would be needed for the NICU? I’ve always wanted to work there but I have ADHD lol

It's so weird, I'm outgoing and fast paced at work and totally introverted at home... its like I'm two different people. I enjoy the fast pace of being a first responder but also absolutely love things like palliative care, and absolute caring and devotion to others.... still cant decide what I think I'd like.

I'm the same way! But since I like the fast pace and variety at work, I'm definitely going for ER. Can't wait.

I will say that ICU Nurse is focused on head to toe assessment/care of the patient in very detailed /organized fashion/manner and ER Nurses are focused on one specific issue patient came with and that is why these two nurses will have a very hard time during report for ER to ICU admission patients 🤷🏼♀️

I just was having a conversation about this with two co-workers who were ICU and now are ER. I have been curious lately about working on different units and was curious about going from ER to OR or ER to ICU. The ICU nurses are going to hate me hear but I am just writing about what my conversation was as I think its funny I just had this conversation 2 days ago and you make this video today. Both the former ICU nurses advised me to not go to the ICU as it is boring compared to ER. They both referenced their experience in the ICU as just maintaining a body. They stated you rarely talk to your patients as they are sedated. The job is mainly charting, and you are like a robot with your hourly rounds with pump checks, med maintenance, turning the patient, cleaning and wiping. I never worked in the ICU so I do not truly know what it is like, but if I do leave the ER I think I would be looking to go to the OR while I finish a higher degree to become a nurse instructor;

I did ER and currently doing ICU Now. Both unit requires two different skill sets. You need foundational skills no matter what but totally different approach to a matter. Er is what they called chaotic management. Fast pace, get them in and get them out mindset. You have to be on your toes because at any moment you can get slam. ICU its more critical thinking, problem solving, attention to detail, more organization skill. Believe it or not 2 patients is alot alot of work for a nurse in ICU. ADHD=ER OCD=ICU....however learn to master both environment personality type.

Good video overall! Some points I don’t agree on having worked in both, ED and ICU. ICU isn’t always controlled and/or structured, things can go wrong very quickly and becoming chaotic. It’s rather similar to resus in ED, people can change from stable to unstable in the click of a finger. Inotropes stop working, bronchospams on ET tubes etc, rendering them difficult to ventilate, premature self extubation! The pace is different but shares similar traits too, for instance in ED (I work in London) the pace was about recognising relevent specialism, beginning treatment plans and then transfer to assessment beds or critical care beds. But ICU shares that constant work, like constant moving around, always doing something for your patient, and juggling loads of different ideas and prioritising care. Tbh in the U.K. the two main difference between ICU and ED is Acuity - for example you could be minors and majors and not see critically ill trauma which may come into resus all the time, unlike what icu nurses see a lot of the time, almost every shift. More patient flow in ED - which inherently may appear to increase pace but I would honestly say hand on my heart I feel like the icu pace and ED pace are similar, just that they’re applied in different ways. If that response looks bias out of the two my favourite is ED, but the skills icu have taught me are invaluable.

I plan on doing the accelerated program this fall and I'm so excited. Right now I work a psych hospital which is fast and unpredictable environment and the way my personality is set up, I think I belong in the ER. These videos are really really helpful. It helped me to make a decision on what I want to do. Thanks so much. Have a good day everyone!

I was offered an ER new grad nurse job position and one for MICU. It was a very tough decision. This video was really helpful. Will be picking ER though! I have more of an ER personality. I love the chaos, stress, humor and want to see something new all the time. Respectfully, I don't like dealing with families too much like you have to in ICU.

I’ve just done both in my clinical experience in back to back weeks. ER is VERY fast paced everything happens at once high adrenaline environment. ICU was all tubes lines and meds titrating and watching monitors

I’ve been a med surg nurse for 4.5 years but I was actually hired on as an ER nurse right from school in to a program. But it was just too much as a new grad for me..but now!!! It’s very different t lol. Med surg is great but I’m ready for something different and I’m not sure if it’s icu. Simply because the nurse has to know every single detail and inch of that pt /two patients... and I just don’t think I’m down for that. I have great energy at work and love the hustle of the hospital. I loved my time in the ER, I just couldn’t swing it as a newb. There’s an opportunity now for a residency I could apply. I know EPIC emr very well, I know how to be an actual nurse, I’m not afraid to talk to docs like I need to, so all of this would play in to doing ER now I believe. And yeah like you said, ICU is sooooo structured and policy policy policiessssss. And a lot of SKIN and POOP😂 thanks for this man, I’m going to apply to this residency now ✌🏼🤙🏼
