At the beginning of nursing school I made a list of specialities I thought I would like and crossed off the ones I lost interest in. Watching this, I was like wow yes I am definitely an introverted nurturer so I prefer NICU, L &D, PICU, pedes, geriatrics. These are the only ones left on my wall! Thank you sir for making me self reflect

By nature I'm an introvert, perfectionist, but I have learned to rock it in terms of banter with patients and coworkers and all the while have learned to let things go as there is just one of me. I am constantly working on a triage mentality and prioritization is key. I have done med surg, I am currently working a step-down unit and if you don't let stuff go and keep moving you will die on shift in terms of drowning in your assignment. Is it crazy? Yep. Is it stressful? Yep. Meanwhile, I don't mind the busy. Im currently looking at going to cardiac ICU as I find open hearts intriguing plus I want to up the anty on my skill set as I want to keep learning. I have found for me being an introvert doing what I do that downtime after shift is important as I have to recharge my batteries a bit. I don't typically get drained if I get my downtime regularly. I also try and take a vacation every 6 months which typically consists of us going somewhere for one and it being a staycation for the second. I have found this helps me stave off caretaker burnout

I'm a moderate introvert who is highly organized. I did medsurge at an LTACH for a couple of years and absolutely hated it. I then did outpatient psych and loved it, however felt that there was no where for me to grow in that field. I've been a stay at home mom for a little over a year as my husband is an extremely disorganized extroverted orthopaedic surgery resident. I graduate with my MSN in administration in 2 weeks and looking to head back to work. I actually want to go into the ICU with future goals of CRNA school. I like the idea of high acuity and lower patient load (high patient load in medsurge drove me nuts).

Also for ICU- I didn’t realize how much the big personalities thing is there. Letting things roll off you is huge in any specialty! For my experience in ICU, family is a huge part of their care and attending to family’s needs as well which was different than my ER experience! Big adjustment haha

With such a variety of choices and with each day bringing completely new patients with individual situations, why WOULDN’T you choose nursing? You can be in case management, in home, in office, in clinic, in education, in cardiac, pediatrics, ER, ICU, Med Surg, OB/GYN, L&D, on and on.

ER first for the experiences, (unorganized & nurturing extrovert, ADD who always strives to be more organized and nursing school demands it) then later in life, a specialty more nurturing, but highly doubt it will be L&D. I love taking care of older adult/senior patients.❤

Or should I go into ICU for a couple of years and use it as a great learning experience so I'm not boxing myself into such a niche setting? PLEASE HELP!!!!
@CrosbyTheNomadNurse
@CrosbyTheNomadNurse 6 жыл бұрын
Hmmmmm So you're trying to decide between L&D and ICU? That's tough because both are very good specialties. I know that Traveling L&D specialties make awesome money, like 2200 a week take home, vs ICU or ER when we take home around 1500 a week. So if you wanna travel there is a good reason to do L&D. With ICU you have to opportunity to go deeper into disease processes , working with more complex equipment ventilators, balloon pumps, etc. So yeah i mean it's kind of tough but you really can't go wrong with either.
@BlackLittleBoots
@BlackLittleBoots 6 жыл бұрын
@@CrosbyTheNomadNurse Thanks for responding! It's such a tough choice because they're both great!!! Which would you say is better to go into FIRST though as a new nurse? Something I know I enjoy or something that I would learn a ton from? (Money is not something I think about because I'm in Canada and wages are standardised for nurses) Thanks again!!!
@CrosbyTheNomadNurse
@CrosbyTheNomadNurse 6 жыл бұрын
In that case, I would probably go towards ICU because of the overall experience you would get and you would learn so much in ICU, even though L&D is good it's just limited to the overall experience you get exposed to.

I did not see that coming regarding dialysis. I’ve been a dialysis tech for 14 years and I’m about to start nursing school. I think it depends a lot on the demographics of your patient population. I’ve had good experiences with suburb or rural clinics. Inner city clinics are rough and you do get treated like garbage. I like that it’s a routine and you take care of the same patients all the time, but there’s a decent amount of turnover through transplant, death, and patients transferring to other clinics.

You've found a difference in the demographics?? I just started as a new grad nurse in dialysis and am working in an inner city clinic. I'm super introverted and spend zero time in the city so this population is pretty brutal and exhausting in my opinion. I'd love to transfer to a more rural clinic and keep gaining experience but worried that this won't help my situation haha.

That's a good question 1. No I didn't, but I have heard the same thing. 2. I believe the problem for most nurses with a Masters is that they get out of their patient care specialty and go into either FNP, Teaching, and Admin. When you travel nurse you need to be ready to go and have all your certifications up to date, and you need to be treating patients so you don't lose your skills.
